Gears 5

As Kait, you’ll journey across the biggest and most beautiful world we’ve ever created while the war for humanity escalates on two fronts – outside the capital city and within Kait herself.

To give you a glimpse of her story, we debuted one of the real-time cinematics from the game on the E3 stage.

This clip reunites the franchise cast including Laura Bailey (Kait Diaz), Liam McIntyre (JD Fenix), Eugene Byrd (Del Walker) and John DiMaggio (Marcus Fenix) and features music from acclaimed composer Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones, Westworld, Gears of War 4) who will return for Gears 5.

Because it’s Gears, you can play solo or with friends in local split-screen or online co-op, all at 4K Ultra HD resolution with stunning HDR at a smooth 60 frames per second on Xbox One X.

Developed by our team at The Coalition, Gears 5 will be released in 2019 for Xbox One and Windows 10 and will come to Xbox Game Pass on the same date as its global release.

Skiff can be used ingame and is used to go across different places. You can use vehicles in previous Gears game but were limited "down hallways" etc. This seems more a vehicle to explore and to be used across different places. This falls also in line of some tidbits we get that the game is more "open world" or has open world aspects.

Any word on whether four-player campaign co-op is back or is it going to be two player like 4 was? That was disappointing.

Urgh open world segments? Why does every game now need them? Gears of War's best battles were always in enclosed horde-mode-style arenas, where you had to move, use cover and flank. It doesn't need open world sections.

I'm also unsure why they've shortened the name to just "Gears". It annoys me for some unknown reason, though any developer that calls themselves The Coalition obviously lacks any awareness of what a good name actually is.

Bah, I'm going to go yell at a cloud somewhere.

Yeah, really it should just be "Gears", as there haven't been any other games called that.

A great showcase for Unreal Engine, Alex takes a close look through the upgrade changes evident in Gears 5's new E3 trailer - from the focus on seasonal weather effects to improved shaders. It's a stunner, and the trailer is presented here at 4K too.

There's a swarm effect similar to that scene from The Matrix Revolutions which was quite impressive. Motion blur is finally starting to look good in games. Unreal Engine is really shining this generation, and it's not confined to a single art style like last time.

Characters don't looks great thought, very uncanny valley like Horizon Zero Dawn or Assassin's Creed Origins, they need to shift to scanning real actor's faces. It's a shame as there's a lot of detail and animation going on, but it's clear it's done by hand.

As a whole though it looks lovely.

Gears is what I always called the franchise as GoW was the abbreviation for God of War. In lieu of the recent Kratos game I think this is likely a way to teach the audience to do the same. Gears of War, meaning the dehumanised cogs in the system, is a good name. Its a big brand, I hope Microsoft don’t give that up.

GOW4 was initially revealed as just Gears 4 as well, before they eventually slapped the full title back on it. Wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing happen here.

I've always enjoyed the Gears games so it's not surprising to me that I'm interested in this, but there was something I can't quite put my finger on that made this look especially appealing during Microsoft's show. I hope now that the Coalition have experience with the hardware and the license, they'll really come into their own with Gears 5.

Gears Tactics looks cool as well.

For a single player campaign, Gears 4 left me a bit cold. I hope this is better.

The Coalition have said for a while that Gears 4 was the safe "prove we can make a Gears Game" game and then they'll make further installments more experimental.

Resetera verified insider -

Customizable weapons, 20x larger campaign maps, much longer campaign, more dynamic and various environments, brand new Horde, and different PvP experience.

Gears 5 will blow minds? Yep, I believe.

20 x Larger maps! :toot: :toot: :toot:

:|

Only thing I care about in Gears 5 is bringing back 4 player co-op.

Glad to hear the campaign is longer. I felt it was over too quickly in 4.

I don't think the problem was a short campaign it was more the DeeBees being a gooseberry fool enemy and it just ending the way it did on a gooseberry fool cliffhanger. I enjoyed 4, single player and multiplayer so really looking forward to it. Hell, Gears is one of my all time favourite series and was the reason for getting an Xboner.

Gears 4 was absolutely dreadful. Like, even more disappointing than Halo 5. This series seriously needs a proper reset, alternatively it needs to strawberry float off.
