PostGaming loses its attraction for me - Anyone else?
by gaminglegend » Mon Aug 03, 2009 9:27 am

For over a year now, I've found gaming to just not be as fun as it used to be, I start a game, wait ages for all the system to boot up, logos to load, the menus, and to finally get into game play and then maybe end up playing only 20 mins, and seem to just get bored, and think I've a million of things more useful to do to pass my time.

Since university finished I've had loads of free time apart from when I'm at work, yet ive found it better to sit on my laptop, youtubing, facebook, grcade or msn. My PS3 at the moment is really being used as a dvd/blueray player, collecting dust inbetween. Yet I recall spending seemingly half my teenage years on the PS2/PSX/PSP/Gamecube/GBA. I just don't get it anymore.

Anyone else suffered this or felt this or has recently stopped playing games as much? Hopefully some good releases at Xmas will see me through but other than that, im very tempted to get rid of the console all together for a few months, have the cash. :|

I had this a long time ago when I was 16-19 and totally missed the Amiga/ST generation as basically I had better things to do at the time, then when I settled down a bit I went back to gaming and have had another 17 years of it so far.

Sometimes it just doesn't fit your lifestyle anymore.

I have periods where I'm playing games like my life depends on it and periods where I can't be bothered that much. It comes and goes. It's natural.

Pick up a 360, it got me back into console gaming big time. Infact gaming in general.

I got bored with my PS2 and GC for some reason, and even stopped playing PC games apart form the odd title.

If it weren't for Shatter and WipEout Fury HD, I would have no interest in gaming right now.

I've not lost interest in gaming totally, but I have lost interest in my Wii and DS. I even have some really good games on them to go back and finish, but I just can't bring myself to dig them out. The Wii's been in its box since April/May. I think the reason for this may well be related to a problem highlighted in an email I just this minute received from Amazon:

Dear Nintendo DS fan,
As you've bought or browsed Nintendo DS games recently, we thought you might be interested in new games coming out next month and beyond.

August is a great month to be a Nintendo DS player as big titles are confirmed for the following months, with games like Peppa Pig coming to Amazon.co.uk soon.

Even without buying the shovelware, it's presence still seems to disturb my enjoyment of a console.

I go through different phases like at one point I won't want to play anything, then I won't play my 360 for ages and then I won't play anything on the PS3 either.

In the past couple of days I've barely touched my consoles. It's all been about the handhelds.

I think we all have periods of disinterest in videogames. I get periods of boredom with gaming. Just can't be arsed with it. Luckily, I have other distractions like Music (a MIDI studio) to cater for me when I don't feel like playing games. As long as it's something creative (and I do consider videogames, even playing them, creative) I'm happy. It's good to take a break away from games now and again; nothing wrong with that at all. It helps to freshen the experience for when you do return to playing.

It ebbs and flows with me. I'm back on LIVE again because of the crappy weather (normally do not bother with gaming because of the hot weather in the summer) so I'm caning CoD4 and Call of Juarez at the moment.

Does the existence of GI Joe affect your enjoyment of your favourite films?

Not directly, in the same way that the presence of shovelware didn't affect my enjoyment of GTA Chinatown wars. The problem is, if there's a tonne of films like GI Joes out at the cinema, I'm less likely to want to go to there to watch anything, even if there might be something else good on.

I have never actually had this in over 20 years and I think its probably becuase I have a short attention span in everything. I have always picked up a game played it for 30 mins then tried another.

There is a dearth of titles at the moment that feel very samey. There needs to be a few more unique games coming out to try and spice up the market.

I adore gaming right now - I'm having loads of fun, and there's a tonne of stuff I'm looking forward to. There's almost something for everyone these days, genres previously thought dead/dying are making a comeback, there are plenty of viable platforms to choose from and the competition is fierce, popular genres are continuing to improve, lots of indie games are making their way to consoles and handhelds, there's a healthy amount of innovation, and I really enjoy the community side of gaming these days too.
I'd say this is my favourite gen so far! :D

I played games like they were going out of fashion in 98/99/00, and had played them since, 1988 or something. Then I went to uni.

I completely stopped playing them. I completely stopped keeping up on them (I stopped reading Digi/Game Central!). I ignored the Gamecube/PS2/Xbox gen for the most part. It wasn't an active thing, I just had other things on. I started drinking, hanging out in the local pubs and clubs, meeting new folk at uni, and obviously had a lot of work to do for my course.

Then, in my last year, my girlfriend bought me a Gamecube with Mario Kart:DD and Zelda, in December 2003. And that was me totally back into it.

Look at it this way - you might have lost interest now, and that's ok. However, in a few years, or whenever, there's this massive and super awesome safety net to catch you when life throws some gooseberry fool your way. Gaming is something you can look forward to coming back to.

Not quite but I'm getting there. I think this gen...with it's splendid visuals and genre busting features...just doesn't feel special anymore. In my opinion...I just need to make that clear - IN MY OPINION - ...this generation has offered me the odd flutter with inspirational gaming but, on the whole, very little has really pushed my interest. To me there are way more duffers than great games.

It's quite depressing...something I loved doing so much has, this gen, had a complete turnaround. To some degree I blame the platform holders but on the whole I look at developers that have this insane idea games in this generation need everything to be considered, features that don't belong.

Sad to say because of this internal push for more it's effected my experience. No longer is gaming pure, it's all about marketing muscle. This generation my interests have dwindled, the genre's I followed has dwindled and, quite frankly, my hobby has taken the hit.

Shame.

It's the smaller games this gen that have had me more interested. XBLA and PSN have provided me far more hours of greatness than the so called AAA releases. Uncharted, Burnout Paradise, Mass Effect, inFAMOUS, Crackdown, Valkyria Chronicles, Halo 3 and MGS4 have been the only big releases to have me excited.

I kinda know what you mean. I'm actually just getting back into gaming after not playing anything much for...well, quite a while, but only on my PSP. It reminds me of my gaming youth, of simpler games and simpler times. Yeah, I know that's an odd thing to say about the all-singing, all-dancing graphics whore that is the PSP, but what am I playing right now? Wipeout Pulse, which reminds me of the Wipeout games on PS1. Final Fantasy VII, an obvious blast of nostalgia. What have I got lined up to play? Star Ocean Second Evolution (or Star Ocean 2 as I knew it on PS1). My PSP is a real rose-tinted console.

Happens to me from time to time, I normally just take up a new hobby for a while but I always come back to gaming after a while, 3 months is probably the longest I've spent away
