That seems like everything. Not a bad build. One thing I would say is there isn't enough RGB, unless it is using a significant wattage just on lighting you don't have enough.

I'm not overly keen on the corner of my room glowing like Chernobyl, to be honest.

Having a bit of an issue with screen brightness on my laptop. It seems pretty dim, and when I go into the settings to change it, it doesn't appear to do anything. If I go back into the settings it has just reset the brightness slider.

Is this a common issue with Windows 10? It's actually making it quite hard to use.

I'm sure I could swing it, but if I'm gonna make that kind of jump, would it be worth going that bit further for an RX 5700?

Maybe. I was considering going the 5700xt route before getting the 2070 Super but temperature and driver problems put me off and I like having the option of Ray Tracing even if there’s been very little of it in games so far.

Save yourself £100 and buy the Ryzen 5 3600. I don't think the X version is worth the premium as it's just really a binned and and pre-overclocked version of the non-x. That way you can afford a better GPU. I'm not really sure about bothering with mechanical HDDs these days either.

Also, is there any particular reason you need a fully modular power supply?

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've taken it into account and thrown together an updated build. Knocking down to a Ryzen 3600 means I can push even further to an RTX 2070!

I know mechanical HDDs are a bit old school, but I've got a crap ton of ROMs and stuff I'll want to hang on to, and similar sized SSDs are waaay pricier. I was just gonna wipe my old PC and palm it off on my nephew, but push comes to shove, I might just swap over the HDD I've got.

No reason I needed a fully modular PSU, other than aesthetic. My current one is just a mess of cables.

Same 2070 Super I have, not a bad thing I could say about it so far. Temps are fantastic and it's quiet and when heavy gaming it very rarely hits 60c.

Replaced the fan at the back with a £3 one from Curry's..

Can someone help me, I always seem to struggle with gaming on my PC!

Trying to get Superhot to run. On the download page it says it should run fine, but predictably when I try to play it it runs like ass. Now I remember last time I tried to do this I had to manually assign the NVidia graphics chip to the game to get it to work, but I can't remember how to do this. All the guides say to use the NVidia control panel, but this must be outdated info as it doesn't work. Anyone able to give me an idiots guide?

My PC's PSU failed the other day, and I've since replaced the PSU (exact same type as before (Corsair CX 750M)).
However now when I try to play any game the PC shuts down within a minute of starting the game (before even getting into the game proper, just at the menu with very little going on). There's no error message when it boots back up (there was when the PSU failed, saying something about the PC shutting down because of something to do with the PSU).
Is it likely the PSU dying borked the motherboard in some way? I can't see that I've done anything wrong in setting it up, though that's certainly a possibility.

p.s. The PSU failing was entirely user error, it was installed upside down. PSU was cooling itself down with air from inside the case :fp:.
Faint smell of something burning right around when it cause the PC to shut down.

When you boot the PC back up again have a look in the windows event log to see if there is anything recorded for why it is shutting down, that may help identify the problem.

Does it only shutdown when you are trying to play a game? Is it fine with browsing the internet etc? Have you tried just letting it idle at the desktop and seeing if that causes problems?

Code: Select all

Level: Critical
Source: Kernel-Power
Event ID: 41
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

^ That has accompanied every sudden restart so far.

So far no issues using it for things other than gaming. Which for me is mostly browsing the internet. Keeps going for hours.
I thought it could be the gaming drive that was borked so I moved some games to another drive and it seemed to work okay, until it didn't (was playing Portal 2 and the PC restarted a second after the lights in the puzzle chamber went out and Glados said something like "Hey, who turned off the lights?").

@OldSoulCyborg: I would try to stress-test each component in turn. You can test your RAM with https://www.memtest86.com/, your CPU with https://www.mersenne.org/download/#stresstest, and your GPU with https://geeks3d.com/furmark/.

It sounds like your PSU failing caused some slight damage to the GPU or motherboard. But all sorts of things are possible. Ideally you might even want to test a third PSU in case you've been incredibly unlucky and the second one came to you a bit broken.

Got a new LG 1440p monitor yesterday as if I'm working from home for a while and even once normality returns, I wanted to use a similar two screen set up as I would in the office while upgrading from just a single 1080p monitor.

My GTX1060 doesn't really love having to play newish games at 1440p, so the older one will do as and when I need it. Is there an easy shortcut for setting a game onto a specific monitor? I know some games from the last few years allow you to do it in their settings, but am I right in thinking there isn't a universal solution aside from forcing which monitor is the main display?

Depends what you're using it for, but generally I would lean towards 1440p 144hz

I think this is right (someone correct me if I'm wrong!): I think FreeSync is for AMD graphics cards and G-Sync is for Nvidia graphics cards, so make sure you get the right one.

That's right. Also gsync is far more expensive that freesysnc for some stupid reason.

There's a lot of FreeSync monitors now that support both, they just don't have the more expensive GSync module that does a bit more, and adds a considerable cost.
