I waited until they eventually removed the payment junk and then picked the game up in a sale. It felt good to take that approach!

Indeed - I object to games that clearly do not value or respect your time, which lootboxes etc. are a symptom of. You don't have to buy them, but their existence means that the normal experience is diluted and dragged out to make buying them more attractive, as the Shadow of War devs said years after beating the "its just optional/cosmetic!" drum despite it being obviously bullshit when they took them out. Big open world action-rpg/shooters have become the ur-genre of this generation with hour upon hour of artificial fun; stuff to do that makes various numbers and meters go up and ticks things off a checklist and gives you enough happy brain chemicals to keep going but isn't particularly memorable or noteworthy after the fact.

My 'abandoned' list is pretty long this year, with some well-received games that just didn't click with me for various reasons, but the majority of things just don't interest me anymore. I was a huge racing game fan until playing GT Sport and Forza 5 for too long gave me an epiphany that I was just doing races to win them to get gold medals to do more races, there was no long-term goal, points rivalries or anything to keep my cognitive attention beyond "get to the front and get the shinies".

It's why I waited a year or so before picking up BFII for £15 second hand. The loot box, pay to win element is now no longer a thing of concern. You can still buy the odd cosmetic item with in-game credits but that's about it. Anything of any real value is now automatically unlocked. Not defending EA's previous actions, but there's no question that is has become a fun game with bags of content - as it should have always been.

I guess Sonic, bit that's been so long since the 90s that I'm not sure it even counts anymore. Most long running series I'm a fan of I'll keep an eye on, even with a certain gooseberry fool one. Like I wasn't the biggest fan of BotW or FFXIII, but I'll keep up with BotW2 to see where they take it, FFXIV is probably my most played game by playtime, and if they announce a FFXVI I'll be hyped.

I guess CoD would count as I had a run of about 4 or 5 years of getting the games, but now I couldn't care less

I don't really count Metal Gear because it's hard to remove that from Kojima.

Generally I'm pretty lucky with the series I'm invested in.

Don't buy any EA, Activison, Warner Bros. or Atlus games now, due to them either being scumbag companies who put in bullshit microtransactions, release buggy gooseberry fool they won't patch, or add ludicrous DLC.

Bathesda and Ubisoft are hovering...

Oh yeah, I guess Elder Scrolls, too. Morrowind is probably one of my top 10 games, Oblivion and Skyrim were ok, but it's been so long since Skyrim and TESVI is only really theoretical that I'm not sure how I'll feel when it comes out. But based on how Bethesda are handling Fallout I'll likely give it a miss.

The 3D mario games. Mario 64 was a revolution and also a good adventure. Sunshine was OK. But Galaxy left me cold - where the game should have been building on the level design, IMO galaxy had too many short bitty little courses rather than worlds. Galaxy 2 was an improvement, and Odyssey did a good job to expand on the world, but by then the damage was done, Ive got too old, and Mario is just another silly little kids game now.

I've put some things on the shelf because it, say, wasn't the right time to play some 80+ hour monstrosity (AC Odyssey) or stopped playing something because the gameplay in that particular entry is shite (FIFA20), but I don't have so little self control that as soon as a good game adds microtransactions I ban myself from playing it.

Maybe loot boxes and microtransactions ruin the gameplay for some titles but for the most part, the titles people make the most noise about, time and time again, are rarely affected in a way that is so significant that the game suddenly becomes unenjoyable if you don't engage with them. Some idiots are so easily worked into a fervour by garbage YouTube "personalities" whose whole bit is to get "good and mad" about the latest BIG PUBLISHER CONTROVERSY that any genuine discussion around how fun a huge release is to play is drowned out by toxic discourse and dogpiling.

The "fight back" and "take a stand" rhetoric is dumb and embarrassing. Don't play it if you don't like it. Who gives a strawberry float.

Good morning :slol:

Pretty much my approach to games.

I only abandon games that I can’t be arsed to play (main culprits: Bloated sandbox games (Assassin’s Creed, pretty much any Ubisoft sand box games.)

Micro transactions can be ignored.

I wouldn't say that I've dropped any series' entirely (as in I'll never return to them) but I'm holding back more on games from certain publishers and there are some series' which I'll only get when they're really cheap.

I've bought nearly every FIFA game within the launch window for probably the last 10 years but this one is the first one I've totally skipped, with almost zero interest in buying it. Did not really enjoy last year's edition and definitely have FIFA fatigue. I'm also very wary of EA's Star Wars games and despite being desperate for Fallen Order to be good, I'm going to keep well away around launch because I have no trust in EA after my experiences with boith Battlefront games.

For series' which I used to buy straight away, like COD or Assassin's Creed I will still generally pick them up eventually (Unless they're multiplayer only versions like Black Ops 4) but only when they come down to a really low price.

Stop buying the games, or at the very least stop buying them at and around launch. Simple as that really.

This.

The microtransactions were basically dropped from BFII before launch though?

The main reason I got it at launch was for the singleplayer anyway! That was free from all of the multiplayer controversy except for having some levels released later down the line (which I haven't gone back to play). So not the same problem as Shadow of War where the microtransaction stuff was all in a singleplayer game.

Mario is definitely silly - that's a great thing. :toot:

It most certainly isn't little.

And I couldn't give a gooseberry fool if it's for kids or not, it's just fun and should be enjoyed as such.

The whole game had been built around them and were ripped out at the last moment. I wasn't rewarding EA with a single penny for that piece of gooseberry fool.

Still refuse to, and that goes for Shadow of War too.

I'm not encouraging gameplay based loot boxes being in games from day one, and I'm certainly not encouraging publishers to milk them as much as they can before ripping them out and tossing what remains of the games carcass at us and expecting us to be grateful.

As I say the singleplayer was free from such influence, if the singleplayer is what is of interest (as it was primarily for me).

I bought a PS3 near the back end of the Wii U and no longer play anything on that. :slol:

I don’t really drop series. There are some where the games have got weaker but it’d take one well-reviewed game and I’d be back in. (See: Paper Mario, Mario Party.) Then some franchises have left Nintendo platforms - the big one is Soul Calibur there.

Otherwise the only one that really stands out is Picross e. I used to love picross, but the utter lack of effort, especially on their launch Switch entry, was the last straw. I found it borderline offensive.

I dropped most AAA games entirely when Xbox One and PS4 came out. I didnt like the look of anything they were doing, it was more shooters, more sports, sequels everywhere. It was one of the reasons I went with a Wii U and loved it, everything on there was so different from what Xbox and Playstation were doing.

In particular I dropped Halo, Assassins Creed, COD and Forza. I have since played the most recent 2 Froza Horizons but I havent looked back on the others. I keep meaning to play Halo 5 but theres so much other stuff on Game Pass I never get around to it. I also like the look of AC Origins and Odyssey but again I just dont have time to get stuck into them.

When not actively done it on purpose, I kind of more or less dropped Assassin Creed as I felt fed up by end of Black Flag, and I didn't want to spend money on game I may not play that much after amount of time or force myself to put up with it.

But that's all I can think of really, I have to be careful with money so I tend to go for games I actually am planning to play a lot of. Even if I want a game, there's chance I may just wait instead of getting it at launch and grab it when it's cheap. So... yeah for one example on this thread: Assassin Creed (and Ubisoft sandbox games now I think about it), but not because I'm against it, I'm just fed up of said sandbox games by them at the moment.
