Ridge 64 is a good conversion; it looks great and, iirc, although not quite as fast as the PS1 version it runs very smoothly. It'll be a nice addition to your N64 collection, Cora!

I've got Banjo 1 and 2 downloaded on my Series S, as I have fancied replaying them for a while now.

Going to start them, and Mario Galaxy, on Christmas week. Galaxy reminds me of Christmas 2007 so that'll be nostalgic, and Kazooie has Freezeey Peak.

Tooie's snow level isn't half as good, though when I last replayed the game back in 2010 or whenever the 360 version game out (and going through for only the second time) it's aged pretty well actually. Levels that were too big and things that were too convoluted in 2001, aren't too bad in the present day. It also doesn't have technical problems from pushing the N64 too hard, which a lot of Rate's later output suffered from.

Remember, the snowy bit is only half of that level, as opposed to being one whole fully realised stage.

Yeah it was a neat idea for a stage and the idea of platforming levels not being self-contained was an idea ahead of its time.

Stuff like the train stations linking the levels was also pretty unique. Made the game feel much larger.

However,, whether it's because I was a little older and 3D platformers more common by 2001, but I don't have nearly as much nostalgia for Tooie's levels compared to Kazooie's. I quite liked the opening two, but was never a fan of Witchyworld and its reliance on minigames (something I didn't like about Tooie and DK64 in general, as I preferred the platforming) and Cloud Cuckooland. The music stuck I my head more than the levels, and I couldn't just play it from memory in my head, like o can with B-K. Maybe it's because I only did the one playthrough before the 360 version came out.

Saying that, I now want to play through Tooie again...

The Evercade seems to be going from strength-to-strength. A "Codemasters Volume 1" collection has been announced and looks terrific. Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder, Super Skidmarks and more!

Evercade is definitely an interesting one and seems to be doing quite well, so I'm not surprised to see "new" stuff coming for it.

My Multiout Famicom arrived today. Works great. Was going to buy a step down converter, but read a Mega Drive (version 1) plug will work perfectly with it, so I'm using that. Just waiting on my Famicom N8 Pro to arrive.

Nice. Is it RGB modded or a stock AV Fami?

You can also buy modern power supplies for these systems now, so you don't need the Step-down convertor.

https://en.retrogamesupply.com/collections/nintendo/products/power-supply-for-nintendo-famicom-av - I've used this site a couple of times and all the power supplies have worked perfectly.

On a Famicom focus myself just now as well.

Sending my Twin off to get RGB modded later in the month and I'm also waiting on the Everdrive N8 Pro coming.

Also got a boxed copy of Gradius coming for it next week.

But I've since found my new favourite thing.

Image

Namco(t) games come in small Famicom cart sized hard cases and they're really cool.

I'm considering finding out how many there are in total for it and collecting them all.

This game specifically is Dragon Slayer IV - Legacy of the Wizard (Just known as Legacy of the Wizard in the west) and it's a pretty sweet little action-platformer with some metroid-esque elements.

It's not RGB molded, no. Well I don't think it is  luckily my Mega Drive plug works with it perfectly fine so I'm able to use that as the plug. I did come with 8 games also. I think most are considered shite, though. Like The Goonies and The Goonies 2.

Connecting up a Wii to a modern TV screen

I bought a Wii2HDMI adaptor - this one - so that I can use my Wii with my new TV. Ideally I'd continue using a component cable but fewer modern TVs cater for these now.

+ It works well; the picture is a lot sharper than I'd imagined although this will defend upon your TV's capabilities
+ I'm running it in 480p mode and my Wii games and N64 Virtual Console games work great with the adapter
- ... but lower-res games (anything below 480i, such as Master System, Mega Drive and SNES Virtual Console games) do not work; the screen goes blank (I've tried 480i and 576i modes, too)

I understand that these lower resolutions don't work well over HDMI with most modern TVs. I'm wondering if a a component-to-HDMI device such as this one would work?

Have any of you retro gaming folks used one of these; or maybe other similar devices?

I think that second adapter would have the same problem as the description seems to suggest anything below 480i is incompatible.

Ah, yeah, true, Ironhide. I'm kinda thinking that the only solution would be some kind of (expensive!) upscaling kit; maybe the type of tech that some of the more hardcore retro gamers here use.

That's won't do you any good in this case Jawa.

Most modern TVs won't even have SCART inputs, though they may still have some form of Composite/Component input.

The Wii HDMI adapter you have is fine for Wii software which runs at 480p or higher, but as you found it can have issues with the older 240p VC systems.

This is because all it is doing is taking that Component signal and converting it to HDMI. It's not altering the resolution at all, it's just turning the signal into something the TV recognises as HDMI. So 480i Component becomes 480i HDMI, 240p Component becomes 240p HDMI etc.

The vast majority of new TV's aren't designed to handle the old 240p or 480i signals that most older systems would output. So when you try to send it one of these lower resolutions it doesn't know how to interpret it and will either just go black, or say it can't find a signal or something similar. That will be what is happening here.

So, in order to use these resolutions (either through Wii VC, or through original hardware) on new TV's you need some form of upscaler.

An upscaler takes that original 240p signal and "Upscales" it to something that the TV can recognise. A common way of doing that is to line-double it, because 2x 240p is 480p and most TVs still recognise 480p, though different upscalers can do different things.

What you have linked to on Amazon there isn't an upscaler, simply another signal convertor. Reading the details on it, it does say that it won't work with anything below 480i anyway, so you would have the same issue in any case

Unforunately you then end up looking at upscalers. Most upscalers are not designed for games systems and will usually introduce some input lag which can make them near unplayable in the worst cases.

Upscalers specifically designed for games aren't especially cheap (OSSC is £144), but they look excellent and know exactly how to properly handle older systems.

EDIT:

Yeah, you would need to go down that road I think.

I wouldn't mind some sort of HDMI converter for my PS2 but I don't know which one to buy.
