The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has new information on Hokuto ga Gotoku‘s “Pressure Point Action” system.
Get the tidbits below.
“Just Pressure Point” is a technique that takes advantage of pressure points to deal great damage by pressing the Circle button with good timing. The remarks uttered by dying enemies can be possessed as weapons or become items. “Abeshi Collection” is an element that lets you collect the remarks uttered by dying enemies. “Burst” is a technique that significantly strengthens Kenshiro and can be triggered by building up the gauge charged each time you defeat an enemy. “Destiny Gems” can be inserted into the status board to activate corresponding abilities. “Yadoyado Talismans” can be equipped to strengthen Kenshiro’s abilities and learn new techniques. When activated, cut-ins drawn by the illustrator of the manga will appear on the screen. By acquiring Raoh’s talisman, Kenshiro can use his “Tensho Honretsu” technique.
There are 2 modes: one is the combat tutorial and another has you roaming about the world, but with routes closed off (kind of like at the start of Yakuza games). My biggest worry about this was it'd feel too similar to Yakuza and while there are similarities (like with the inventory menu) the combat side felt different enough to get me excited. Will try the story/roam portion of demo later.
EDIT: What so you can leave it on your shelf, unplayed? PFFFFFFFFT!
I have no idea if the game is as deep as Yakuza, but I found the combat to at least have a different enough of a feel to it that it didn't feel like a Yakuza clone. But then the combat is only a part of what makes Yakuza so great. But I'll happily take more Yakuza *and* this. And there is another new Yakuza (other than Kiwami 2 and 6) due anyway: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=40862&p=4184552&hilit=yAKUZA+6#p4184552
Totally mad! I'm a little unsure about the violence, though; I've only seen a very small number of Fist of the North Star clips and I'd forgotten about just how violent it is!
It looks to be super-daft fun but I won't be jumping aboard at launch; I've got Yakuza 0 to tackle ahead of this.
The Manga movie and TV series was probably tied with Guyver as my all time favourite anime series as a youngster so it better be violent as strawberry float! Pretty sure I have a bunch of unopened Revoltech Hokuto No Ken figures hidden away in the loft which should include Kenshiro and Raoh among others.
Great news. I'm currently in Japan and seeing the game in stores, it has eye catching cover art.
After my disappointment with Yakuza 0 and general ambivalence towards Kiwami 2 (2 is the best in the series but MORE MAJIMA just screams that the studio is pushing in a direction I don't enjoy) this is my most anticipated title from the Yakuza team. Well, until they confirm that the next Yakuza is a complete restart with NO RETURNING CHARACTERS.
Definitely interested in this one. First Of The North Star is a franchise I have always admired from a distance, I was to poor to buy it when it released on VHS and too young to rent it I believe (it was an 18 right?)
