In the good old day you could buy games for £1.99 or £2.99 on cassette. Really big new releases might cost £9.99 at the most but you would get a fancy box with those, rather than just the plastic cassette box.

Nice. I used to love the £1.99 budget game lottery.

Had a trip to both GAME and CEX today.... CEX makes GAME look like Harrods. The state of that place is genuinely shocking, screaming kids, loud distorted music and people arguing about not being able to trade in DVDs which look like they have been used as coasters.

Game is Newcastle just posted that the store is closing on Saturday. Thankfully the staff are unaffected and any preorders are being honoured at the metro centre store.

The location must have cost them a fortune. Now Grainger Games has gone that means there are no video game stores in Newcastle. A few years ago there were multiple Grainger, Game and even a gamestation in the city centre.

Thats my thinking too. The rent must have been too much for them to continue trading there.

There's Be More Geek on Clayton street which opened up in October, they sell new games but don't stock every new release and it's not thier main income, all the pop vinyl and collectables are thier main trade

Quite surprising for a major city to not have a dedicated video game store, even my town has a CEX and a GAME in amongst all the betting and charity shops.

Oh, we have a cex, 2 in fact. But in terms of getting a game brand new on launch day there’s nowhere now except Argos

Same happened in Durham, when I started uni there was a GAME and a Grainger Games, now there are neither. At least I thought Newcastle was only 15 minutes on the train...

In past years I've not often traded in games - mainly 'cos I've gone digital on PS4 and GAME no longer accepts games for older systems - but I did do so once last summer (around £100 worth) and again last week (around £35 worth). For the games that I traded in, the amount paid was pretty poor (awful for some!) but I just shut my eyes to it. On both occasions I part-exchanged as you get slightly more than straight cash; I bought console store credit and that last trade-in went towards pre-ordering Super Mario Maker 2 :-).

Sports Direct now owns 84% of GAME

Sports Direct's takeover of GAME Digital reached another milestone on Friday, with the chain's share in the games retailer reaching 83.88%.

Regulatory filings show that as of 1pm BST on Friday, July 12, Sports Direct owned, had agreed to acquire or had received valid acceptances for a total of 145,057,695 GAME shares.

It was reported last month the sports retailer, owned by Mike Ashley, had increased its share in GAME to 38.49%, which triggered a mandatory offer for the firm.

Sports Direct then offered to buy the company for £51.88 million, at 30 pence per share, and GAME's Board recommended that the retailer accept the offer.

As such, its share has continued to increase, to the point where GAME has now requested that the listing of its shares be removed from the London Stock Exchange. This is expected to take effect by August 12.

A final reason to never enter Game again. I always liked having a high street shop for new hardware launches but with Amazon, Argos and the supermarkets there isn't a place for Game anymore.

GAME are still promoting what they're now calling "Britain's biggest games magazine". I've been into 3 GAME's since it launched now and never seen it.

So they can print as many as they like of what will likely be an advertorial and use it for hamster bedding, then still claim it to be the biggest games magazine. Or, being sports direct, I'm surprised they don't just print it in A3 in order to make a similar claim.

I'm sad it's closing in Newcastle, but now SD own it, I fully expect a Game concession to open up in Mike Ashley's sporting goods jumble sale shop in the city instead.

It'll be a rack of FIFA and COD and a couple of gooseberry fool Fortnite toys. Plus energy drinks and maybe Cheetos.

Can't even get the names of games right. It's "Cyberpunk 2077", not "Cyber Punk 2077".

I have it on good authority that they are reopening later in the year (either in the same unit or somewhere biggger) with all that Beyond area stuff in the store like Metrocentre.

Well that's a relief. I do like to stroll through there every now and again and pick up the odd thing.

It used to be that Game (in general) had rubbish staff compared to other places. But since most of those other places have gone, the Newcastle one became pretty decent.

You could actually have a brief conversation with the people there and they seemed to know what they were talking about, or at least the ones I talked to did and it made it pleasant to pop into, so it would be a shame if it closed down altogether.
