Gaming genres you once loved, but no longer/rarely play

Not sure where else to post this but a lot of people have mentioned live service/nickel-&-dimeing being a reason for dropping certain games: Arkane are looking for a 'Monetization Designer'

And lo, one of the last single player focused AAA studios follows all others down the live service path.

Peripheral based rhythm games like Rock Band or Guitar Hero. I used to absolutely love these kind of games, in fact my extensive collection of DLC for Rock Band is what made me hold on to my 360 for as long as I did after moving primarily to PS3. These days it's not like I don't like them anymore it's more that I can't play them anymore. I get terrible pains in my hands whenever I try and play this style of game now, don't know if it's some sort of early onset arthritis or something but it's a real shame I can't play them anymore.

Great, it's a Monday morning which is already bad enough and then Taf has to go and post something like that!

If Arkane get sucked down the microtransaction and monetisation route then that is one of my last remaining hopes for AAA gaming dead.

FPS games are a prime example, just to love them years ago and now you've played one you've played them all. Gone are the creative and fun shooters of yesteryear.

JRPGs are the main casualty. I just don't have the time or patience to sink into too many games these days so I had to cut the whole genre loose as it just takes too many hours.

FPS games are another genre I rarely play now. I used to be a PC gamer back in the early 2000's and played almost nothing but first person shooters for a good 2 or 3 year period and got kinda burnt out on the genre. I haven't dropped them entirely but I play them far less often than I once did.

I was thinking about this recently. One of the things I recall about my "early days" playing games is that I would basically play anything - adventure, fighting, racing, shooting, platform, RPG ... whatever was out there and I could either borrow or buy I would play! But over time I seem to have dropped quite a bit of this diversity, and it's hard to pin down an exact reason why.

Availability of games is part of it - back in the day I had 1 platform to play on and far fewer games were being released, so you tended to play anything that people were raving about regardless of genre. If you didn't have anything new to play and someone was up for lending you a game then you just took it! As the quantity of releases being made has increased and I have come to own more systems simultaneously there is now just way to much out there to even try and keep up with all of it so specialising in fewer genres is basically a necessity.

Time was also a factor, I don't have anywhere near as much time to devote to playing games any more so what time I do have I want to spend on something that I'm pretty damn sure I am going to enjoy. This generally works out but is a "safer" option and therefore does lose some of the joy of discovery that being more open with choices used to allow. How many gems have I missed out on because I dismissed something for being outside of the narrower parameters that I assess games against these days?

Main casualties for me are driving and fighting games. I've really enjoyed experiences in both of these genres over the years but I don't think I have bought a single game from either in the last two generations.

Mario Smash Football on GC was brilliant. The Wii version messed with the formula and so was inferior in my opinion but I would love a new version. It was a Next Level Games franchise, who are obviously about to release Luigi's Mansion 3, so the question is what they have in the production pipeline next. Their main other Nintendo IPs have been Punch-out on Wii and Federation Forces. I think it's fair to say we won't be getting a Federation Forces 2 but I wouldn't be surprised if we see a new Mario Strikers or a new Punch-Out in a couple of years.

The bit in bold is generally how I've been trying to approach my gaming, certainly since other hobbies of mine have come back onto play of recent. I'm confident my BOUGHT/PLAYED/COMPLETED 2020 list will look very different against the last two years I've engaged in the thread.

I’d love to see a new Sega Soccer Slam. That is awesome in local multiplayer.

I have largely dropped JRPGs in favour of VN's. I find the latter typically offers more in depth story (and a similarly long play time) without the anxiety of having to potentially grind or hitting a road block of some sort. Obviously many of them have limited game mechanics, but in all but a select bunch of rpg's i was playing more for the story anyway. P4G is perhaps a prime example of a game that would possibly have been just as good (or better) if the dungeon crawling elements were removed, and the systems simply dictated the story that would be told.

I would have finished P4G if that were the case, the dungeons were a slog

Yeah, they were just awful. But everything else about the game was (in my opinion) great. Im really glad i finished it as i thought the story was really good. But i got the same feeling of participating in a game even when playing something with far less mechanics (such as Steins:Gate), let alone a fairly fleshed out quasi VN like Phoenix Wright, Danganronpa, Zero Escape etc.

I like the monster designs but really I was just playing for the VN-like sections. The time limit stressed me out which led to me trying to complete every dungeon in a single night for maximum efficiency, which led to me burning out on them. That and the stupid low drop rates on getting items from enemies to complete side quests...

Exactly this. And because of this stress, i stop focusing on and enjoying the story, because i got tunnel vision on beating the dungeon. That then gives me 4-5 hours of enjoyable gaming before the inevitable shadow of the next dungeon begins to loom.

dropped it for about 6 months. Its probably the longest i have left a game and still actually gone back to it and completed it.

Yep Played Titanfall 2 easily the best shooter this gen, always been tempted by Superhot but isn't it a VR game?
