All the roles are juggling acts, really. I’m always grateful when they remove skills with each expansion because I constantly feel like I’m at my limit for plate-spinning

I can see that coming. I did my first dungeon today as a Conjurer which I really enjoyed but I was just zoned in on the party bar for most of it and a bit unaware of what was going on around me. Which was good as there was only really one time when some mobs aggroed me and I had to think a little.

I'm currently running through La Noscea just doing the side-quests. Not really necessary but I'm not minding the run around, see the lay of the land and so on. Opportunity to fill my Gathering Log too.

It's a shame it's been implemented the way it has, especially for people in your situation, but it's clearly targeted at totally new players rather than lapsed ones.

Gotten back on this again this week. Currently a lvl 27 conjurer. I'm usually wary of instanced dungeons and the the like in MMOs, but the fact the main story forces you into them means I've had to try them, and being a healer actually feels pretty chill, so I'm enjoying it for now.

It doesn't stay chill. I get stressed out doing them as they start getting harder. More AOE attacks, more status effects, more attacks that can wipe out players if they are in the wrong place. It's a constant juggling act, making sure your healing the right people while making sure you don't get wiped.

Yeah, it's fun but it's not easy.

Still love being a white mage though. Never kept waiting to get in a dungeon at least.

Thought I'd log in to do a few quick quests before finishing my shift and ending up sitting in Gridania listening to a group of bards doing covers. This is fantastic.

Eurogamer report on the recent surge in popularity.

I recall MS announcing that the game was coming to Xbox but that feels like ages ago now. Just searched and it seems that it could still be on the way:

Naoki Yoshida wrote:...There are no obstacles for developing the Xbox version. We were able to undertake development and provide our service thanks to the immense efforts that Phil has invested. For that we are truly grateful!

The sole factors are the workload and the order of steps. Now when it comes to the Xbox version, there’s unfortunately not much I can say presently but just that we cannot work on all the steps simultaneously and need to follow the order for proceeding with these things. Since we’re currently involved in the development of Endwalker and preparing the PS5 version to follow on from the title’s service on PS4, it’d be appreciated if we can return to touch upon the Xbox version once things have settled!

I have switched from black mage to white mage. I love healing in this game. I get frustrated with the targeting system for range DPS, it just doesn't feel good.

Thought I'd go and do the white mage quest since I reached level 30. What I didn't realise was that I had to have reached a certain point in the MSQ to access it. :x

At least I've now looked at the list of quests. Goes on a bit doesn't it? :dread:

I can't remember who it was (I think Jesse Cox) who said that while FFXIV and WoW are both MMORPGs, WoW is an MMO first, RPG second, and XIV is the reverse.

So yeah, big story go. Each base expansion is a full length JRPG, then you get the patch content between each expansion, which gives you 5 more chunks of story. So in theory each expansion ends up being 1.5 to 2 full length FF games.

It suffered from it a bit in ARR when they didn't know what they were doing, but it pretty quickly fell into its groove towards the end of the patches, and has since trimmed the really obnoxious parts of ARR.

And I'm not even exaggerating when I say this winds up being the best FF story, at least this side of the millennium.

I don't want to imagine what it was like before it was trimmed down. I still get the feeling there's a fair amount of stuff that could be cut.

On the other hand, a fantastic source of experience. Nearly level 40 now and thinking of taking on another class just to make use of some of the MSQ experience. It'll also be good to see how the other classes work. I did a dungeon last night and the ranged DPS and I were constantly taking aggro from 2-3 mobs at the start of the fight. Made it a bit more interesting than I was expecting. Was it because the tank was being a bit naff? I like the idea of some mobs ignoring aggro, you know, keep things a little manic, but for a level 20 place? I've also realised that being really far away from everyone is not necessarily a good thing. Not sure the class quest helped there.

My thought process right now about returning to FFXIV:

I dunno. Will need to think about it.

Pretty much. They probably forgot to turn on their tank stance, which gives them a huge aggro boost. They might also be using an outdated guide where tanks were told to use single target attacks.

Occasionally you'll still rip aggro at level 80, but it shouldn't happen more than like 5 seconds into a settled pull. White Mage and Dancer have massive and instant AoE nukes so they sometimes eat a few hits until the tank catches up, but generally speaking tanks just inherently generate way more.

Do your role quests. They teach you what your specific class should be doing during dungeons and team fights.
EDIT - There should be someone outside each dungeon (At least early in the game) that will let you take on these quests.

Read up on each dungeon or boss fight before hand so you know what to expect, and what to focus on.
EDIT: https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki ... rio_Quests
That's a list of all the main quests, through the main game, into the expansions and up to the current patches. When you reach a boss or dungeon you can get more details on them from there.

Ignore any chat from other players.

Instanced combat is pretty unavoidable by the looks of it, a lot of story beats for your main quest sit behind dungeon content. That being said, I've not come across anyone giving any others a hard time in any of the dungeons I've run up to lvl 31 so far.

I'm usually wary about this kind of dungeon running with PUGs, largely because I've had bad experiences in other games, running with people who are trying to rush content for farming, and they've not been interested in dealing with newer players, but FFXIV seems pretty accommodating, and I've had groups where people are perfectly happy to wait for those doing a dungeon the first time to sit and watch cutscenes before they charge ahead. I also used to hate that I might start an instanced event with a fixed group, only to have to step away from the game for whatever reason, and end up abandoning others and spoiling their time with the game, but again, what I've encountered so far has generally been of a pretty brief length. I always favoured Guild Wars 2 its non-instanced world, where events were open to all on a map because of my reservations, but I've really enjoyed my time in dungeons here so far.

Yeah I would agree with this.

I'm not a fan of playing with others, but FFXIV is really friendly in that regard. Not had any grief from anyone about screwing up and even if I did, ah well, I just jump in another game and never need to see them again.

I would add that I did find dungeons a bit odd at first, because people will just run ahead and expect you to keep up. But they also wait for cutscenes if your watching. I think it also tells you if there is a first timer when you do a dungeon, which is nice.

Hey, guys, I really appreciate the tips - thanks! I will read over those points and look up the role types and quests.

I think I just need to be a bit more chill about it. I recall during my previous play that most folk were very friendly; it was only a few that were annoying.

My free trial has run out so I'll have to pay to play now. I *think* I will; try it for a few months and see how things go. I can move along at my own pace for now so that's cool :-).

I spent the past few days slowly levelling all the crafting jobs to level 20 but I'm going to put them to one side for now as a lot of things now require items I can't simply buy from the guild shop. It was good to craft a full set of gear for my gladiator role though. Compared to my white mage I actually look fairly smart.

I can see the difficulties now of learning how to tank decently. It's completely different set of things to watch, and I found some of the mobs in the first MSQ dungeon needed a bit more persuasion to attack me. It seems pretty easy to let the odd mob run by if you aren't paying attention or using your skills effectively. For my first run I wanted to take it at a relatively slow pace but for some reason the Conjurer, a returning player with a load of levels in a variety of classes, wanted to run ahead and pull the next few groups. At least they weren't as bad as the tank who didn't stop running and killed us all, but christ, can we chill? The rest of us were new and here we have an impatient prat running ahead and leaving me to pop potions to heal. I get that you can run ahead to speed up the dungeon, but let me find the limit myself.

So what server is everyone on these days? I’m part of a large, super welcoming, casual-friendly FC on Cerberus if anyone’s looking for somewhere to join.

I'm on the Omega server. Still on the free trial, so I think that prevents me from joining a free company anyway.

+1 for Omega.

Nearing the end of ARR but not been on in a week or so.
