Bit of a strange one this - Past few days our internet has absolutely been shocking. I'm paying full wack for Fiber Max super mega addition. Trying to install anything at all and It's dragging it's way through at less than 500kbs.
Tried all the usual stuff, Router on and off, disconnect some devices, changing the wireless channel. Nothing.

Any ideas? No way for us to go wires either. Router is in the living room and we're in the office.

Probably some old dude nearby firing up his ancient TV: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-wales-54239180

But genuinely not sure what you can try there, have you contacted your ISP? Is there no way you can do a wired test, even temporarily? That might help isolate if it's a WiFi problem

My brother is looking for a new laptop for Christmas and asked for my advice, but I don't know gooseberry fool about strawberry float, so I turn to you lovely folks.

His budget is £350, and it will primarily be for his photo editing and suchlike. He specified that it has to be Windows, not a Chromebook, and that he'd like to be able to play some Steam games on it, but it's not essential.

Any suggestions?

At that price point it doesn't really matter.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

depends on the photo editing software. I use Photoshop and Lightroom and they barely run well enough on a surfacebook :dread:

Yeah £350 is a very tight budget for a Windows laptop, you'll be looking at a low powered Celeron machine at best and that is going to struggle with even desktop tasks let alone gaming.

I remember emailing in to PCgamer mag about a sub £1000 laptop to play ArmaII

their published answer was world peace would happen first.

So it's either pony up or just get what you're given, I suspected that might be the case.

Cheers all. :)

I'm considering buying an external HDD to shuck and use as an internal drive in my PC for high capacity general storage. I've found an 6TB model with a decent discount, however it's a 'desktop' model that requires addional mains power in normal (external) use.

My question is, if using this as an internal drive, does this matter? Is the standard internal PSU connection perfectly fine for this? Can't seem to find any sources that specifically say, so just wanted to check before dropping money.

This is the one I'm looking at. Unfortunately the reviews amalgamate with other non-powered versions so hard to tell whether buyers have done it with specifically this model.

At the end of the day a harddrive is a harddrive - I see no reason to be concerned.

I just looked at a shucking video for it (used your model number but might not be exactly the same) and it should be absolutely fine. I've only ever taken hard drives out of set top boxes but they're just standard 3.5 inch models with PSU and SATA inputs. Apparently the main minefield is whether you'll get a shingled magnetic recording drive which is apparently sub-optimal for certain tasks (no idea about that though...)

Edit: just be really careful when opening it and you should be able to reassemble into an external HDD if it doesn't work out for you.

Thanks guys  Didn't even cross my mind to look for a tutorial video so will check those out before I do anything to it.

Placed an order for a similar 8TB model in the end which had the same price per gb.

Yo, so I recently got a legion 5 pro (3060 5900h) for about £950, it's great except the touchpad doesn't work. I sent it back, they replaced motherboard, still doesn't work, so i'm going to return for a refund.

There seems to be so much choice when it comes to replacing the laptop, i'm struggling. I find a cool build, i google it, i read 'this has xyz issues AVOID', this happens for each thing i consider.

Can anyone recommend the go-to best gaming laptop around £1200 - £1500 (3060 or 3070, 11th gen intel or 5900) which has decent build / not gooseberry fool service ? This is actually for work however i will be using it hopefully for games (hehe) - however for work it must have direct access to the dGPU; found out the easiest way to know if a laptop has a mux is to see if it supports g sync.

I'm way out of the loop on PCs these days but my guess is that it's trying to boot from a location that it can't find (network? USB?) or there is a USB in it that it thinks is a boot drive and it isn't.

I need a new laptop as mine was stolen yesterday (along with loads of other things)

I previously had a HP Spectre x360 15" from about 4 years ago, cost £1.5k

I'm not able to spend that kind of money currently, and the new model is £2k

The things I liked about it when I bought it:

Better than HD screen (it was 4k)
Large screen size (15")
Touch / pen input
8GB RAM
Half decent processor (mobile i7)
Dedicated graphics chip
More than 250 GB storage
Sleek metallic design

Things I didn't like about it:
Cost, was £1.5k
Noise - fans were pretty noisy, and occasionally had coil whine from screen
Charging port - USB C isn't a great adapter for a laptop charging cable, feels to flimsy
Touch pad, after a year or two it became more difficult to click on certain aspects

Things I used less than I thought
Pen input
Gaming - so graphics chip might have been overkill

I've found the following which seems pretty good, only thing standing out to me is 1080p screen but I guess that's standard for cheaper models.

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing ... 3-pdt.html

It looks nice, decent RAM, SSD, form factor. Might be worth checking out.

Any other recommendations from anyone?

I don't have any.

Edit: it was in someone else's car too, not from home.
