Overall, my reaction to the Forza Horizon 4 upgrade for Series consoles is mixed. This is still one of the best driving games ever made, it still looks gorgeous and the quality of life improvements delivered by the faster CPU and storage are much appreciated, while the advantages of 60 frames per second in this genre can't be understated. However, it can't be right that a next-gen upgrade should compromise on visual features when we know the hardware is capable of more. We did share our findings with Microsoft as soon we saw that something was amiss - and we're told that SSAO may well be back in the first title update. With a studio as talented as Panic Button on development duties, I remain hopeful that Series X and S will deliver the definitive Forza Horizon 4 console experience in the fullness of time - with no compromises.

And it'll be on Gamepass at launch right?

Really surprised by Forza 4. Would never have picked it up if not for Gamepass, as driving games are not my cup of tea and I can count on one hand the ones that I have stuck with (PGR 2/3, Driveclub and Burnout 3 are the ones that come to mind).

I always thought Forza was a po-faced, generic Gran Turismo wannabe, and they are the type of games I bounce off.

But Horizon is very much the heir to PGR and Driveclub. The festival tone is a little bit too much and they should tone it down, but it's just a lot of fun.

Didn't think an open world setting would be my thing too, as I never really clicked with Burnout Paradise (though I am going to retry that k. Gamepass later) but it makes it really easy to just pick up and buzz around, earning skill points and finding stuff as you go.

Horizon 5 next year... Well, they've obviously had to have been working on something, and I'm sure with Microsoft betting on Halo everything else was pushed to a '21 release at the earliest, so Playground would have been working to that schedule. We won't be finding out what those plans are until June, though. Curious about that location, though.

I thought if we got Motorsport next year and Horizon 5 in 2022, they'd each have had 4 years to work on each game and we'd see some amazing results... but if Horizon 5 comes first, it makes me think something has gone wrong.

I think Japan is the popular choice (ray-traced neon cities ), but maybe they'd not want to do such a highly anticipated location in their first game of the gen, especially if the next one will be in the 'old' engine and we have to wait for FH6 before getting the new Forza engine Turn10 are working on.

Since getting my Series X, I've played through FH2 and FH3 to the credits (although nowhere near fully done with either), plus gone back to the original Horizon to try and bump up my Forza Rewards tier. My original plan was to space FH2 to FH4 out, but I'm having more fun with them than any racing game I've played before and kind of want to jump straight into FH4 even though I know there's a risk of too much Forza and getting burned out.

I know FH2 and FH3 are delisted, but you can still get FH3 and all it's DLC on sites like CDkeys, and the older games are still worth playing. They're not like your typical racing game where the new ones make the old ones irrelevant. I think I've seen Parksey say he'd like to eventually upgrade his Series S to a Series X and at least the discs are easy to come by and cheap. FH2 did frustrate me a little though with just how many cars were DLC, and even if it was free DLC, it's now cut off. For FH3 I'd bought all the DLC when it went on sale before being delisted.

When I finally get my hands on a Series X, FH4 will be one of the first games I'll play. Really interested to see how it runs compared to my One X, currently I have to choose between 1440/60 or 4k/30 on it so will love to see 4k/60 on the SX!

I have to be honest though, I don't really see a big drop when I do play at 1440 compared to 4k, in fact it's barely noticeable to my eyes. Maybe it's because I'm focused on the smooth 60 fps driving experience but I'm not sure.

I couldn't see any difference between 1440/60 on my One X and 4K/60 on my Series X. The load times are a massive improvement though.

What size is your 4KTV because you can tell the difference easily?

Also the 60fps mode on One X is not 1440/60, it's 1080/60:

The more fascinating prospect is the new 60fps performance mode, only available on Xbox One X. The trade-off is a drop to 1920x1080 resolution, but you once again keep 4x MSAA to clear up the image.

Your right, it is 1080/60 :fp: .

My tv is 55" LG OLED (its a B8, not state of the art, but not "gooseberry fool"). i sit approx 6' away from the TV (much closer than when watching films etc) and i can provide my my optician prescription if required.

Using the in car view, whizzing about at 160mph i cant see any difference.

I don't play Horizon games in car because the offroad courses are too hard, I play exclusivley in car in the more serious main Forza games. So yeah maybe cockpit view isn't too different but outside the car, the resolution change is actually jarring...

Top Gear events now crash the game for me on Series X. After the intro the car glides to a halt and then you can't do anything except quit to the dashboard

I wish they'd get rid of the wheelspins and give each car/item of clothing a definitive unlock path.

It's been 2 years and I still don't have the items of clothing I want. Either let us buy them or unlock the whole lot from the start.

Playground did a great job with representation on the character front but it still beggars belief that hair options are set in stone. The 2 white guys both have blonde hair. What about those of us with dark or ginger locks? I know how that sounds out loud but it's annoying not to have a little more customisation options.
