So is it just the Windows version of this that's free?

I see they do a Mac version but you have to pay for it. Thing is, if I could get the free version, I'd probably then pay for the Upgrade once I know what it's like.

edit - Ignore me. The Mac version seems to be an old one and Studio only appears to be available on Windows.

Got this downloading now; quite excited to give it a go!

Am I right in thinking that you can only export anything you make to your smartphone with the pro version? Does the standard version only allow you to play on your PC?

Stealth Bastards / Stealth Inc. has received some great reviews. Was Mockmaster a programmer before this? Also GameMaker Studio is the SDK behind one of my most anticipated games of the year Hyper Light Drifter. If this provides a starting block for people to create something then that's fantastic.

Worth pointing out there are loads of great YouTube tutorials. Shaun Spalding's are especially good.

Bumping this topic to let anyone who missed it know, GameMaker Studio Standard is FREE to download until tomorrow (normally $49.99). I've upgraded to the Pro version (for sale price of $35), which will allow me to test games on my phone/tablet.

Also, I thought I'd share what I've managed to put together in the 5 days I've been learning how to use it. You can download my first wee game by clicking this link (it's a Windows .exe).

Still very early days, but I'm pleased with what I've accomplished so far.

Here's a list of what I've done, and still to do...

Done:
Drew all art myself, except the temporary character sprite (my grcade avatar!)
Character Control (keyboard or gamepad)
Acceleration/friction
Jumping
Collisions
Coins - animated
Scoring
Lives
Placeholder sound fx (public domain)
Jump-through platforms
Slopes
Parallax scrolling backgrounds
Title screen
Menu Buttons (mouse operated)
Snow particle effect (just to learn about particles)

Still to do:
Keys & Doors
Fix janky ladders
Enemies
Spikes
Water
Wall Jump
Trampolines
Control menu buttons with keyboard/gamepad
Complete options screen
Better sounds
Music
Game over screen w/ high score table
Multiple levels

If you're looking to make sound effects, there's a dinky little application called "sfxr" you might find useful. Just Google it.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

May as well pick this up as a minor investment - as you can test android at least. Then buy the export modules if I do something decent.

I already picked up some Unity tutorials for nothing a while back and most recently learning Python for text-based games. This will be useful to have in the bag as in March I have 2 days free a week plus some holiday coming up. Ample time to get back to making interactive thingies.

I don't have Windows otherwise I'd download your first game. If it's fully functioning then making it in five days is pretty cool. Have you any programming experience, are you super brainy, or is it really learnable for novices?

I've dabbled in programming here and there, but I'm far from an expert. I did an HND in Computing 20 years ago. GameMaker is not too complicated, especially with tutorials to follow.

It's by no means a fantastic game, but yeah its functioning. Still learning lots. Just got things working on my Android phone and tablet, which is pretty cool! So I'm thinking of making a bit.trip runner type game, as they work well on handheld devices.
