Just picked up a second job as a Botanist now which I can level alongside Conjurer when I feel like it. Really enjoying the job system.

I'm seeing a lot of people running around with exp boosts, beyond what you can get from eating. Are they from purchasing the game or pre-ordering? The downside with buying the game appears to be having to pay a monthly subscription as well. Might hold off until I've done most of the first story?

There are some items you can get that boost experience gain. Preordering gives you an earring that gives you 30% more up to level 80. They've given these out since Stormblood to help catch people up.

Beyond that you'll eventually be directed to a place called the Hall of the Novice that will go over basics of your job in a sort of combat setting. If you make it all the way through you'll get the Brand New Ring which gives +30% up to level 30. You also get some really solid low level armour to carry you through the first few dungeons in regards to gearing.

The Friendship Circlet is +20% up to level 25 if you use the Refer A Friend system before buying your sub.

Also, there's a thing called the Armoury Bonus. This is basically if you have another job at a higher level then anything you level up to that job will gain more experience. Been a while since I looked into it, but I THINK it's +100% if they're less than 10 levels lower, then +50% if they're between 1 and 10 levels lower. For example if you have a level 80 White Mage and unlock Dark knight at 30, the Dark Knight gets double experience.

There are also an item called Squadron Battle Manuals which boost exp gain by 15% for 2 hours that you get from some side content, but I think this applies to fewer things than the others, haven't looked into them too much.

Finally, off the top of my head, if you join a Free Company (player guild) then they can apply an exp buff on their members.

Also these all stack.

You can level so quickly if you prep things.

Like I said earlier, though: the MSQ gives you experience crazy fast nowadays. Even with just the ring you'll probably always be ahead, especially when you start getting dungeons and running the daily levelling roulette for the experience bonuses. There gets a bit between the end of the base game at 50, and the start of Heavensward where you get a run of level 50 quests in the patch content. But you keep levelling. Once you hit 50 you'll get such a headstart you might worry you'll hit cap way too soon.

I'd suggest holding off on the sub for a while unless you start wanting to play with other people in a FC or really want the market board, etc

That said, free players are currently back of the line on queue timers, but that's just a hiccup of the times and doesn't usually matter too much. No idea how long it will last, but just remember that if there's a queue, a paying customer will take your spot.

That's great, thanks for writing all that out! I did the Hall of the Novice (great music) yesterday so I now have a nice little boost to my exp. I'm actually accumulating exp fairly quickly, as you suggested. I'm not even focussing on the MSQ, so much so that I think I've been over levelled for the past few I've done.

There is a sale on at the moment, 60% off the complete editions, so I picked it up. I'm going to hold off on activating the code though just to make sure I'm really enjoying the game.

Another letter from Yoshi.

Tl;dr is they did wizardry with the EU servers to boost the login caps a bit, also "thanks for not dancing in Limsa while eating, but don't feel you need to log out ASAP. The auto logout should be enough."

Jumping back on console, a new console, without saved setting, on control after leaving in 5.0 makes this all very confusing.

I can't even queue for random dungons now my gear isnt high enough (have they made they harder? I did the first 4 Edens),

MSQ it is and hope other raids open up then I guess :D

They did add gear gates to the levelling dungeons because people were going in WAY undergeared, but as long as you're using the poetic gear from the previous expansion, you should be geared enough to get into those. Otherwise for endgame gearing:

Each dungeon at cap has a gear gate, starting at 410 for the early dungeons (which you should be able to get into with the job gear at 430 which you get in The Tempest just south of The Ondo Cups) up to 490 for the latest patch duneon.

Current uncapped tometones of Allegory can get you 490 gear if you want to farm a few pieces from there. Or you can do the last floors of Eden at 485 to grab items to trade in for 510 gear. Dungeons also drop gear a little above their level, so a couple pieces might help you reach the next one.

For a quick boost I'd make sure you're equipped with your job artifact gear, then run some roulettes and dungeons (these should get you into at least the first 4 Shadowbringers ones) that give Tomestones of Allegory to get those 490 pieces. You should also pick up some weekly capped tomestones of Revelation to buy some 520 pieces to pad your number even further at the same time, but you can only get 900 of these a week. You trade these tomes in at Eulmore, in case you forgot, at the big line of counters off the aetheryte plaza. Alternatively, you could see if there are any cheap Exarchic items on the market at 510.

I'm a mix of 450/460 from first 4 Eden (Gate?). Was just surprised to see I couldn't even get into the dunegon daily now

Does the Southern Front get better?

Feels like running from skirmish to skirmish for VERY slow incremental progress...admittedly to a chuffin amazing weapon

Eventually you can start getting a little faster on mettle, and you can get some pretty fun lost actions (like a tank one that reduces all cooldowns by 75%, buffs damage by 60%, and restores HP and MP while active) but overall that's about what you're looking at. The problem is that the Bozja part of it doesn't really give that much mettle compared to the second zone (for some reason) so people are really just there to afk in case Castrum pops.

The big raids that you get at the end of both zones, as well as one interim one, are pretty fun though.

It's also really weird how they balanced the relic weapon progression this time. In Stormblood they had a zone similar to this called Eureka, and you had to do EVERYTHING inside it to advance your relic. Some people absolutely hated that and wanted them to go back to how it was in ARR and HW where you were encouraged to do old content. So they gave us the choice this time. But for something like the first half of the steps, it's just flat out more efficient to do them outside of Bozja.

At rank 10 you get access to a Critical Engagement called "The Battle of Castrum Lacus Litore" which is basically a fullscale 48 man raid. And it drops a *lot* of relic upgrade materials. To the point your choices are run 3 CLLs for that step or 15 Crystal tower raids.

I've just signed up at the Thaumaturge guild :toot: .

One thing I've noticed is that the current members are all - like me! - Lalafell. Is this just a coincidence, or does the game change some NPCs according to what type of being you may be?

I've just realised that the free trial "up to level 60" is time-driven rather than level-driven. My free trial was for 14 days and I'll need to pay a sub at the end of that if I want to continue playing. The free trial last until level 60 or the end of the 14 days; whichever is earlier. For a player like me, who progresses at a glacial pace, it'll most certainly be 14 days. I was wondering why I'd had to pay the sub when I played a few years ago as I wasn't anywhere near 60... and now I know why  .

Feels great to be back playing this again, though :toot: .

The latest changes to the free trial, up to lvl 60, only apply to new accounts, so if you had a paid sub previously, you're not eligible for the new free trial set up.

Oh, right - ta, Knoyleo. The cool thing is that I have been able to use the free 14-day trial on my PS4, though. Six days to go! :-) .

If you're starting again, is it worth you just starting a new account? The new free trial set up lets you play all the way through to the end of Heavensward and lvl 60, and if you are playing at a slow pace, that could be a big saving.

That's a good idea although I'm not sure if I could on the PS format? A good thing about using my existing logon is that all the collectors edition gear and subscription items that I gained on my previous character were issued to my new char. Thanks for the heads-up, though, dude.

Ah, no, probably not.

It's a shame it's been implemented the way it has, especially for people in your situation, but it's clearly targeted at totally new players rather than lapsed ones.

Gotten back on this again this week. Currently a lvl 27 conjurer. I'm usually wary of instanced dungeons and the the like in MMOs, but the fact the main story forces you into them means I've had to try them, and being a healer actually feels pretty chill, so I'm enjoying it for now.

So many folk playing this now!

Cool to hear that you're trying the conjurer job - healing sounds neat. Yeah, I like taking my time in the game and so the heat of a multiplayer battle can be a bit intense. Hopefully I'll get my head around the Thaumaturge attack cycle again and, later, I'll feel able to join a battle.

It doesn't stay chill. I get stressed out doing them as they start getting harder. More AOE attacks, more status effects, more attacks that can wipe out players if they are in the wrong place. It's a constant juggling act, making sure your healing the right people while making sure you don't get wiped.

Yeah, it's fun but it's not easy.

Still love being a white mage though. Never kept waiting to get in a dungeon at least.
