I keep thinking of Warcraft, and specifically the Wrath of the Lich King climax. Would be kind of cool if to fulfill to Azor Ahai prophecy and kill the Night King, Jon has to sacrifice Daenerys, only to realise there needs to be a Night King to keep the undead under control, and he has to take up the mantle himself. With both Targaryens gone, it also opens up the options for who ends up on the throne. I don't think it will actually go down like this though as so far they've shown that killing a White Walker destroys the undead it had been controlling.

Watched this last night - bit of a slow burner. Agree with the criticisms, particularly the dragon ride. Not interested in any of that shite unless they actually made it a useful scene. They could have discovered some grim mass grave or something, but no, just fly around and have a kiss.

I'm sure it'll improve, which means I'm sure major characters will get butchered

I’d love the Night King to win, but don’t see that happening.

I’m really hoping though they they don’t do the obvious ending of Jon/Dany winning.

Part of me wonders if we will see an open ended 'bad' ending for the living, where the dead take Westeros but certain characters survive and flee, allowing HBO the possibility of endless spinoffs. Gendry & Arya's / Brienne & Tormund's descendants fighting the dead from Essos, anyone?

Leaving it open for any type of sequel is the last thing I want :(

You can’t really argue that the overall story/writing hasn’t been anywhere near as good since the book material ran out, still a very enjoyable watch with some almighty set pieces/moments but not as good as earlier seasons story wise. Letting them loose on a sequel would just be more of the same. I’m finding it hard enough to get behind the prequel as is, still would have preferred to see something else adapted rather than the long night.

There will be ructions if they leave it open and don't conclude it properly.

Anyone else not a fan of bowl-cut Bran? I find he's the least interesting of the "major" characters, there's just something irritating about the guy playing the part. I get that he's probably being directed to act that way, but it grates all the same.

I don't like the way he's seemingly only there to read out the plot to the characters.

That does seem to be the main force behind his character since he became the Three Eyed Raven, he knows what the viewers know and just helps the other main characters get up to speed with such things. I do wonder if he survives the series if we will see some elements of the old Bran coming back into him rather than the emotionless Bran we have now. It is just Bran as well, the previous Three Eyed Raven didn’t act in a similar, emotionless manner so I presume its how they want Bran’s Three Eyed Raven to be played.

Getting a bit fed up with Daenerys being such a smug bitch about the dragons.

Sanza: "I've prepared and rationed for Winterfell only. Now I have any army and dragons to feed. What do dragons even eat"

Daenerys: "Whatever they want" :datass:

Then ten minutes later, "Jon why doesn't your sister like me?!"

Anyone else notice the opening credits pretty much spells out where the show is going?

I mean surely they're going to trap the ice dragon Skyrim style in a keep and then shoot it in the face with the big crossbow thing.

Westwood did the same. Everything in the intro was a plot point leading right the way through.

+1 for Bran is shite

Like maybe I missed something, but what's stopping him from seeing Cersei and Jamie's conversation from the end of season 7?

The moment you introduce a power like that it leads to all sorts of "but why doesn't he just..." nonsense

Maybe he has, but thinks if he tells anyone, they'll turn their attentions back to Cersei opposed to the Night King

We did learn in dialogue that Ed Sheeran had his face burnt off and has no eyelids now. That amuses me somewhat.

jiggles wrote:That was mostly pretty shite.

Bran is just a plot device to let characters react to information the audience has, Jon and Dany's magic carpet ride was saccharin and lame, and Asha's escape/Theron's departure was just comically breezed over.

Hey, remember when Danerys was the freer of slaves? Now she just sasses about her dragons and being boss. Yas queen! Yaaas!

The writing in this show has been in decline since it stopped being an adaptation and became an original work. It's all zingers and fan pairings and it really sucks. On the bright side, I imagine most of this season is going to be large-scale spectacle which just keeps getting better as the seasons go on.

While this is kinda harsh it does sum up a lot of my issues with this episode and the show in general for the last few seasons

A lot of the reunion type scenes here felt very stilted and awkward; conversations that should have been more developed ended up being very hollow and lasted like 30 seconds. It just goes to show that the show writers simply aren't very good and simplified a lot of these characters

As said in the post above, what the strawberry float was up with Yara's rescue? Why even set up that whole plot point just for the climax to be 30 seconds long and mostly devoid of anything meaningful? A lot of this episode feels exactly like that, but I guess there's time for them to unfuck the character dynamics somewhat
also man why is daenarys such a bitch now; the writers doubled down on her shitty traits I guess to make Jon's side of things more sympathetic. but like, what the strawberry float? you just end up with the shell of what was once a really cool character
They also seem to struggle with Varis and Tyrion; it's clearly too hard for them to plot around the intelligence of those characters when everything's become so much more action and spectacle focused, and it's just sad to see these dudes reduced to background characters; especially Tyrion whom before season 7 was a main character

All that aside tho, much of the episode was solid and the last 20 minutes set up nicely for the next episode/rest of the season
