I got one of those Flashback Plug n' Play Megadrive Mini things (possibly not its full title) for Christmas. It seems like it's got a fairly good selection of games but I hadn't really spent much time with it bar the odd muck about on Sonic 2 and a couple of other platformers.

I hadn't realised it had Phantasy Star 4 on so started playing that earlier, with the aim to spend a bit longer than an hour or two on it (which unfortunately seems to be the norm when I'm playing something retro...sorry).

I know next to nothing about the series, good one to start with?

Phantast Star IV is probably the best one IMO, it's aged surprisingly well and the storyline is quite enjoyable with a couple of memorable moments.

I remember being at college staying up late to see what they would put on the virtual console like an absolute dork. A disgrace that they are shutting it down.

Just played the virtual console version of Sonic 1. 50hz :dread: after 10 years of emulating the NTSC version this night of virtual console nostalgia is rough.

They really strawberry floated Europe with the virtual console. I'll never feel guilty running my own emulators, I'll pay for their solution when they make a good one.

Sonic 2 on 3DS is 60fps and, well, 3D. It's probably the best version I've played.

My original PAL cart is absolutely fine though. Maybe a CRT makes a difference.

I'll admit sonic 1 feels clunky, I was very surprised how much better that game handled on 3DS.

I think they might have sped up pal sonic 2 for us going by the Wii. Still letterboxed though.

When does it shut down? And how do you back up the games you've downloaded?

End of the month, you can choose to download to SD card. Thankfully the Wii is also easy to mod

Does anyone know: if the games you want to keep are already on your Wii, then will they remain playable on there as long as your console works?

Yeah they will. Someone on Twitter said this will be the first time a major digital storefront has completely shutdown. Nintendo should be getting torn a new one for this. I can't imagine in the grand scheme it costs THAT much to keep running

That's my main bugbear with buying any digital content, you've always got the risk of losing stuff you've paid for if and when the service gets shut down.

Nintendo surely can't be so hard up as to not be able to afford to pay for the servers to run VC, especially annoying after they forced loads of emulation sites to shut down.

Nintendo have been utter dicks in recent years and I kind of hope they crash and burn.

It's just frustrating. While I can understand their reasons for shutting down the store itself, the fact that your account dies with it is unforgivable. Requiring new registrations for new systems with each new console is a cynical, unacceptable approach. It surely must have died now with the consolidated Nintendo account, but it's still a poor show that your purchases on the original Wii store don't show up on the new account.

I had hoped that my Wii U (and Wii) purchases would be available on Switch. It doesn't look like they are going that route, despite clearly having all my buyers history, at least from the Wii U anyway.

It's utterly shite.

Thank the lord for modding eh?

Imagine if they somehow had their consoles be unmoddable. This would be a different story.

Not so much "unmoddable" but in Japan you'll be breaking the law if you do.

It amazes me how the law in Japan is so anti consumer/pro business. It's also illegal to rent games there.

I grabbed a complete copy of Final Fantasy 3 for DS for £2 from a local charity shop. I was pretty suprised to see it, this charity shop basically treats games like toys and sits the next to the tomas the tank engines and stuff.

Had another gaming day with my mates on Saturday.

First up was Mario Party 2. A random dice roll decided we were going to play Space Land.

The game was going along pretty well, going into the last five turns, my friend was winning 2-1-1-1 in stars. I was looking good for the mini-game and coin bonus stars. Then my other friend who was also in contention for coin bonus decided to duel me for 80+ coins meaning the winner would almost certainly get the coin bonus, which I duly won. This is great, I now have 1 star, almost 200 coins with less than 5 turns to go with 1 bonus star in the bank and very likely to win another. And I was very close to Boo, where I planned to steal a star. And then, disaster. My friend who had two stars bought a third, landed on an item space and accidentally got the Bowser Bomb. What this item does is bring Bowser onto the board from the last star space and he steals all coins from any players he passes on his dice roll. Instead of targeting my friend who was right next to him, he decided to go a different way to come and get me and I very quickly went from 200 coins to zero. So whilst I’ve got two of the bonuses, I’ve got no coins meaning I can’t win in a tie, and I have to rely on my friend with 3 stars not getting a fourth or getting the Happening bonus.

Thankfully, as I said, I was close to Boo. I picked myself up, won the next minigame, used Boo to steal coins from my 3-star friend, eventually overhauled his coin lead and he wasn’t able to get another star or the Happening bonus. :datass:

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

That also happened recently with GamesTM and GamesMaster digital magazines through Apple (once downloaded they're locked to your iPad, and back issues are no longer downloadable). So once your iPad breaks, that's it.
