It’s my understanding that their handhelds have carried them through the years that the home consoles failed so if anything the success of the switch will have them try for more portability rather than less.

They definitely have when the home console sales have been relatively poor, the Wii and DS era being the odd one out, guess it’d just be typical of Nintendo to try and reinvent themselves again when they’re onto a very good thing.

It'll be an "integrated hardware-software" product, use the existing Nintendo Account setup to "create touchpoints" and have "value-added services".

More seriously, I wonder if the next system will be a handheld/TV hybrid like the Switch? I'd imagine that it'd be difficult for Nintendo to drop that capability now?

I really hope they keep the hybrid system as it just makes so much sense for Nintendo games.

Looking forward to all the switch ports in 2025 :toot: :toot: :toot:

oh im sure theyll stick to the wii u ports as they know how much you love em

Hey, Poser, good to hear that you got back in touch with your NES! How have things gone - is it working now?

Finally got into the NES at the weekend. It was actually in really decent condition throughout; relatively little dust and everything looked pretty clean. There's a bit of discolouration on the case but it's not so bad that I feel the need to bleach/treat it.

However, even after cleaning the contacts it's still not working, so I have bought a new 72-pin connector to replace the existing one (black thing, bottom of the final pic).

My son's really keen to see it working so I'm hoping this works. Going to attempt to put it on tonight if I can get 15 mins to myself.

Ah! Great to hear that you've got the NES project underway, Poser, and I hope that you can get it working. It'd be so neat to get your lad playing it!

There's a single trace you can cut on the motherboard to bypass a rom check and pin check (the system checks every single pin is connected even if it does nothing) and region check, effectively making it region free so it will play ntsc carts, you may want to try that if the new connector doesn't help. That circuit can be useful though for (a) checking region and (b) essentially self tests so if the cart doesn't load you know there's something wrong. You don't need 100% pin connectivity or region block so arguably it's paranoid anyway.

Also make sure the cartridge traces are super clean, and I mean polish them.

I've deliberately bent the pins on my pin connector so that they grip the cartridges firmer although arguably this just means they will wear out faster and end up where they were before which was typically too lose.

Having to insert a cart a couple of times to get it to work isn't even remotely abnormal for these coming on 40 year old consoles.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Cheers for the advice, I'll bear that in mind. I wasn't sure what to do next if the connector doesn't work, so the mod gives me a route through if necessary. Thanks

About once every 3 years I type 'Earthworm Jim 4' into google. A new Earthworm Jim cartoon is coming out - looks decent with quite an adult sense of humour.

And apparently the transphobic price of a creator is nowhere near it!

FFS wasn't aware of that before.

Also looks like a game is in development...but heard that before

The game is in development exclusively for the Intellivision Amico... but it's gone darker than the console itself with no release date other than a vague expectation of it coming some time after the Amico's also-uncertain release.

It's always felt like an "exclusive" that won't last and will come to other platforms later to reach a wider audience. If it actually comes out at all!

The Amico console has recently entered manufacturing with a launch being anticipated for end Q1 2022. The Earthworm Jim game for the system is early in development and a release date has yet to be announced.

I mean Earthworm Jim 4 has been in development in one form or another since 2008 so you'd hope they'd be past the "early" stage by now!

Yeah, the new Amico game is not Earthworm Jim 4. That project never got off the ground to any great extent but it's good to hear that we're gonna see the character return in a new game on the Amico. The Amico game's title is yet to be confirmed but it is unlikely - though never say never! - to be called Earthworm Jim 4. Then again, it would get attention... so you never know!

Only just seen this but the animation-style alone has at least half-sold me! (only half because I have no real familiarity with EWJ)

Incredible.

Same guy also did a fairly decent vocal cover of Soundgarden's Jesus Christ Pose, albeit without the ridiculous power of Chris Cornells voice.
