Is that the same game as the "classic coin-op"? Because if so, then they definitely outsourced that cover production. To someone who'd clearly never played the game.

It was probably produced either for the western computer release and/or as an arcade flier.

If I was going to take a guess I'd reckon it was commissioned by US Gold for the computer versions, and was probably trying to evoke the highly popular title Renegade of the year before (which is again itself a westernised adaptation of a well regarded Japanese series).

"A mean dude fighting gangs" was all the rage at that particular period of video-game history, for some reason. "Double Dragon", "Renegade", "Vigilante", "Final Fight", "Bad Dudes Vs Dragonninja", "Streets of Rage". There was a vogue for that trope in movies at the time, too, which is probably part of it, and it trickled down into the videogames of the time.

I'm not sure if they got better or got worse, to be honest.

Well at least that's actually Street Fighter.

Still rather poor, though.

I had that. The little ninja stars  . Vigilante was also out on the MS, and I had Kung Fu Master on the 2600. I remember thinking it had the best graphics I'd ever seen... it was round about the time when I actually discovered what graphics actually were. Ah.

Here's one to add to the rock solid list, it was ported to the NES: Trojan. Anyone remember it? It was strawberry floating mental-hard.

Edit: In the arcade I was only ever able to get to the end if the third level. On the NES things were a bit different, you could go down the manholes etc.

Edit 2: This is probably a better demonstration of the pain it inflicted, the first vid an infinite life cheat is used. Go to 5 minutes onward if interested:

That's weird. The original Street Fighter game had TWO buttons. The buttons were big rubberised pressure sensitive buttons. The harder you hit them, the harder you hit in the game. Only problem was players would break the machines on a semi-regular basis.

Wikipedia
In the deluxe version of the arcade game, the player's controls consist of a standard eight-way joystick, and two large, unique mechatronic pads for punches and kicks that returned an analog value depending on how hard the player actuated the control. An alternate version was released that replaces the two punching pads with array of six attack buttons, three punch buttons and three kick buttons of different speed and strength (Light, Medium and Heavy).

It's not the first arcade game to be supplied in two versions.

Interestingly, there was a Spectrum port of this underway that never saw the light of day.

Never actually played it, but I think I recall reading about it in Retro Gamer.

you know i was suddenly thinking of a few retro games i loved and remembered shinobi for game gear. After though checking out the
videos for it, shinobi has aged really badly. At the time though it was a great portable game and had some interesting mix up in styles as you could change between the different ninja styles.

Honestly, I never understood what was so great about Shinobi. Even the arcade game didn't look that good.

Well, OK, it actually looks better than I remember.

But I don't know if it's popularity was simply down to the whole "put Ninja in EVERYTHING" mentality of the late 80's/early 90's

It's always kind of reminded me of Rolling Thunder on the Speccy with great fondness though. Hard as nails.

Shinobi was fudging ace. Shame the series has lost its way.

I'm trying to remember a co-op Ninja game on the Amiga. You play as a red ninja and a blue ninja. it was a bit like Dragon Ninja in structure. Any ideas?

I think I've made a huge mistake. I think it was Dragon Ninja and the blue/red ninjas I'm remembering are actually the enemies.
