It’s manufactured by Teenage Engineering and I’m such a fanboy of theirs, I own two of their synths.

This is a 100% guaranteed buy for me.

If anyone thinks this device is expensive you should see the new price of their flagship device, the OP-1 :slol:

The Playdate certainly looks to be an interesting bit of kit and I'm intrigued by the games "season pass" approach. I'd love to see the system take off but I wonder how many folk will be willing to splash out; perhaps it could be a bit of a gamble?

It feels like it could be tremendous fun, though.

That's crying out for a fishing game.

Shame the screen is b&w though.

I've seen a load of people go apeshit for it but...I don't understand. It's $149 for 12 mini-games and a gameboy. It's cool but...meh.

Yeah I don't get the fuss about it. It's more the fact that's it a one-time thing as well. You pay (upfront) for 12 unknown games and then that's it. I wonder how many of those games are going to be keepers and long term things. The season pass approach almost encourages you to put them aside for the next one, and I wonder how long the games and console will last once that season is over.

You can probably get a 3DS and a few games for that price. It's a more advanced system with a massive library. Sure, it's old and on the way out, but if you didn't own one you could definitely get more than 12 months out of it. A Vita and 12 indie games would be a better proposition too.

If it only had the screen and two face buttons, would there be that much clamour for it? In which case, is the crank going to be enough to warrant the price tag? Do you think it's going to be fully utilised in those 12 games and a genuinely interesting, new way to play? Seems a big leap of faith to make. The whole thing strikes me as making a quirky gadget just for the sake of it.

Gaming as a whole has a bit of a reaction against the season pay/pay up front model. Presuming the hardware doesn't cost £150 to make, you've suddenly got a very expensive, unknown season pass. But it seems more acceptable because they've stuck a crank on it.

There seems to have been a certain 'worthiness' attributed to the project too. It's got an underdog vibe to it thanks to the familial marketing and the crank; a new contender entering the ring to compete against the titans with a big old chunk of nostalgia driven novelty.

I mean, it's Little Miss Sunshine: The Games Console.

The 'disenfranchised 30-something with disposable incone desperate to rekindle the joy of their youth' market is a lucrative one. Expect a few pictures on twitter of people with beards and receeding hairlines holding them with the same open-mouth expression.

Yup. I mean I have no desire for it to fail or anything, I just think it's a super niche product that's getting a huge amount of publicity and I don't know why.

On another subject, got told a massive* Gaming Industry secret yesterday. #insiderknowledge

As a disenfranchised 30 something desperate to rekindle the joy of my youth I certainly wouldn't buy one of these piles of gooseberry fool.

Just buy a Mega SG and some old games or just y'know emulate the gooseberry fool out of every old console you can imagine.

If Keita Takahashi (Katamari) and Foddy (QWOP) are on board then I'm on board.

Every single game made by Foddy I've seen looks utterly dogshit and impossible to control.

So if nothing else it will at least be a well made piece of tech.

QWOP and GIRP are masterpieces but I will add that being impossible to control is most of the appeal.

A designer known for games with novel controls designing for a console with novel controls seems like a good fit to me!

Big feature on this in the latest edge. It looks intriguing but it's a lot of money for a cool but low tech device.

OP-1 is a solid device, absolutely. OP-Z?

Hmmm.
