I loved Ori and the Blind Forest so much. There were some very difficult, frustrating sections, but the story pulled my in right away. I persevered and thoroughly enjoyed it. One of - potentially the - game of that decade for me.

I was looking forward to the sequel, but then when it came out I just didn’t buy it. As soon as I got GamePass in 2020 I downloaded it, but I have never launched it even though I think about playing it a lot. I know it’s a very well received game, but I think I just subconsciously don’t want to risk tainting my memory of the first game if I don’t get on with it. Mad I know!

You really should, it's a brilliant game. I'm not sure if I prefer it to the first, but it's at least as good. The combat is miles better if nothing else.

Jak 2 and 3 are brilliant (as are Jak X and Daxter)

To appeal to the edgy mid-2000s zeitgeist

This is literally the game that came to mind. Almost identical story. I'm not sure if it was seeing guns in screenshots, or whether there was a demo of Jak 2, but it was a change too far. The first was probably the best platformer on PS2.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

LOVED Knights of the Old Republic on OG Xbox. Didn't fully get into the sequel because I bought it on PC and was new to playing games on it, so I just left it pretty much untouched. (Barely made it a few hours in.)

It was the guns - I tried a demo of ratchet and clank and didn't like it at the time because of the shooting focus, so the reviews saying it was shooting based put me right off.

It's not a shooter, it's still a platformer - mechanically the guns are like moves, like Mario throwing cappy or fireballs doesn't make it a shooter. There's loads of variety in gameplay and that's to its merit. Ratchet and Clank is also a platformer but guns are more of a focus in that than in Jak.

I wonder if it's because you like a game so much, that it's harder to muster up the energy for the sequel sometimes?

Like: You invested so deeply in the first (side-quests and so on), and have so much association and expectation for it, that embarking on a new one feels like A Thing. Something significant or loaded with expectation or the need for time or a chance to Do It Properly. And that is enough friction to put you off something lighter and slighter. Like, you can't watch Return of the King everyday, right? It's an undertaking - even though it's great. Maybe it's great because it's a full-fat undertaking that rewards a big investment. Which works in terms of pay-off and satisfaction but it's hard to build up that momentum again, knowing what's to come.

The Outer Wilds is one of my all-time faves, but that's because it rewards patience and deep engagement and the slow-grow understanding of its mysteries and systems. But they're also the reasons I've yet to embark on the DLC until I can give it The Proper Time (whatever that is), and so end up whacking on Tetris Effect again every time?

But anyway, I love Majora's Mask but have spoken to so many OoT-lovers who have never played it. Maybe because OoT is such an Epic that the idea of revving up the epic engine again is off-putting. Even Zelda dungeons themselves are great to have had done, but it's a bit overwhelming to first arrive in the Forest Temple to all those doors and possibilities. I guess starting Majora's feels like an uber-temple, never mind when you've heard about the time mechanics (which feel intuitive to play with but probably sound like a layer of complexity too far on top of a meaty dungeon epic).

Anyway anyway, for my part I never played Metroid Prime 3, despite loving 1 and 2 and thinking about them all the time. Probably a combination of not having a Wii (though I borrowed one for Skyward Sword) and maybe not feeling in the mood for the full-fat space epic.

I wonder if it's also that Metroid Prime 3, though I'm sure it's great, is still the same flavour of great but with new specifics - maybe sometimes you've had enough of a flavour to last you a lifetime? Like I think about Metroid Prime 1 all the time, playing another would just be an extension of a brain space that is already active and fresh and living in my mind. I've already got the Metroid Prime filter!

Or something.

Assassins Creed. I played up to Black Flag and loved them all (yes, even 1 and 3) but my interest in later games just wasn't there for whatever reason. I gave Unity a try but didn't get on with it. I haven't been tempted by any of the later games. I'm not really sure why my interest dropped off a cliff like it did.

Breath of the Wild
I've enjoyed most Zelda games I've played, but I don't have a Switch, and I'm not buying one just to play two games (see entry below), so I probably won't end up playing this.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Really enjoyed the original, but again, don't have the console, so will be a miss from me.

Jax & Daxter 2 onwards
Loved the original, but I've not interest in the sequels at all.

Assassin's Creed 2 onwards
I wouldn't say I loved the original, but it was decent enough. The bullshit plot put me off completely though, and I've had no interest in any of the sequels.

Dead Space 2 onwards
Again, loved Dead Space for the most part, but I've no desire to play 2 or 3. Felt like the first game was enough and I didn't need any more of it.

Ratchet & Clank (all sequels to the original)
Enjoyed the first, but there are so many sequels, and I've never been bothered enough to get into them.

I was a big fan of Kororinpa an early day Wii release, I didn't play the second one for ages and ages because when they released it in Europe they didn't do the smart thing and call it Kororinpa 2 they instead decided to go for the much more generic Marbles! Balance Challenge making it not only sound like shovel ware but taking away the fact it was a sequel.

Burnout. I played Burnout 2, loved it, skipped buying all of the sequels until Paradise. To this day Burnout 2 and Paradise are the only ones I love. I tried playing the others but they just didn't appeal in the same way as those two games.

Doom Eternal. I really liked the 2016 game and own Eternal on both Switch and Playstation but haven't touched either. I should put that right soon, because it looks even better than its predecessor.

Burnout 3 and Revenge were the best ones though.

Revenge wrecked Crash Mode.

Takedown > Paradise > Point of Impact > Revenge > Burnout

Not played the others.
