PostFriend looking for a decent gaming PC - please help!

So a freiend at work wants to get a gaming PC for her son for his birthday. He wants it to play Fortnite (Obvs) but she wants somehing that could handle some bigger games as he gets older and wants to try different games.

Budget wise she has said £500 but wants one as cheap as possible. Something that could be upgraded over time is a plus.

I don't play on PC so have no knowledge on what the best options are, can anyone recommend a system? Something pre-built ideally as she would have no ideal how to build a custom system.

£500 pre-built? Don't bother.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I have suggested a console but i think he already owns an Xbox, because his friend has a souped up £1k gaming rig he wants a gaming PC as well.

What about selecting parts and getting a system built already? With that sort of busget would you still be better off getting a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X spec wise? Fortnite is crossplay on all systems right?

Fortnite on xbone supports keyboard and mouse and PC crossplay, and he might not realise that. I don't see any reason for getting a PC to play the game - she could just buy him a nice mouse and keyboard (and those would still work with a PC if he gets one in the future).

Would you guys think that an Xbox One X with game pass would be a better option in this case? He has an Xbox 360 and Nintendo Siwitch at the minute, Game pass would be great if he wants to try new games other than Fortnite.

!.) Would he need to have Xbox Live to play fortnite online?
2.) He can play with his freineds on PC right?

No need for an X. The Xbox One S will do him. And there’s a nice purple Fortnite edition.

Yes, he’ll need Live. Game Pass Ultimate includes that. Yes, he can play with his PC friend.

PC gaming isn't cheap and while it's modular, I wouldn't really call it truely upgradable. You're still limited by the CPUs that they release for the chipset your motherboard has and they switch them more often then console upgrade.

Best port of call for under £500 is second hand from Ebay.

I was expecting that topic about being able to build a £300 pc that could outperform a 360.

Pre-builds are actually pretty decent these days. A quick search found this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01IPOHNXO/ ... ljaz10cnVl

Obviously this is not going to be maxing out settings or anything but it will match the modern consoles no problem and iss near what you could cobble together yourself for the same price and offers a base for upgrading in the future or you are so minded.
