My grandparents had a NES in the early 90s when I was a kid and I adored it and eventually convinced my mum to buy one for me. Other than a few brief goes on SNESes at friends houses, this is pretty much all I played until I saw an N64 in a shop one day and it blew my tiny mind. Had every console since then.

It's put my in this weird place where I have pretty much zero nostalgia for the SNES era and the classics that came with it. Super Mario World, Link to the Past (which I only completed for the first time last week) are all games i've only played in retrospect and don't really push the same buttons that they do for seemingly everyone else.

I have a big case of nostalgia for the N64, but that usual dies down when I try to replay the games from it :shifty:

Finally, this thread should be built on the foundation of the correctest take of all: Diddy Kong Racing > Mario Kart 64

Let me just jump on the history revealing before posting about the American-only Mario Edition Game of Life.
Oh. I just did. Well, onto the history lesson, then. As much as I can remember, anyway.

It was very much Nintendo handheld / Playstation TV-based console in this household for quite a few years. The original Game Boy with Pokémon Red and I'm pretty sure a few other games that I can't really remember (I know of a Mario game and a Speedy Gonzales platformer, but that's about it). I can recall having Pokémon Gold and a Game Boy Colour, though not much else with it. Then the GBA followed with Pokémon Ruby and a number of other games, including Sonic Advance 2. It wasn't until around 2002-2004 that the first TV-based console from Nintendo entered this household with the Gamecube.

I loved everything about it, from the first games I played on it - Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Pokémon Colossuem, and Smash Melee, to the controller and the console's design in general. I'm pretty certain ours came with a GBA Player, as I always felt 'cubes without one looked naked - and I doubt I'd have that view had I seen it without the attachment first. Then again, I'd have spent the most time with it attached than without, so I suppose I just got used to it. Either way, I loved it. And while plenty of PS2 games would be rented from Choices (what a great place that was), all of the 'cube games I played were bought. Just a shame a few of them were sold along with the console once the Wii arrived - including the much better of the two Pokémon 'cube games.

The Wii was a truly fantastic gem of a console that got me deeper into the gaming culture. Thanks to being bought ONM which made me realise how much I'd been missing out on and wanting to get in on it straight away. Before the Wii came the DS, where I had already started the dive into gaming culture by broadening my horizons a bit. Owing to the then popular thing of just using an R4 card with a ton of pre-installed games. Back to the Wii, and the games I owned were... varied. Games owned were still bought by my parents, so while I had a few of the greats such as Wii Sports Resort and Mario Galaxy, I also managed to accrue a few duffers - including Mini Desktop Racing and Wheelspin. All of the duff stuff did get sold on, but the collection I have is still a good one.

The 3DS was great, if slow to start. The collection of games for it did grow a lot in later years when I finally started buying my own for it. The WiiU then arrived in 2013 (for me, at least), where the games on it were great even if I hated (well... maybe disliked would be a better term) the Gamepad. Then there's the Switch, which I think is my most favourite console ever - aside from the Gamecube. Such an absolute great library of games. I'll edit or post rankings later, as I need a bit more time to think such through.

That's an interesting thought, Rula... a "Nintendo-only" console ranking?

Mine is:

1) Switch - The handheld-and-TV capability is fantastic and the range of games is excellent. Not so keen on the dull user interface, phoned-in Wii U ports or the joy-con, but it remains a terrific console.

2) N64 - I so like the chunky, colourful vibe; of both the console and the games! Carts, controller, game manuals; just lovely.

3) DS - The dual screens, stylus and incredible variety of games make this my fave handheld.

4) 3DS - Really, in my eyes, this is better than the DS; but the range of games just wasn't as good overall.

5) Wii U - I will forever praise Miiverse; I've not felt such community spirit with any other console. Being a U owner was like being in a cult. A good one  .

6) Wii - I'm so fond of the system. The controllers were innovative and inclusive; the Wii remains the console that my older friends and family will use.

7) Game Boy Color - Took the Game Boy and made it better; a great upgrade and an even bigger gaming library.

8) Game Boy - A classic example of the whole experience being better than the individual parts. An amazing game library... and the dinky carts are so cool and cute.

9) SNES - A cool console but I was never that into it; I preferred the Mega Drive.

Never owned: NES, Virtual Boy, GBA, GameCube.

That was so tough. On another day I may well take a different view!

Oh now handhelds count as consoles. :P

For me it's original Game Boy as the worst I've played, GBA, GB Colour, N64, Wii U, 3DS, Wii, Switch, DS, and GameCube the best - but it's such a muddle of head and heart, machines that have aged like milk and machines that have benefited from nostalgia, that I'm not sure it means anything to anyone. Including me.

Sega MD + MCD. Add on the 32X and we're really talking  .

I did like the SNES; especially ISS / ISS Deluxe. Zombies (Ate my Neighbours) was cool, too. But, yeah, I was more of a Sega guy at that time.

I really wish that this is the aesthetic that continued to evolve with tech. It just looks great. Sadly it started to go away even before the end of that generation with the MD2 / MCD2 combo.

But to bring it back on topic, Nintendo was better.

Oh, man yeah. The Mega CD II was okay but the Mega Drive II... ugh!

I've finally been reunited with my NES, plus a handful of games. It's currently not working properly - powers up but the red light flashes, probably the 72-pin connector. So I'm going to pull everything apart and clean it all up, probably with the aim of selling it once I know it's all functioning ok.

I'm currently debating whether to try to retrobrite the console itself, so while I'm researching that I started with the Advantage joystick.

If I can get it all firing properly I should have a decent little collection. I've got Super Mario 1-3, Metroid, Solar Jetman, Urban Champion, Excitebike and possibly one other that I've forgotten.

Weirdly, of those, Urban Champion seems to go for the most money.

It was very good indeed. I especially remember Mario Maker working really well for it.
