Ah, yeah, true, Ironhide. I'm kinda thinking that the only solution would be some kind of (expensive!) upscaling kit; maybe the type of tech that some of the more hardcore retro gamers here use.

Something like the OSSC (Open Source Scan Converter) will set you back somewhere between £120 and £150 but from what I can gather it's money well spent if you want to play 16/8 bit consoles on modern TVs.

Alternatively you can pick up an old PVM monitor from Ebay but I don't think they're that cheap anymore as people have realised that retro gamers have started buying them.

OSSC was one of the best purchases i made for my setup. Made such a difference and its well worth it.

A PVM would be nice, but as you've said the price has rocketed in the past few years.

Most modern TVs won't even have SCART inputs, though they may still have some form of Composite/Component input...

...Upscalers specifically designed for games aren't especially cheap (OSSC is £144), but they look excellent and know exactly how to properly handle older systems...

Thanks, Dev! My older screens have SCART - and two have component - but, yeah, it seems that an OSSC-type device would be needed for my newer screen. For now I don't want to splash that kinda dough on a solution but it's definitely something that I'll explore in the future. Thanks for the tips, dude, and I may pick your brain when I do decide to get into that upscaling approach :-).

Ironhide, thanks also, man! It's certainly something I'll look at in future months although, for now, I'll stick with the Wii2HDMI and just play the Wii games rather than the older Virtual Console games.

KK wrote:I wouldn't mind some sort of HDMI converter for my PS2 but I don't know which one to buy.

I don't own a PS2 myself, KK, but it seems that devices similar to my Wii version are available for the PS2. This one is
£12.99 at Amazon and has generally positive reviews!
Be sure to read the setup instructions in the description first, though!

Yeah I wasn't suggesting you get one for your situation. Its definitely for the more enthusiast retro set up.

Oh, definitely, man - in the future I'd love to get one 'cos I have a fair number of older systems that I'd like to connect to modern screens. Once I'm back at work an OSSC could well be a purchase :-).

I got an early birthday Present today from my other half, a Power Kiddy Q90 handheld console, id asked for one cause I wanted to mess about with one, im pretty darn happy with it plus I took the Micro SD card out of it and put all the files on my PC to go through the roms and see if there is anything I dont have... I also added a few games on to it like Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday and Ringside Angels.

The unreleased and seemingly almost finished Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition from 2006 by Core Design has been made available to download: https://www.tomb-of-ash.com/trae-indy-build/; https://archive.org/details/IndyTRAEbuild. Supports an Xbox 360 or Dual Shock 4 controller on PC.

These are a cancelled Indiana Jones game by Core Design. It was a re-skin version of the cancelled Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition that Core Design was developing soon after TRAE was cancelled.

“Artbase” contains the main core of the assets – locations, character models, tools used for development, geometry etc. This is currently the most complete collection of assets. The “levels jan 2006” archive contains certain level files that have different timestamp from those in “artbase”. They could be exactly the same files, we currently don’t know but think it could be important to preserve all the versions for historical value.

Looks more like a PS2 game, though apparently this was supposed to be for PSP.

Shame it was never finished and released, allowing Core to redeem themselves in the process, but Anniversary was (and mostly still is) superb, so it's not like players got the short end of the stick on this one.

Wish we'd got an Indiana Jones game though (the irony being TR was of course originally going to be Indiana Jones in all but name). I remember the 2003 game on Xbox was actually pretty good. PS2 version was a bit ropey mind.

Might have to check that out KK. Looks interesting.

Going back to the TV chat with Jawa, here's a relevant article that can be an interesting introduction for anyone wondering about CRTs and scalers, etc.

One of my best friends used to work for Core during its latter days. He was the lead concept artist on this. They were going to implement a 2nd playable character and have wireless co-op. According to him Core and Crystal Dynamics were working on both anniversary releases simultaneously and the Core one got ditched at the last minute for no reason. He still holds some resentment towards Eidos for all his hard work going down the drain. During the last days of Core when they were clearing out the offices loads of stuff was just going in the bin and he managed to rescue it all. He has a pile of material from the development of Herdy Gerdy and Project Eden and its fascinating to look at. He's talked in great detail about how Core was ran into the ground by management who thought they were all rock stars for the huge bonuses they were getting paid and how they brought in a Wunderkind lead designer who used to just discard all ideas apart from his own which did not help team morale.

He previously worked for Gremlin as well and worked as the track designer on Fatal Racing and Motorhead amongst others. He is full of loads of interesting stories about development during the PS1 days.

Carlos, your pal may want to get in touch with a chap called Frank Gasking who specialises in looking at videogames which didn't make it to launch. He runs a website called "Games That Weren't" and also recently had a book published under the same name. This could be a good way for your mate to share those stories!

He's been pretty reticent about sharing any of the material publicly because of some sort of potential lawsuit. I'm not sure who owns the licence for the old Core games but he's worried he could get sued.

Arcade1Up are to release a Killer Instinct cabinet; including the arcade version of KI plus Killer Instinct 2, Battletoads and Battletoads vs Double Dragon.

I do like the look of these cabs but you have to be pretty dedicated to have the space and money for them. Have any GRcadians considered getting a cab or two?

To be honest I wouldn't bother getting one of these myself, I used to own a real arcade cab but had to leave it behind. I'd look at getting a real cabinet again, I still own a neo geo mvs one slot arcade board and about 8 carts plus capcom CPS1 board with Pang 3 and a bootleg rip of board based on taito football.

I considered making the AdCade a mini killer instinct cabinet, but as the pi isn't powerful enough to run it, I decided against it in the end. These look cool, but they're too small and I'd rather pay more and get a DIY full scale cabinet instead (as they're expensive enough as it is).

I did(n't really) know some guy in uni halls who had super street fighter 2 I think on a cabinet, or some other side scrolling beat'em up, possibly final fight? Had a blast on that once or twice, it sure was a welcome distraction not actually socialising with anyone I didn't know anyway. That said, I played it with a girl, might have been her place, might not have been... Same street? All the houses were ex-council so looked identical.

If I ever had the space and money to get one I'd probably get Final Fight
And then probably regret it

I got MagicSword a loose Jap cart for SNES which cost me £6 including postage, pretty happy with this as I used to play my brothers copy a lot as a kid and it usually goes for more.

Also got Shrek 2 for GBA loose cart only for £1

Been messing with the powkiddy q90 taken the PS1 games off it as it's not really possible for it to emulate it well and figured chuck them off and add more gba, SNES and megadrive stuff.
