The biggest advantage I can see is they seem to be marginally faster than the competing brands, but given that this will be my first move into the world of SSDs, anything is going to be an improvement.

My only gripe with samsung SSD's are they run strawberry floating hot. That said I have never had one fail on me and they are fast as balls. I think most people like them as they are sturdy and unlike everything else they make the SSD range are very reliable. They have earned the rep they have.

From what I understand, Samsung are one of the few companies that actually manufacturers the memory modules on SSDs, and they tend to come top of benchmarks and are reasonably priced.

WD are good too. Not sure on any others, although SanDisk is the only one I've had problems with, but that was years ago.

Apparently WD use SanDisk drives.

Can anyone recommend me a decent little small-form-factor PC? Nothing too expensive, all I really need it for is to run Visual Studio 2019 so 8GB is probably a must. Can't be strawberry floated using Bootcamp on my MacBook any more.

How small are you thinking, just like a smaller desktop type or something really small like a NUC (Mac Mini style PC)?

I recently got an M2 SSD from Samsung to go alongside my two normal SSDs from them and by god best decision ever.

I've got my eye on one of those atm but need to check if it'll fit on my mobo.

Fairly confident it will but probably best to check.

If you've got an M2 port it will do, but be warned they're really awkward to screw in - they come with the worlds smallest screw it felt like to me.

Something like a Mac Mini.

It's not a market that I'm massively familiar with but there are loads of mini PCs available these days, here's a list from Ebuyer for example: Micro or Mini PCs. These will all be about Mac Mini scale.

I know the Intel specific "Next Unit of Computing" ones are pretty well regarded but beyond that I'd look at price/specs/reviews and see what fits for you

My PC has started randomly blue screening once or twice a day. It sends me back to the BIOS and then refuses to boot Windows until I hard reset the thing. After that it boots up again without issue. Any ideas?

I noticed Windows 10 was not up to date so I installed the latest update. Hopefully it was some error that they introduced by mistake and have now patched.

I had that issue a few years ago on Windows 8, and one of the things I think caused it was that I never turned it off - only to sleep. Do you turn yours off?

Nah, I always do a proper shutdown at the end of the day.

I'm dreaming of building a brand new PC next year to replace my current one which I must've built around 6 years ago now. It's not a bad machine but it's definitely showing its age and I don't think it's worth upgrading.

I've had a look at the great/excellent builds on PCpartpicker and wondered where to go from there. Do they come recommended or will I be better tailoring something more carefully?

I've got a grand saved in the PC fund now but I'll also need to buy a better monitor and Windows 10 so I'm not sure if I'm better waiting a few more months or not. I don't keep up to date with hardware so I'm not aware if any changes, updates or discounts are incoming that I should wait for.

You can get a Windows key for a fiver off eBay, no need to spend the £100 or whatever it is some of those part picker sites charge for it.

I didn't know that, thanks. Why is there such a massive price difference? I assume they're legit but do I need to be careful using eBay? I mean, that's amazing if I can save an immediate £95 like that.

I might put a build together over the weekend and post it in here for some advice, if that's okay.

They'll be OEM keys most likely, they're supposed to be sold alongside hardware (i.e pre built systems) but there shouldn't be any issue using them.

Thrown together a first draft this morning. Not sure if I've made any faux pas so I'd appreciate some more intelligent opinions than my own.

£187.98 CPU - Intel Core i5-9600K 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor
£24.99 CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
£189.56 Motherboard - Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
£58.00 Memory - Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
£117.00 SSD - Samsung 860 Evo 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive
£165.97 HDD -Western Digital Black 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
£592.82 GPU - MSI GeForce RTX 2070 8 GB Video Card
£50.95 Case - Phanteks P300 ATX Mid Tower Case
£88.98 Power Supply - Corsair RMx (2018) 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

£1476.25

Is the GPU overkill for that build? I want to future proof myself as much as I can but the price seems at odds with the rest of the build. Or have GPU prices really just hiked up that much recently? If so :dread: Maybe swap it out for a GTX1660 and saving £250? It's the first thing I'm looking at to get the price down, at least. Also maybe a smaller HDD to reduce the cost wouldn't be a bad idea? I've gotten by with 1TB for 6 years now.

I haven't even looked at monitors yet but I'm currently using a ViewSonic VX2370 1080p monitor. Would you agree that I'm going to want to get a 4K monitor to make the most of a new build? It might be something I have to buy at a later date, unless I keep saving for a few months and get everything in one go.

Basically, I didn't expect the price to go so high quickly! So I've either made a mistake with picking parts too expensive for my needs or I'll need to keep saving up just a little longer.

That does seem high , I was looking on pcpartpicker and it seems you could pick up an EVGA Black 2070 super for £485.00 on amazon which is £100 less for a newer card. If you wish to stick with MSI there is a MSI GAMING X 2070 Super for £485.

I would also change up the SSD to an M.2 NVME, a Intel 660p Series 1TB is £90, or an ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro for £117. If you are really wanting a Samsung the Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive is going for £125.

That's way overpriced for the GPU, I just bought a 2070 Super for over £100 less than that!
