None. They will have all been written before the show.

I am extremely grumpy today for no good reason, woke up, checked my phone and saw the rinks quote and assumed there'd been some drama that I had to quickly correct

This isn't true though - there's a huge amount of "story" in Souls games, it has one of the richest sets of lore in gaming, just because it doesn't have a lot of cutscenes or dialog doesn't mean there isn't a hell of a lot of story telling going on!

Like I say I think there is scope for them to push this game slightly toward a more mainstream approach to conveying a narrative, but it needs to be done carefully so that the strengths of From's traditional approach are not lost

There's loads of story in souls games. I really enjoyed reading all the descriptions on items and stuff, as it hinted at what people had been up to, then you'd see the evidence of it dotted about (like mixing blood and eye transplanting).

I am going to HAVE to disagree with this and I may be alone too but barely comprehensible 'conversations' with NPC's and having to make sense of a phrase or read something you might have missed and connecting the dots is not a good thing, and I'm into Halo lore which can be a mess.

I would like a journal / quest log for NPC character side quests - then it might be possible to do them without a guide! - and a little marker on items in your inventory that you haven't read the lore for yet.

Besides that, it would be cool to have a narrative where your character has some personal stake beyond being the chosen one, and for that main story to "say something". It's not essential for me though. Like you, I wouldn't want it to come at the expense of feeling like you're slowly unravelling the inscrutable mysteries of the world. I really like that aspect of Souls.

No no no, I never want a quest marker in a souls game but a journal with the conversations? yeah that'd be cool.

 It's different though isn't it? Quest markers are criticised because they change how you interact with the game, whereas a log for side quests is just a reminder of what you're supposed to know and has been part of RPGs since the beginning of the genre.

EDIT: For me a side quest log would make the game harder because I would engage in trying to work out how to advance the quests rather than just following the "side quest mini guide" on some wiki.

Personally I really like the lack of hand holding (for want of a better term) in these games, it reminds me of the good old days of playing classic CRPG games where you would keep your own notes in real life - capturing thoughts and reminders about things in the world, sketching out your own maps of the labyrinthine spaces you are exploring in the game, slowly piecing things together yourself.

Also the community aspect is absolutely massive in these games, they are one of the few things that feels like back in the day when you would learn more about a game by sharing experiences with other players in the playground, understanding how to achieve a goal or work past a challenge as a collective experience amongst other like minded people

I agree with this to a point, as in, I feel the souls games go too far the other way, and I don't want a massive change, just a slight nudge the right way and a journal.

Assassins Creed Odyssey had a great system, at the start it asks you essentially how much hand holding you need/want. I had it at minimal so instead of a quest marker you'd get told 'He's been held East of the Atlas mountains' or whatever so you'd use a map, this was also coupled with the cultists who were all part of a large guild that wanted you dead and you found out about them kind of organically through clues (he knows a trader in the market in Athens for example) so you'd investigate it.

Don't get me wrong, it was still a little 'hand holdy' but I was disappointed the Valhalla didn't have it as an option, it does have the same cultist stuff though at least.

We're probably not going to agree but as someone who really likes the stories you can uncover with side quests in Dark Souls, I don't think having an in game reminder of the conversations you had with various people would detract from the experience. Like I said, for me personally it would keep me in the game trying to puzzle it out, rather than checking subreddits or wikis.

If you prefer the challenge of trying to keep it all in your mind then more power to you, I can see why you'd view any in game prompt no matter how small as detracting from that.

Perhaps in your perfect Dark Souls the item lore would be whispered in your ear once when you pick it up but that would be a bit hardcore for me. ;)

The story in Dark Souls is gooseberry fool because I've never once seen it explained what all the living NPCs eat and where that food comes from

I trust the involvement of GRRM will address this

A journal like they had in morrowind would be nice, you'd meet someone, then if you checked the journal after it would have a load of the player character's thoughts on them, the context of the meeting and so on. Something like that, even if it just repeats item descriptions in a list to read in one place. Or have drawings of areas or landmarks like Arthur's journal in RDR2.

Joke's on you, this is clearly touched on in DS3 when you find an NPC in a kitchen making soup.

(And whether or not you eat that soup has a completely unsignposted butterfly effect impact on an unrelated NPC, which causes them to either live or die.)

Man, Morrowind, I only played it for the first time a couple of months ago as it's on Gamepass, it looks ropey probably more so cos it's now in 4K but the world and conversations were still well written, I doubt ill play it ever again though as I don't have the time along with several other RPG's I dip in and out of...It feels like I've missed a gem though.

Here's a 108 page lore book for Bloodborne.

https://www.scribd.com/document/3570668 ... e-lore-pdf

These games have oodles of story, they're just told in a way that differs from normal games. I understand why having a narrative doled out through conversations and such can be seen as the only way to tell a story, but it really isn't.

Dark Souls and Bloodborne are genius in that they use everything in the video game arsenal to tell their stories. Loot, most notably, but also design and mechanics. Some creatures' entire backstory is wrapped up solely in their design and the context in which they appear (see: the centipede monks in Sekiro).

The story is there. You just have to want to find it.

This was meant to be called dark souls 4 going by the trailer. Everything seems to be taken from dark souls and its just been repackaged with the got guys name on it. Graphics looks last gen, but if it runs at 60fps, its good enough.

I can't tell you how amazing that game was back in the day. I'd never played anything like it. Proper A2 paper map with loads of interesting looking things to head for (little rando crosses here and there, and so on). No quest markers, no compass, just the descriptione of the environment to look out for given by npcs ,fast travel by more friendly giant bugs at towns only. Beautiful music, rich story. I played it for actual years.
