No details on who just yet, let the speculation begin.

He only got a yellow card?

Not prosecuted yet according to the story, still time for the post game FA review - where they'll acknowledge that they booked the wrong player in the first place

Did he know the girl was underage?

I imagine it'd be quite terrifying finding out that a one night stand could land you on the sex offenders register.

I find that such an innocent view of footballers it's almost laughable. I'd like to believe that, but it's unlikely with the LAD culture associated with the sport.

Even so, his name shouldn't be public unless he's actually been charged. Same old issue with these cases, doesn't seem to matter whether somebody's innocent or guilty; drag their name through the mud and then worry (or not as is usually the case) about the repercussions of that later.

The big question is, would someone convicted of statutory rape be ostracised in the same way Ched Evans was/is?

Speaking of Evans this is another ex Man City player getting accused of rape (albeit statutory) :dread:

As for the ostracisation it's a weird one to predict because in the eyes of some doing anything with someone legally classified as a child will be at least equally abhorrent, even if they were consenting to the act, which is what I'm assuming from "having sex with" (but not legally consenting obviously). However I'd suggest that the biggest issue with Evans was that he was an aggressive rapist who outright violated someone; Johnson being a technical rapist seems easier to forgive in comparison, especially if there's reasonable belief that he thought she was of age.

Still I suspect that it'll end his career, if nothing else because of the Evans rape still being fresh in the minds of fans, advertisers, the media and clubs

I would guess not, as long as he maintained that he didn't know. Sadly, it all depends on how good you are though, Adam Johnson would find a club reasonably easily I'd imagine.

Technically this case wouldn't be statutory rape.

Am I right that Sunderland have suspended him even though he hasn't actually been charged yet? Not very fair on him.

If my knowledge of old episodes of The Bill is correct the victim would need to be 12 or under I believe.

Can't remember if it changed or not but yeah I believe it was under 13.
