Cheeky Devlin wrote:Got an OG PlayStation off eBay for £5 (+ £4 postage) which came yesterday. Only ever had the PSone myself, so getting the classic grey rectangle is welcome. It's in great condition and appears to be working perfectly.

Only downside to it is that it's one of the later 900x models which don't have the serial port at the back. Means I can't modify it with an SD card loader and I'm stuck with Discs.

On the plus side it means that the drive itself should be in better condition than an older model (In theory, lol).

Ultimately I don't really intend to play too much on it anyway. I'm going to be softmodding my PS2 shortly which will allow me to load games off a Hard Drive, so worst case I can still run the games through that. I can always try and pick up an earlier model PS1 if I need one later.

It also looked surprisingly nice through the composite cable on my CRT. It's a mostly clean image with less of the blurring and interference that you usually see with it.

I'll still be getting a RAD2X for it (And the PS2) at some point, but it's not horrendous as it stands.

Mine is one of the latter models, and yes, the drive functions perfectly. I got it in a bin bag Nationwide were throwing out and RGB seems to work (although I think I'll be modding it for sync over luma instead of composite), so that's kind of miraculous. That means it's also missing S-video and seperate composite L/R stereo outputs, but you can split that out. The sound quality is still fantastic, by the way. I only recently realised the PS4 doesn't play CDs, so I last used it to play some 90s pop while making lego. It's actually a really quick way to get a CD up and running, because the connected consoles have so much other guff in the way, and hard disks to spin up, etc.

Overall, you're probably better off in terms of reliability as I remember my brother's PS1 back in the day did have those outputs and was a nightmare, having to tilt it about 30 degrees to load anything.

Playing composite through a small CRT, composite artefacts are barely noticeable in movement. You notice it more in UI elements and menus etc.

But RGB on my HDTV looks really excellent. Sitting at a reasonable distance, it's about the same as composite on a tiny CRT screen (mine is 9 inch) I definitely recommend finding a cable but much sharper. Vividness is probably down to the set. My cable was just £4 second hand. It has the basic components inside, nothing fancy (no ICs, no Japanese high grade caps) but it just works.

It annoys me a bit that RetroCollect doesn't recognise the XBox 360 as a retro console. I get that it only stopped being relevant in 2013 but some of the games on the console are almost fifteen years old now!

Burnout Legends (platinum version) complete for PSP for £1
Prince of Persia Revelations complete for PSP for £1
Gran Turismo 5 complete for PS3 for 25p
Call of duty 4 complete for PS3 for 25p
and Metal Gear Solid 4 (platinum version) complete for PS3 for 25p

there was some 25p Wii stuff but the discs had been scratched across the floor so bad theyd be useless as anything but coasters luckily the PS3 discs are all clean as anything.

It's always baffled me how discs get so badly scratched, surely you just put the discs from box to console then back again so how do they get so badly damaged?

A lot of folk just don't care for their own property.
Some of the guff people used to try and trade in when I worked in games retail was appalling. Discs scratched to hell, broken boxes, filthy consoles. Even consoles that reeked of weed, I kid you not.

Sadly it was more common than not.

I remember when I worked in gamestation (15 years ago :dread: ) we got a copy of Stubbs the Zombie for xbox. When opening the box and trying to take the disc out to inspect it for scratches etc, when I pulled the disc out I was greeted with what can only be described as vomit I lifted the disc up and the vomit came with it whilst still attached to the box. I looked at the guy trading it in who had clearly used drugs at some point in his life and he stared laughing.

That is strawberry floating vile, man. :dread:

Continuing with my PlayStation theme for now, I got my PS2 FreeMcBoot memory card through yesterday, which is step one on the road to being able to play backup PS1 and PS2 games!

Just need to get myself a PS2 network/hdd adapter and a SATA hard-drive and that future proofs the drives in both my PS1 and PS2, while also allowing me access to NTSC versions of all the PlayStation games I want. :toot:

I can already load games from a USB drive, but the PS2 USB slots are USB 1.0 and slow as hell so there's a lot of potential issues. I managed to get PS1 THPS2 running through it last night, but there were definite issues with textures loading in.

I'm hoping to get the kit I need towards the end of the month, then I can top it off with another RAD2X cable. :toot:

Didn't the PS2 also have a hard drive expansion? Or was that just a modem? Maybe you could retrofit that for IDE which is still faster than USB1.

PS2 did indeed have a hard drive expansion, it only worked with Final Fantasy XI if memory serves.

In which case it would have a parallel port that can be somehow adapted for use with an external hard disk. Probably work checking up on mods. As the underlying system for PS2 was Linux as well I believe.

Yeah you can use a standard SATA/IDE drive with the network adapter which is my plan.

The USB drive was just a wee test until I can get that done.

Got my Rad2x for SNES/N64 /GameCube yesterday. Tested it on N64 so far and it’s a huge improvement! Going to try GC tonight. So good playing the old classics!

When did you order yours?

Christmas Day. You?

Was on the GC last night. Didn’t realise it had RGB out of the box. Looks lovely!

And I just got my shipping confirmation for my RAD2X cable as well. Should be with me in the next few days I think. Which means a lovely, sharp crisp picture from my SNES/SFC/GC (and N64 to a lesser extent) which I can get through to my big 4K TV and capture through my elgato.

Genuinely excited about a cable.

Funnily enough I’m on the verge of buying another 360 - mine keeps getting disc read errors and it’s all very frustrating.

A 360 is one of the few gaps in my console collection (Mainstream systems anyway).

I'll probably rectify that soon I think.
