Gaming genres you once loved, but no longer/rarely play

For me it's fighting games.

For years I was a huge fan and would spend hours learning all the moves, combos and intricacies of any given fighter. These days, though, I rarely play them and on those occasions that I have picked up a fighting game I quickly become bored and move on.

I've still a healthy collection of fighters across several platforms, but the interest just isn't there any more.

I had the same idea for this topic a while back but forgot all about it.

For me it's also fighting games - street fighter 2 was always my favourite, I LOVED tekken 2, then VF2 in the arcades and VF on my 32x. My favourite for a long time was killer instinct, I loved it. Now thought I just have no interest in the genre, with the last one I tried being smash brothers on the Wii U after hearing how amazing the series was, but I ended up playing it about 5 times.

Racing games. I used to love them and have a big collection, but I was never good enough to play online (or the online modes were full of assholes) and a combination of the repetitive singleplayer modes of Forza 5 and GT Sport gave me the epiphany that most "races" in the genre are overtaking challenges against irrelevant AI to get a gold medal to unlock the next one and so on. I was just going through the motions to win at all costs as each race was only a handful of laps. On the other hand I don't have the time or inclination to git gud at the more hardcore simulator end of the spectrum and spend hours dialing in setups or shaving milliseconds off of lap/qualifying times.

I might go back to things like Project CARS 2 or the F1 games which offer more of a self-made narrative of progress and rivalry through their systems than a gold medal box-ticking exercise, partly motivated by videos like this:

Fighting games and light gun games. Fighting games because I’m no good at them any more, not that I ever really was besides wrestling games, and light gun because they neither make them any more nor do the old ones work. I miss them a lot though, and with current TV sizes would be amazing.

All of them.

JRPG's. I still love them, but the investment of time strawberry floating scares me now.

Fighting games and arcade racers, I can no longer use my left hand and can barely move my right due to the progressive nature of my Dystrophy and there isn't really a way to play either of these genres using just the mouse.

FPS games. I do like the genre but only very selective titles.

Racing games. Specifically the more arcade style racer I use to really enjoy-Burnout, Blur, Split Second from the last generation I really enjoyed. I think it’s partly because there don’t seem to be that many of the released now (although maybe I’m not looking hard enough) and I wasn’t ever into the more realistic sims which still seem to be doing well.

JRPG's - I poured so many hours into Final Fantasy, Pokémon, Dragon Warrior Monsters, Golden Sun and others in the late 90's/early 2000's but I've barely played them since and when I do I usually end up giving up long before the end.

It's not so much that I don't enjoy them anymore as I'm sure I would if I played one it's more that they're such a time sink and I always think about how many other games I could be playing in the time it would take me to complete one JRPG.

Western and Japanese RPGs.

Used to play a lot of them in the past but not as much today. The amount of hours you have to put in is enough to put me off today.

Fighting games. The last one I played was SFIV. And before that was probably a SF game on the Mega Drive.

GTA. The last one I really enjoyed was Vice City. I managed to finish San Andreas but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did for III/VC. Have played GTAIV and V but gave up after a few hours of play as it was too “realistic.”

First Person Shooters - I used to love these in the X360/PS3 era and would lap up most of the releases. These days I much prefer a third person perspective.

A couple of people have said this, but this was the most succinctly put version. Also the genre oftentimes seems reluctant to move on: see Dragon Quest XI, which I’ve just started but seems like a thin veneer over an underlying structure that’s starting to creak a bit.

I still manage to find time for quite a few, but I’m definitely pickier. I think DQXI is the third one I’ve really managed to get into on Switch, letting many others pass me by (Ys VIII and Tales spring to mind). Steamworld Quest definitely benefited from its shorter length.

Also, does it count if you’ve only played two games in the genre? If so football games. I love ISS96 (I think?) on the Nintendo 64, tried FIFA on the Wii and didn’t get on with it, and have never been tempted to pick up one that doesn’t star Mario since.

Football management games.

I used to love them, putting tons of hours into Football Manager on the C64, Championship Manager on the Amiga and Premier Manager. Even action-with-management versions such as Goal! (Amiga) and O'Leary Manager 2000 (GBC) were ace.

In the subsequent eighteen years I've barely touched a management game, though. I once bought the new Football Manager (in 2005; too complex and rather dull) and I briefly dabbled with PES' Master League mode a few weeks ago, but that's it. I'm surprised that there hasn't been a new management game on consoles... but, then again, I suspect they'd be micro transaction-ridden atrocities.

I recall that a GRcadian (suzzopher, I think?) shared details of how to play the old Championship Manager on PC / Mac so I may go back to that.

Have you played Mario Smash Football on GameCube? One of the funnest local multiplayer experiences ever.

Football Manager Touch on the Switch is fantastic, jawa. And no microtransactions in sight :toot:

For me, it's racing games. I used to have a decent collection but it's whittled down to zero. Re-installed Drive Club last night and whilst it was enjoyable, it did feel a bit like Trelliz described earlier in the thread.

I've also moved away from FPS games recently as my gaming is now more Switch-focussed, but I do still enjoy the genre when I have time to actually sit in front of my PS4 for an evening.

Totally accurate opinion, Drum. I'd recommend Goal Storm (PS1) for more astounding commentary.

There are genres that I like but rarely play for practical reasons like light gun games and rhythm games with unwieldy and/or loud peripherals. The latter genre I also like but rarely play in general, even when a novelty drum isn't required.

Slightly more in-keeping with the question would be FPS games, if you consider I was once massively into TimeSplitters 2 specifically. I've played my fair share since, the most recent being Superhot on Switch, but I don't play many and the last online FPS I played much of was I think Titanfall 2.

98! That’s the one. And no, I’m really hoping that Nintendo releases a new Mario Strikers some time soon.

I suspect you mean either ISS64, or ISS98 on that one.
