I finished the Black Eagles route.

A few gripes, but overall, I grew to love this game after a somewhat rocky beginning with it.

I've been playing and enjoying this for a week or so, it's my first Fire Emblem game but I decided on Hard/Classic mode as I heard it wasn't too difficult and that was the best way to play.

I'm still fairly early on in the game, currently at Chapter 6 where Flayn goes missing and it feels like things are about to start ramping up in terms of difficulty.

Has anyone got any general tips for the game in terms of how to manage my units etc.? At the moment I've been spending most of my free time exploring the monastery trying to level up my professor rank and keeping my students motivated for Monday lectures. I've tried to keep on top of auxillary battles as well and currently everyone is around levels 10-15.

I haven't really been paying any attention to stats and have just been levelling up what look to be the characters base skills. I've generally adjusted goals in line with what the students have been telling me. Will I run into trouble later on doing this if I'm not min-maxing stats etc.?

My main criticism of the game so far is the silent protagonist. I don't understand why Byleth doesn't speak when it's not like you have much choice in terms of character creation, and it just seems odd how all the students seem to love you yet you barely say a word to any of them.

Ideally you want characters to specialise in specific skills. You'll want your magic users to go all in on mastering Reasoning and Faith. All the master classes in the game require mastery of several skills but they aren't always necessary. Ideally you'll want all your units to reach an advanced class. Look at the classes when you can and think about what you want your units to specialise in by the end of the game.
Units strong class subjects and stats can be big indicators for what you'll want them to learn. No point classing a unit as a sword master if they have low speed.

Also think about how you want to play, if you like advancing and clearing maps quickly then you need high movement units like cavaliers and pegasus knights. Some units are best trained to ride mounts, archers are always good to give mounts to as they can move in, attack and then move away using the canto skill. If you like the enemy to come to you then think about what units could be made to be good for pulling, high defence and resistance are good for that.

That sounds kind of like what I've been doing. I'm playing as Blue Lions and so Mercedes and Annette have been almost exclusively focusing on Faith and Reasoning respectively. Currently I've made Dedue a heavy armoured class (can't remember the name of it) and Dimitri a cavalry class. Sounds like I need to take a look at the later classes to see what stats I need to focus on in preparation.

Enjoying this but still don't really get the monastery bits, which is a shame because I spend most of my bloody time there.

Did anyone else know that Dedue is from Duscur? I swear every single one of his support cutscenes are about
how everyone hates Duscur

This is the one thing I was not overly sold on, but I grew to not really mind it. It's basically about building up motivation levels so you can instruct your students and improve them, also about poaching students from other classes. Take them for meals and gooseberry fool.

I completed the Battle of the Eagle and Lion last night, that was probably the most fun mission so far with all 3 teams attacking each other.

I've managed to make a bit of progress with recruitment and have recruited Flayn, Cyril, Dorothea, Ignatz, Catherine, Hanneman, Manuela and Shamir. Although for the most part I think I'm going to stick with the original Blue Lions line-up.

Could anyone give me an estimate of how far away I am from Part 2? I've already put over 20 hours into this!

Your miles away, and your progress is glacially slow like mine is / was. Most people seemed to be reaching the points i had in half the time. Im 50hrs in and still not up to Part 2. Have put it down for now, but will probably pick it up again after Astral Chain.

Whaaaa... I've been really taking my time with everything, just got 45 hours in and I'm a fair way into Part 2. What have you been doing for 50 hours (I mean that as a question not an sarccy comment)? I've fought every paralogue, spent time in the monastery at least once every month, listened to every support conversation... I'm not sure how I could have spent any more time doing optional stuff!

I've no problem putting this as one of my favourite games in years. I knew the character stuff would work for me really well but I'm really enjoying the battles too.

These are the replys that concern me. I'm just playing at a pace that seems reasonable. I typically explore 1 week, do battles 2 weeks (so thats 4 battles typically), and then the end of chapter ruck.

Exploring the monastry usually takes a good hour or so, and then there is probably a good hour of micromanaging the teaching, forging weapons, swapping abilities in and out etc.

Usually my play times for games are very close to (or less than) those quoted on HLTB. This is the first time where i fell like i am "that guy" who is seemingly playing a completely different game to everyone else!

I'm playing on Hard / Classic, and it is my first ever FE game. I have not had to restart at all, but i would say the early battles have probably artificially skewed by game time (as i was cycling through numerous permutations of moves more often in the early stages).

Well I certainly wrap the monastery times up quicker than that, it usually takes about 15 minutes, up to 30 once I'm done repairing gooseberry fool and shuffling inventory items. I too am a series newcomer playing on Hard/Classic and I'm really trying not to rush as I'm enjoying myself so much!

Yikes, i guess im just wasting a huge amount of time somewhere. It of ten takes 30 minutes just catching up with all the support rank scenes that have happened. Talking to all the people in the monastry usually takes a good 45 minutes. I guess i could stop doing that, but often it adds flavour.

So for you lot who have completed a run on Hard: how the strawberry float did you do Fort Merceus?

The objective is to kill the Death Knight but as soon as I get close he runs away towards an exit he will reach in 3 turns. I can't kill him in one hit and his counter is a one hit kill so this means I'm guaranteed to lose at least one unit, permanently. I can't see a way to it without losing multiple units.

Turns out you don't have to kill him. In fact, I think it's impossible to kill him and not lose units on Hard.
