PostGames you loved with sequels you missed, and why

A random thought occurred to me today: many of the games that I've at some point considered among my favourites ever, have had sequels that I've either only played years later, or skipped altogether.

Is it just me? Or have you done this too?

Notable examples:

Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 - adored these on the SNES; didn't get the third. I remember borrowing it from a friend to play but even so it failed to grab me in the same way. I can only presume the N64 was on its way. I've never fully finished it.

Banjo Kazooie - having 100%'d this several times I honestly couldn't tell you why Tooie passed me by. Got it years later as part of a N64 collection rebuild attempt but didn't like it. Only some more years later did I finally finish it (on 360) - the later levels are so much better than the first few. Aside from a couple of jiggies I've finished this.

Ocarina of Time - was a defining moment in my gaming life, and I was a disciple of N64 Magazine, so why didn't I get Majora's Mask? Played it in its entirety (and loved it) when it came to GameCube, though I've only ever played through it once. Unsure why I missed it first time round. Perhaps the cost of the Expansion Pack was prohibitive. And yet...

I loved the DKC games and Banjo so you might have thought DK64 was a cert but again, this passed me by. Eventually played it as part of my collection rebuild (not the same attempt as Tooie though) but didn't enjoy it - far too much character switching and backtracking right from the off.

MGS - loved Twin Snakes on GC and 2 on Xbox, but never had a PS2 so missed 3. Eventually played it as part of the HD collection on 360. It was alright... not a patch on the first two. Tried too hard to be a game, not a bonkers interactive movie.

RDR - the original Red Dead Redemption was phenomenal but I don't own a format that has RDR2 on it sadly.

Pokemon - played basically all the mainline games in Generations 1 to 4 but then stopped until Sword. I never had a 3DS but that still doesn't explain why I missed Black/White.

Dragon Warrior Monsters - oh how I wish I'd tried to get a copy of the DS sequels...

I'm pretty sure MGS3 has around the same level of cutscenes as the earlier games and is just as bonkers.

Banjo-Tooie is also one i just never got when it first came out, only got round to getting it a few years ago. Cant think why i never got it at the time, same with Majoras Mask.

An intriguing question, Dan!

Fallout 4. Now, I do own the game - I got it at launch - but I've never played it beyond the opening hour or so. This is a bit odd because Fallout 3 is one of my all-time favourite single-player games.

I've got a bit of form here, though, as I did a similar thing with Fallout 3; picking it up at launch in 2008, playing a wee bit but then never getting into it until I played through the game and all of the DLC during 2012/2013. Of course, Fallout 76 then released in 2018 and subsequently I've been pretty much addicted to that - I don't think I could play Fallout 4 at the same time.

I suspect that I'll return to the game in a year or so and I'm sure that I'll love it!

Same here Jawa. I loved Fallout 3, hated New Vegas (but perservered) but found Fallout 4 to be too much of a move away with the settlements.
It had lost its magic.
I'd play Fallout 3 again tomorrow and see it through - its just fantastic.

Yeah... Fallout 3  . I would dang well do (almost) anything to have got a remake, a port or a Wii U/Switch version, but I've kinda accepted that it's not gonna happen... or that, if it does, it'll now be Xbox-only.

I suspect that the settlement-building in Fallout 4 would draw me in, Mommy, as that's the aspect I love most in Fallout 76. I guess I'll find out for sure at some point!

Pikmin.

Loved the first two games, but never got a chance to play any further installments as i pretty much abandoned nintendo hardware altogether after around 2009.

A remake of Fallout 3 using the Fallout 4 engine and with a whole bunch of extra bonus locations and secrets would be amazing.

Loved Fallout 3, collect the full set of bobbleheads in it too.

I was also wondering, is Fallout 76 actually any good now? I'm guessing it's improved a great deal since launch, but although i've seen it on sale pretty cheap, i'm not sure if it's worth bothering with.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

I loved Ori and the Blind Forest so much. There were some very difficult, frustrating sections, but the story pulled my in right away. I persevered and thoroughly enjoyed it. One of - potentially the - game of that decade for me.

I was looking forward to the sequel, but then when it came out I just didn’t buy it. As soon as I got GamePass in 2020 I downloaded it, but I have never launched it even though I think about playing it a lot. I know it’s a very well received game, but I think I just subconsciously don’t want to risk tainting my memory of the first game if I don’t get on with it. Mad I know!

Dragon Age Origins - played the 2nd game and enjoyed it in spite of its flaws but couldn't play the 3rd as the devs completely changed the control scheme and play style to one I can't physically manage with.

Soul Calibur IV - I can no longer play beat 'em ups, which is a shame as it used to be one of my favorite genres.

Streets of Rage - played the first three but as seen above I can't play this type of game anymore so SoR4 will unfortunately elude me forever.

It was better than the fourth one, though that's not saying much.

Anyway, not sure I can think of many. Banjo Tooie was a game I owned but never really played it.

Every other game Ive loved i have played the sequel.

Some i nearly missed but played years later were Zelda Majora’s Mask and Pikmin 2. Although I haven’t played 3 but thats because 2 didn’t really set my world alight.

Jak and Daxter (PS2)

One of my favourite games, loved it so much that I replayed it over and over. Had zero interest in either sequel as soon as I saw a screenshot.
