Main Ep 1 thoughts:

I thought that set things up fairly nicely. I'm pretty sure Bran won't tell anyone that it was Jaime who pushed him as his big focus is the big un-dead army threat and he knows that telling people about this will definitely reduce group cohesion...

I'm never sure if I like it when GoT does its comedy moments (other than Tormund. Bloody love Tormund). It doesn't feel in-keeping with the show for me.

Wasn't a fan of how easily Theon rescued Yara. That seemed far too simple. I almost genuinely shat myself at the message from the Night King.

Arya and Jon

Ser Jorah stood there awkwardly as Khaleesi told Sam she burnt his family  He didn't even like his Dad ffs.

A solid but not spectacular start.

Good opening episode. Felt more like a traditional paced one even though realistically some stuff still moved on quickly compared to a lot of the first few seasons.

Some great meetings, that I suppose they had to get out of the way. They ignored Jorah Mormont seeing lyanna Mormont. She’s his niece isn’t she?

Solid but unspectacular.

Feels more hit than miss when there's only a few left.

Good start and as I expected it to go. Really just a setting up the season episode.

I did however love that look between Jamie and Bran

Just a thought, when bran said to Sam he was waiting for an old friend, he actually meant he was waiting for Jamie the next morning. Mind well and truly blown!

Good episode, nothing great but the first episode is always there to set things up. Liked some of the reunions, the fall backs to S1 E1, that scene in The Last Hearth really made me jump, can’t wait to see how Bran and Jamie interact in the next episode, I still think that is who he’s talking to when he says something like “all you’ve done it’s brought you back here, home. Although now I’ve typed it out it sounds like it a that will be aimed at Theon.

Battle definitely going down in episode 3, wonder just how many of the main cast will actually survive. Jorah is definitely getting a Heartsbane before the battle.

One more brief thought,

Still no Ghost! I have a bad feeling they’re literally going to bring him into the battle for Winterfell just to kill him off

I didn't think it would be on Now TV's catch up, what with Sky advertising the heck out of it. Happy to see there's no adverts on there too.

Thought they'd have something big and spectacular to kick off the final season, but it wasn't bad at all.

Thought the opening march to Winterfell was done really well and loved the smirk from Daenerys when the dragons flew over. Most of the comedy bits worked well. Even the glare from Drogon (didn't Ygritte also use a line to Jon about disappearing into a cave for a long, long time?). Laughed when Jon asked Arya if she'd used Needle.

Wasn't really a fan of the reunion between Bran and Jamie as the final scene. Bran pretty much admitted last season that Brandon Stark is dead, and he's The Three Eyed Raven now. He seems to have very little emotional connection left to anyone. Not really sure the bit with young Lord Umber really fit with what we know of the Night King so far, but then again, maybe that's just not knowing him very well at all. From what we've seen so far, he doesn't seem like the sort of person that would waste time 'sending a message'.

That was mostly pretty shite.

Bran is just a plot device to let characters react to information the audience has, Jon and Dany's magic carpet ride was saccharin and lame, and Asha's escape/Theron's departure was just comically breezed over.

Hey, remember when Danerys was the freer of slaves? Now she just sasses about her dragons and being boss. Yas queen! Yaaas!

The writing in this show has been in decline since it stopped being an adaptation and became an original work. It's all zingers and fan pairings and it really sucks. On the bright side, I imagine most of this season is going to be large-scale spectacle which just keeps getting better as the seasons go on.

Was the final scene meant to be pure slapstick?

Thought it was mostly good. The dragons bit was pretty shite, mainly becuase that may as well have had 'a whole new world' playing, and did we really need one of the dragons to do a Tim from the office look to camera when they were kissing?

Bring on the massive battles and let's kill the entire cast off :datass:

I’m fully expecting at least 2 major characters to die in this season. No idea who will be on the Throne at the end but would love it to be the Night King just to ensure this really is the end.

Hope it isn’t Cersei, Jon or Dany who end up reigning. Too obvious or easy to be one of them. How about Gendry for a leftfield suggestion?

Definitely think they are setting up Gendry and Arya. Would be fitting too since at the start Robert Baratheon wanted his son to marry Ned Stark’s daughter. Of course they meant Joffrey and Sansa but it would be quite fitting if it turned out to be Gendry and Arya.

I’d be surprised if only 2 of the main characters got killed this season, I’m expecting probably 3 alone in the battle for Winterfell.

Would initially seem like an odd ending but having the Night King as the winner would be kind of satisfying, as you said it would be a definite end for the show and no chance of going back to it down the line. Also we’re going to be shown the Night King/army of the dead being defeated in the prequel series that they’re doing (as I believe it’s based on the long night) so it would certainly be something different.

They do seem to be heading that way, which means one of them will most likely die in the upcoming battle.
