It's the most random shop. It really feels like the dying days of Grainger Games, with corporate pushing funkos, toys, phones and tat rather than games.

Argos and Asda are in walking distance and are cheaper for games. American sweet shop is opposite and has cheaper and bigger selection of American sweets, board games are cheaper at Smyth's which is also in walking distance.

Can't really understand who they are targeting with the store. Except parents at Christmas who don't know better. Last time I was in there I asked about the Switch OLED pre order and they said online only.... But..... You're a game store.... Called. ... GAME....

Wish my image sig would work

My local GAME have more shelves dedicated to Pop Funko than actual games after the insane preowned section.

And one solitary Lego set.

Reminds me of the dying days of Gamestation where the shelves were filled with stuff which when you took it to the counter was out of stock.

It's probably the outward tide of "old" hardware before the new stuff comes out, why would they get more stock in?

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. It was more that they had boxes on the shelves advertising items for sale which they didn't have in stock, the box I took to the counter was put straight back on the shelf. Video game stores are they only stores I've ever seen do this, it gives the illusion everything is okay when it perhaps isn't.

Most famously good old Woolworths, they were the worst fir doing that in the dying years

As an old Grainger Games employee, I can see the comparison but by the time Grainger closed up, pop vinyls were the only thing making a profit for them, working both in store and in the warehouse. We actually went into the black the month before we shut shop.

Should really do that AMA Grainger Games sometime

I was just looking at the first page of this thread and we were all predicting the death of GAME 10 years ago.

I'm not picking on KK, it's just an example of how wrong we all were.

Amazing really that GAME is still there.

They almost did though, I remember that fire sale fondly.

Surely not before long that GAME will disappear from the high street? They will carry on by popping up an online store.

That's the same prediction we all made 10 years ago.

I think GAME in the high street will outlast the cockroaches.

I went in there twice and it was busy both times. They’re not short of punters.

I *think* my nearest GAME store is still open; albeit I haven't been there since the pandemic lockdown started and - IIRC - the only game I've bought there in the past five or so years was a pre-owned copy of Avengers on the Wii U.
Living in saaf Lundn you'd kinda think that there would be a few gaming stores around but there are hardly any; supermarkets sometimes have a few games - though they're usually out of stock - and that's about it.

Oh, and the past few posts have changed title to "Game shares collapse" - I could be wrong but I don't think they have? If "Game Digital" is the correct one then that hasn't really changed for two years.
Edit: ^ Buy, yeah, they did in the few years previous to that!

I'm being thick here, but I didn't see the thread title change?

Also, I'm pretty sure the reason the share price hasn't changed in 2 years is because that's when they were bought out by Sports Direct (now called Fraser's group). So, there's no active market in shares any more.

To be honest, it's a wonder how so may of the shops bought out by Sports Direct are still going, I'm just surprised they didn't buy Woolworths and Blockbuster as well, but that's for another day.

'Games shares collapse' was the original title of the thread. If someone quotes a post from back then the title of their post becomes 'Re: blah blah blah'.
