PostFire Emblem GBA help

I'm currently playing through Fire Emblem on GBA (just finished the pirate ship chapter) and being unfamiliar with the series in general I have a question, is it best to pick a party of your favourite characters and stick with them or to try and level everybody up evenly? I ask this as I have a bunch of characters now and some rarely if ever get used for example the healer on horseback has all but replaced my first healer as she can cover so much more of the field, same goes for Sain and Kent who have largely been replaced by Marcus and Lowen.

I try to level everyone up evenly but I might have replaced the on foot healer with the one on horseback for the reason that you mentioned. I know that I have used Kent and Sain instead of Marcus and Lowen so that they all get to the same level.

If the GBA game is anything like the 3DS one, at some point you'll have a character or two that can beat everyone by themselves.

One of my characters is getting that way now as I use him to defend my merchant's tent so he gets attacked by enemy reinforcements a lot.

It's not as bad as in Jeanne D'arc mind you where the Godspeed ability meant one character could often wipe out most of the opposition in one turn.

It was hilarious doing that with the frog.

I've only played the DS FE game but found it better to stick with one main group of characters to level up, you just have to be extra careful not to get them killed.
