Not sure about this direction, to be honest. Probably a good time for me to call it a day when my sub runs out.

Not that much to go on gameplay or story-wise, but holy hell those graphics updates and QoL things they showed off are fantastic. Really glad I updated to a ps5 this week, now.

Do you mean the raid tool? Or were there other important changes I missed?

Yeah, the raid tool primarily for the QoL stuff. Depending on how it plays out it'll be way nicer than using the waymarks, or just jumping up and down and hoping things can get across. But also smaller things like the multiple dye channels on gear.

Haven't watched the new expansion trailer, I still have all of Stormblood, Shadowbringers, and Endwalker to play through, but the graphical updates look lovely and are very welcome.

Don't know why I resubbed for over the summer when I'm going to be away from my computer on holiday and unable to play. Idiot. :fp:

Moonfire Faire is back from the 10th, and this year comes with a Phoenix Riser outfit, so your WOL can look like a Power Ranger

I really wanted to get into this. Downloaded it, faffed around resetting my password.

Then when I finally get ibyo the game after creating my character:

"hi! Sit there for 20 minutes while we throw text boxes at you" uninstalled it.

Doesn’t sound like you wanted to get into it that much, tbh.

And all I hear about is how much ARR has been streamlined compared to the original experience.

Should really get back into it. Think I got put off by feeling under pressure to be good at tanking.

DPS and nobody gives a strawberry float about you. But also, nobody will give a strawberry float about you. You’re just a backup dancer to the healers and tanks.

And if you're that worried about not being up to snuff as a tank, almost all the story dungeons are available to run with a team of NPC allies.

I did actually give DRG a go and it was refreshing to only have to mindlessly spam a few simple combos in the early levels. :datass:

Going point! I'll look into that when I pick up the game again ta!

I mean, I think I put a pretty reasonable amount of effort in.

If the game doesn't want to show me how it actually plays, and thinks I need to learn how to open and close windows or set quest markers before I even know how to control my character, I don't think that's my fault for not wanting to carry on.

The thing that invests people in these games is ownership and identity surrounding their character.

I'm not sure why that wouldn't be the first thing you show someone "hey, I know you just spent 15 minutes creating your perfect character, so let me show you how cool they are and what they can do!"

I played Tera a few years ago and I was fighting gooseberry fool within like 10 minutes.

I can see your point, Fade. I've tried playing FF XIV several times now - totaling around 200 hours - and, although I really enjoy it, I feel like such a dumbass whenever I play. The controls are pretty complicated and trying to work out what to do is a bit confusing; I wish there was an "easier" introductory path. You do get guidance but it's still a lot to take in!

The environments, characters and exploration are fantastic, though, so I am thinking about giving it *another* go :-).

I mean that the game is notoriously a slow burn, and you didn’t even give it the length of a Simpsons episode before uninstalling it? It even sounds like you’d hate it, to be honest. What little fighting you do in the first bunch of hours is done with only one or two attacks. The fact that you can choose any class and switch classes at will, coupled with the juggling of mechanics at the higher levels, means it can’t ever really say to you “this is what your character can do”. Instead, you character can do basically nothing to start and you slowly earn more and more abilities through the course of the 500 hour campaign. You basically know every skill inside out by the time you get the next one, because you’ll have been using it for ages.

The game starts with extremely small stakes that escalate over the course of 5 campaigns. Hell, the first time they even try to make your character seem *cool* is in the third expansion. It’s just funny to hear “I really, really wanted to get into it” followed by “20 mins of text? Bye bye”. Your expectations look to be so far off of what the game is that it’s hard to know what it is about the game that you were trying to get into.

I've played MMORPGs before and none of them have had such an incredibly slow burn at the start, or had such poor introduction mechanics.

Maybe it's normal for this game, but it's certainly not an industry standard.

I'm not going to take a risk on a game that might eat up hundreds of hours of my time if it can't demonstrate to me how it will be fun.

I'll just play something that will.

Not being industry standard is a large part of FFXIV's appeal though. If you want industry standard, Warcraft is right there. Unlike Wow, where the focus seems to be on racing to end game and then hopping on the raid and gear treadmill, this has a massive focus on the story that makes up the leveling journey. Even once you reach max level, or if you use a boost to skip past previous expansions story missions, you'll still need to do story quests to unlock most of the raids and dungeons. And because your character can be so flexible, go and do literally everything in the game, the focus of what the game introduces you to is the world around you and the characters in it.

A lot of the opening content is showing it's age, admittedly, and the references to the calamity don't carry the same weight now as they would have back when Realm Reborn was new, and the memories of the disastrous 1.0 version, and it's eventual cataclysmic end of it were still fresh and front of mind for players. However, if you're interested in getting into the world of XIV, it does do a good job of that. If you're not a fan of how the game operates, maybe it's just not for you.

Patch 6.5 is out... and one of the features is that the entire game can now be played as a single player if so desired. NPCs will take the place of other players in dungeon battles.

This is fantastic news! I stopped playing because I was so bad at the game and I grew tired of letting down other players. Now I would be able to play without that stress and worry... I think that I might now give it another go :toot: .

Final Fantasy Fan Fest London news

New job - "Viper"

Eurogamer wrote:Revealed at the Final Fantasy Fan Fest in London, the Viper is the first of two Jobs coming in the next expansion, Dawntrail.

The Viper is a Final Fantasy 14 original Job, a dual-wielding melee DPS with two swords that combine into one.

The Job was designed to cater to players wanting a new dual-wielding Job that's different to the existing Ninja, and is a similar dexterity melee fighter.

The Viper fights with swift slashes to pressure enemies, before unleashing might blows with the joined weapon. Additionally, the Viper can imbue their body with additional power for temporary abilities, calling on the memories of ancient hunters.

The second new job is on the way!

Eurogamer wrote:...a second Job is on the way - a ranged magic DPS Job - but this will be revealed at the Tokyo Fan Fest next year, set for 7th January.

Crossovers with Fnal Fantasy XVI and... Fall Guys?!?

Fall Guys fans will be pleased to know the Gold Saucer crossover will launch next week on 31st October. Rounds based on the popular party game will be available periodically for groups of 24 (with random matchmaking), and unique prizes can be won.

A crossover with Final Fantasy 16 is also on the way, complete with Torgal mount.

Dawntrail expansion (Summer 2024) update

Eurogamer wrote:As revealed in Las Vegas, Dawntrail will take players to the far western land of Tural. It's a land of South American-inspired temples and lush jungles aimed at showing off the expansion's graphical update.

Yoshida showed off some in-game footage of the previously revealed city Tuliyollal as well as two new areas. The first is Kozama'uka, a tropical region of breathtaking waterfalls and vivid coloured trees. Here players will meet the Moblins, creatures similar to goblins but experts in gathering crafting materials.

The second area is Shaaloani, a Wild West-like desert area with a railroad and Ceruleum deposits. Artwork for this area had a big secret blanked out - what could be hidden in the distance?

Eurogamer wrote:Dawntrail will feature as many dungeons as previous expansions, here including underground temples, sunlit groves, snowy mountainous areas with strange blue and violet crystal growths, and even a river cruise.

Coming to Xbox Series!

Eurogamer wrote:An open beta test for Xbox players will take place mid January to February.
