Yup. It almost crashed the Xbox Online service due to how many times it was downloaded/played so those hard copy sale figures are completely meaningless (not that it's not interesting to see them being made. Monkey's reportage is, as ever, appreciated!)
Agree its pretty meaningless overall but still interesting. Even more meaningless with Game Pass and especially Gears 5 being advertised for Game Pass not Xbox.

Gears 5 breaks records as biggest launch for any Xbox Game Studios game this generation
Thanks to the incredible support from our fans, Gears 5 kicked off the Holiday season strong – attracting over three million players in its opening weekend and setting new records for Xbox Game Pass with the biggest launch week of any Xbox Game Studios title this generation. The performance easily doubled the first week’s debut of Gears of War 4 and made Gears 5 the most-played Xbox Game Studios title in its first week since 2012’s Halo 4. First week performance includes the four-day early access period beginning Friday, September 6, which was exclusive to Gears 5 Ultimate Edition and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members. On the PC, Gears 5 has nearly tripled the performance of its predecessor, becoming the biggest-ever launch for Xbox Game Pass for PC, and Xbox Game Studios’ best-ever debut on Steam.
So has anyone finished the campaign? Pretty sure I'm near the end and was actually given a choice which character gets killed off between Del and JD. Del lived on, he stuck with Kait and JD was an arsewipe so he got the chop RIP in pieces, wiv da angles now.
I'm not even sure why that choice was given, your choice (which is the same one I made) is obviously the one the game intended. A bizarre decision really.
Ive been playing some more horde now. A few observations;
The Embar has been nerfed. Alot. You definitely need a good Del (Engineer) player. A team putting power into the fabricator for Del is needed. A good Jack player is a big help. He can be fun to play to get assists. The perks mainly top out at about level 6. Many of them have diminishing returns after that. Mulchers and trishots and buzzsaws on a weapon locker are very useful. JDs power is good. But apart from that ive not played him much so i dont see his benefits. You can no longer scout/tank the game. So Kait and Emile are good in the early rounds but less so later (- see JD?) Dont be afraid to uproot your fabricator/ base after round 10 to get closer to the energy taps.
So I've installed the Ultimate Edition on my PC via Gamepass and when I went into the video options and the option to install the Ultra texture pack, after pressing to confirm the entire game has just hung. No progress bar, no responsiveness, nothing.
Is it just downloading the textures in the background with no progress bar and the game hangs completely in the meantime? Is it because the game itself is still downloading via the Xbox app and I'm playing while it downloads?

Likely because your still downloading the game, when installing the texture pack via the graphics settings it will display a percentage bar while it downloads.
So, tried Horde, first game great, all team mates randos no AI, everyone picked their character played until they had to leave we got to level 38, which is fine for me for a game with randoms. Was actually the only game I had time to play
Tried again that evening, my god, a mess of people leaving after two rounds, character conflicts not being resolved and people leaving because they can't be who they want, not being able to fill the whole lobby....torrid.
So contrasting to say the least.
Trying to level up the tour of duty at the moment (for the achievements not the gooseberry fool cosmetics) it's a novel idea. And Free, take note other developers.
Campaign progress has been massively slowed by BL 3 but have put some time aside to get it done today/tomorrow
Posting this here because there isn't a separate thread, but I just made Gold rank on Gears Pop, without spending a single penny! I have a slightly unorthodox method that gets me a lot of abuse, but it works.

I'd say share but If I never play that pointless gooseberry fool game again it'll be a day to soon.

I quite like it as a time killer, and it sure is fun to beat people who you know have spend loads of cash on it.
My entire game plan is just to launch seven Hammers on the opponent's leader, winning the game. All seven other pins are for defending, just try to keep your towers alive as long as possible. Place troops behind towers as soon as they start getting shot at. Grenades are great for clearing out large groups, sentry is good against emergence hole (place behind your base so it doesn't get shot up). If one base is destroyed a decoy over to the other one works wonders. Stun Tracker directly on a close enemy is a good tactic too. Seeder ASAP in the back corners (preferably protected). Use Hammer as soon as they come up.
