I'm hoping one of you clever people can help me.

My girlfriend's laptop has been giving her some issues lately where out of nowhere she gets the "your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. we're just collecting some error info and then we'll restart for you" blue screen.

I'm guessing something was recently installed that went wrong but I'm not sure. I've tried watching a couple of videos but I've not found them very clear. Also, in these video the % has got to 100% (such as in the spoiler box), where as this isn't going over 0%.

Anyone had any experience with this?

Hopefully it's a simple fix, but I suck with this kinda stuff :fp:

Cheers

can you give us a bit more info? Laptop type etc.. guessing it is Windows 10

first port of call is here: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-dxgm ... s-computer

looks like a driver issue. If the error is happening before or during start up/boot then you will need to try and get into the BIOS first or try stating the device is 'safe' mode

Sure, it's an Asus VivoBook S14 S406UA (a few years old). Yes Windows 10.

The problem seems to be whilst it's already on. Just now it happened when she wasn't in the room but was in the process of using it. I don't think it's happened whilst starting up or anything. She just mentioned that when she restarted it the battery was in power save mode. No idea if that would affect anything though.

You could trying resetting the OS (type "reset" into the search bar). This will refresh all the system files and hopefully blitz the bug. This will also remove the applications you have installed (I think it does this case any of them are causing the issue) which is a pain, but you will keep your files. Never had to actually do it myself.

If that doesn't work I would guess it's a power supply issue.

If it happens when it is on, then do try doing a system restore. The error suggests it is a driver issue.

I've had BSODs since owning my current PC, think it has something to do with plugging it in to a dodgy power socket which blew my laptops GPU too. Never been able to get shut of it, and once it happens and reboots it's fine then till its fully powered down. Just replaced my PSU which was surprisingly easy, powered on first time was expecting to blow the thing up.

The problem with my gf's laptop seems to have gone. I updated a bunch of drivers, and so far she hasn't got the stupid blue screen.

Sadly I have an ongoing issue with update 1803 on my PC. The update keeps failing and restarting from the restore point, getting to about 84% during installation. Then I constantly get pop ups to restart my comp, which then fails again. I thought I could stop automatic updates, but that doesn't seem to be an option. No idea what's going on but it's seriously annoying.

On windows 10 can you not just pause all updates for some really far off date?

Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update >Advanced options

I'm sure I tried that but it didn't give me the option to do it that far ahead. I'll have another look tonight. Either way it's pretty irritating, and searching online it seems to be a common problem with 1803.

I had to download the update from microsoft as the auto update was gooseberry fool and kept crashing, the windows update assistant seemed to allow me to update.

Cheers, I'll take a look at that.

The problem's actually be going on for ages. I swear every time there is an update it struggles to install.

1803 goes end of life this month so you may want to do an os refresh and fix it or you will be with any security updates.

As for stopping updates you can’t as it’s a gooseberry fool idea.

Hmm, never heard of TeamGroup before so that would be something to look at - I try to stick to the bigger brands when it comes to storage (Samsung, Crucial, Kingston etc.).

1TB for around £80 is a decent deal though - but again you can probably get a similar deal from a potentially more reliable brand.

I guess I'm a bit out of the loop, and I'm not really sure who the good names in storage are. Are Western Digital any good? I recognise the brand, but can't recall if their reputation was any good

Western Digital used to be pretty good back when I paid closer attention to this kind of thing. That was for hard drives though, so I don't know if that carries over to SSDs.

Yeah that's my thoughts as well, WD were certainly a solid name in the HDD space back in the day but I'm honestly unclear as to how they stack up in the solid state era.

Samsung is the top dog in the SSD space.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I recently got an M2 SSD from Samsung to go alongside my two normal SSDs from them and by god best decision ever.

From a quick Google and reading a few tech forum threads, the WD Blue drive sounds like quite a good one. The biggest gripe from reviewers last year was price, but it's obviously come down now. The equivalent size Samsung is another £10. Is there significant value in going for that brand?

Everyone does seem to shoot their load over Samsung SSD's but I've never heard particularly compelling evidence as to why - they're certainly well regarded though so it's hard to ignore.

I'm probably a bit biased against them as the only drive I've ever had fail on me was a Samsung about 15 years ago!
