It's not FF because it has long cutscenes? FFX has 10 hours. XIII-3 has 9. I won't count XIV in totality but Shadowbringers alone is 9 and a half.

That's pretty standard.

The evolution of ATB to full real time is fair, but FF has always been story and cutscene heavy when the hardware allows it.

It’s an action game now, I hated FF15’s combat also, I enjoy turn based combat in FF. I’m not talking about the bombast and gorgeous visuals, that’s all fine, the 11 hours of cut scenes sounds a bit much to me, maybe it won't be.

I'm not alone in being against this statement.

Well, I guess it's a good thing that the Bravely Default series is just FFV-2 through 4.

Like I said, your opinions on it are entirely fair, but it's been progressively going this route since ATB was introduced in FFV. Sakaguchi has gone on record saying this is what he had in mind back when he introduced it but the SNES had limitations.

This is as FF as any other.

Battles were Turn based more or less all the way up to FF15, he could have changed it well before... not entirely sure that argument holds water...

It was introduced in 4, they just didn’t have the bar

He also wasn't the director on anything past V, so it wouldn't have been his call to make on the likes of IX for example. That would have been down to the individual to determine the changes to make. CBU3 make GCD combat tab target MMOs, a natural evolution of the ATB system, and this is again a natural evolution of that towards a single player game experience.

You can dislike the direction, but it didn't come out of nowhere.

I don't see an action game being the natural evolution of a turn based one but ok.

Outside of the VII Remake(s) Final Fantasy has failed to interest or excite me for a long time now, this appearing to just be another third person action game has done little to re-ignite my love for the series.

Maybe it's going to be great, I don't know, but with so many other games already filling that space in the modern gaming landscape it feels a shame to just turn this series into another example

I've been looking forward to this since they first showed it off and I still am.

I am a bit annoyed that it's seemingly gone full-action as I've always been a bigger fan of the turn-based stuff.
The DMC designer being involved in the combat does nothing for me as while I enjoy those kind of action games, it's not really what I want for a mainline Final Fantasy.

FFVII Remake nailed the mix of real-time and ATB and I really hoped we'd see more of that, but I guess they're saving that for those games.

So a little bit of a disappointment, but I'm still there day one.

In the last 20 years of the series’ 35 year history, there have been 3 numbered Final Fantasy games that had turn based combat, and two of those were direct sequels:

Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII-2

I mean, you just have to look at the battle systems of Lightning Returns, FFXV or the Kingdom Hearts series to see the “missing link” that bridges turn based or ATB menu combat to direct control action.

In the series 35 year history there have been no numbered Final Fantasy games that are generic third person action slasher games.

I mean yes, there is definitely connecting tissue in the more recent entries, but every step in this direction has coincided with me becoming less interested in the series!

Can you provide any examples of “third person action slasher games” that you don’t think are generic? I don’t think this looks generic at all!

Yeah, this did the rounds about 6 months ago iirc. Unfortunately it's a gap in research for someone wanting to adhere to an authentic feeling of medieval Europe, but an understandable one, especially considering he's from the other side of the world.
