Maybe we've had this before, but hey - new year, new topic!

What features of games make you do an immediate 'nope' and mean you're not even going to try playing it (even if the game has reviewed well and is apparently very popular).

For me the top one has to be 'randomly generated'

Levels, worlds, whatever. If I'm going to spend my time playing something, I'd like it to have been thought about, designed for the player to enjoy, be it a level, world, set piece. I also like it to be repeatable, so I can try a different approach or strategy (Or the same, if it was enjoyable!).

I know that 'randomly generated' features abide by a set of game rules, etc so that they are playable and beatable (in most cases!) but to me, knowing I'm going up against an infinite number of levels that are 'effortlessly' put together leaves me cold. I need closure, and I like good design.

Imagine buying music that's 'randomly generated' based on a set of criteria. Leaves me cold.

Also, 'jump scares' and 'online multiplayer only', but this post is long enough already!

I don't often make topics, so go easy on me!

Couch co-op. I get the appeal, but it’s not for me. Also, I hate the term itself.

I really dislike timers in games; complete the task in 60 seconds and the like. It just feels like work rather than fun.

I am also not keen on having to replay a lengthy period of play if you fail a task; restart points should be plentiful!

If I see the word "survival" and it's not immediately followed by the word "horror", you can get strawberry floated.

I'll never understand why anyone thinks managing hunger or tiredness makes good gameplay. Literally the two most cumbersome aspects of life and you chose to NOT omit them, given the chance? Sadist.

...are you me?

Direct corollary from 'randomly generated': 'roguelike' or 'roguelite'. Nah. No matter how good your algorithm, I can promise that I'd rather play hand-drawn levels. Then there are a fair few obvious ones, like ones related to genres I don't like or ones related to squeezing money out of me (e.g. 'pre-order now and get...').

I can think of one final one: 'your choices matter'. I generally don't like replaying games, so I want to play through once and see most of what the game has to offer. I don't want to have to go back to get the 'true ending' by playing it through three times and saving/sexing three different characters on the way.

Spot-on, jiggles. It is a pretty dull gaming mechanism!

I was referring to AYAMMM..... how far through the competition did you discover how to add checkpoints? :toot:

That's... a good shout, Lime. I revise my opinion to:

I am also not keen on having to replay a lengthy period of play if you fail a task; restart points should be plentiful!*

* Except for Super Mario Maker.

Games creating false urgency by having some dudebro shouting at you to reach a checkpoint or move to the next area or whatever. Just stop hassling me and let me play the game at my pace. CoD, I'm looking at you.

The game is built around crafting/survival mechanics.
Modern retro-styled games that are so pixelated as to be borderline unreadable.
2D platformers/metroidvanias in general.
Games whose selling point is how difficult they are.
Roguelikes.
Live services.
Lootboxes.
Games which have "card packs" shoehorned in.

Racing games with a timer/finishing position you have to beat in order to continue.

One of the worst culprits for this was Toca Touring Cars on the PS1, whereby you'd find yourself battling for 4th and having a great race (which also provides good points for the championship), only to be told it's game over when crossing the line because you were supposed to win (even though the lead car was 20 seconds up the road).

"Hey, Ramirez, sorry to ask, but when you have a second, could you pop down to Burger Town and see if you could help out? I think it might need defending, or something? You'll know when you see it. Only if you're heading that way, mind. No big rush. Cheers, pal."

The words “procedurally generated” usually kill my interest in something as do insta-fail stealth missions.

Mobile/touch screen style control schemes in PC games

Currently playing Book of Demons which is kind of like Diablo with deck building card game elements (weapons, skills .etc are cards which you set on the bottom of the screen), its fairly good but there's two game mechanics which are really starting to wind me up to the point of uninstalling the game.

Firstly, some large enemies can stun you with their attacks, this then blurs the screen and you have to 'grab' several stars which float round the screen before you can regain control of your character - Why is this a thing in a PC game?

Secondly, similar to the above, there are some enemies which in addition, 'dislodge' your cards, which requires you to click each one back into place to re-equip them/

As sometime with extremely limited hand movement, this kind of thing is both unwelcome and very offputting.

Games where you have to die loads to memories the pattern of jumps or whatever for a level

Games where you need X number of points to unlock the next section amount you redo levels you were gooseberry fool at over and over

Timer sections where you have 60 seconds to gooseberry fool loads of ackward gooseberry fool

Games that don't give any clue what you actually need to do on a puzzle so you end up having to Google it

Forced online co-op gooseberry fool, I want to play on my own I don't mind being in an online world but don't make me well with others

Can't think of anything that common that completely puts me off games.

-Will say though I don't really get those hack and slash games where it seems like you're just mindlessly mowing down groups of enemies like in Dynasty Warriors. It's what put me off Hyrule Warriors despite the the fairly positive reception and how cool it looks in some ways.

-Games being online-multiplayer-only is a bit offputting for me too, and I include games with a threadbare singleplayer just so they can say they have a singleplayer. That said, it depends on the game. I enjoyed Overwatch, and I wouldn't mind a cheaper online-only version of MK8 for example.

-Certain mechanics that make a game easier in a bid to appeal to a wider audience. Such changes aren't necessarily bad and are welcome sometimes, but sometimes they go against what makes a game series fun or interesting for me.

-Have a pretty love-hate relationship with turn-based RPGs, and these days it's more hate. Combined with a length of 40-70+ hours, I'm probably going to give it a miss despite being very tempted by a pretty aesthetic and the promise of a good story/set of characters.
