I went on a carboot today and got a whole bunch of things.

For 1quid I got a small ds case with a loose mystery stories ds cart in it and 4 loose psp games been 10 alien force, ridge racer 2, after burner black falcon and monster Hunter portable 2g.

I got a loose Gameboy cart of sensible soccer European championship for 2quid

WWF Attitude loose cart for N64 for 1quid

For 5quid I got a TwoDS (a day piracy type cart that can do gba and D's games) with a 8gig sd card in it, a 512mb psp memory card, nhl96 for megadrive boxed no manual and a whole bunch of Mac os installation discs which might help with an old project I never finished.

For 2quid I got a loco roco demo disc for psp in it's packaging.

Not a car boot but I was in Dundee today so popped into CEX as I do from time to time. Got Jade Empire, Oddworld: Strangers Wrath and Outrun 2 for Xbox for about £13. Not bad. Only really got a handful of Xbox games left that I want now.

Made a modification to my original NES last weekend, installed something called the 'Blinking Light Win' to replace the original 72 Pin Connector and Tray. Unlike buying a cheap chinese 72 pin-connector it seems like this not only offers a permanent solution but also won't damage the cartridges by being too tight (Although it still does grip them very tightly I find). Was pretty easy to install too, just a matter of unscrewing and removing the main board/rf shield, disconnecting the old connector from the board and replacing it with the new one.

Cosmetically the NES looks exactly the same from the outside but when you insert a cartridge you no longer need to push down. So far every game I've tried has booted first time, no blinking lights just straight to the game. I have had to clean the occasional cartridge which hasn't given a clear picture when booting but at least I've known that the problem is a dirty cartridge, not the connector. It's from a company called Arcade Works and unfortunately they only seem to sell from America so it had some fairly hefty postage charges, came to £45 but about 1/3 of that was postage, still worth it to be able to actually use my NES when I want to instead of having to mess around for ages. If you have an original NES which you still use then I'd definitely recommend doing it.

Also don't leave cartridges in, some people say that yes this prevents dust build up on the pins but it also stretches them. Following that practice seems to have helped me as well. I only have 3 NES carts so far, I must get more!

Another simple solution is to cut a single trace which disables the check for 100% pin conductivity, as very few games actually use all the pins and will run fine anyway, which has the handy bonus of disabling the security chip for running NTSC games as well, although there might be speed issues.

Also can anyone recommend some good 2 player NES games, I have snake rattle n roll but not really using my second controller at all.

I went in Game yesterday and they'd marked the two retron HD Nes consoles they had in stock down from 59.99 to 19.99 each so I purchased both of them figured I'd use one of them to play my NES carts from now on and not risk the actual console, surprised to find there are things I prefer about the cadet pad you get with it over the original NES pad.

That's good, my NES was a car boot bargain from years back (£5 boxed with two games, two controllers and a zapper ) and although it is cosmetically great on the outside (no real yellowing or marks) it seems like it was pretty well used as the connector has always been poor. I tried the trick of boiling the 72-pin connector a number of years back but it only fixed it briefly. I've only really tried the rubbing alcohol method on cleaning games but had some success, also picked up the 1Up Card for cleaning cartridges which works really well. It's a credit card shaped cleaner that is designed specifically for cleaning cartridge pins, they suggest you exclusively use their contact cleaner but I've had no issues using isopropyl rubbing alcohol and used it on carts across all my systems to good effect.

I'd heard about the single trace cutting and had contemplated it but didn't want to do any damage, the blinking light win actually has the same effect of making the NES region free which is handy but trace cutting is definitely cheaper. My NES is pretty heavily modded at this point as I also got the RGB mod done a few years back so that my NES would work through the OSSC. Again, it's a mod I'd highly recommend as it hugely improves the quality of the NES output but it's not particularly cheap.

In terms of two player NES games I don't have many but I'd definitely recommend the original Bubble Bobble if you don't already have it, River City Ransom is supposed to be brilliant too for multiplayer but I've not got that one as it's a bit pricey!

I'm sorry to hear that you were in Dundee, but that's a pretty good haul.

I find the CEX experience to be quite a good one, the only problem is that they now know exactly what a retro game is worth and price accordingly, so it's tough to find bargains. With that said, they're always worth a punt and there are four within a half hour drive of my house(Glasgow Central, Glasgow Sauchiehall St, Paisley[*shudders*] and Clydebank). Cycling through them for bargains isn't the worst way to spend an hour or two.

I went to the charity shop my daughter used to work at today and one of the managers stopped me and said they had something to offer me, it was 3 boxed complete NES games for 2pound each. I brought them and I am very happy with them they are Mission Impossible, Isolated Warrior and Gauntlet 2. Awesome day especially as I can play them on my new retron HD.

Bloody hell!, been pricing up my Megadrive games and some of the prices they've gone for on Ebay are insane.

Even relatively common games are going for £30+ in good condition (which around 90% of mine are), I guess stuff like the Retron and MegaSG have increased the demand for physical cartridges.

It's a little bit to do with the orange peel laminates coming off, and the hanging tags snapping. And manuals. Manuals make a huge difference to price.

Some of these games are just so playable - there's a few terrible arcade ports for sure (Super Thunder Blade), but some run at 30-60fps still thanks to the MD's faster CPU. And the shmup library is really good.

I think it's kind of a given that NES/SNES/N64 games will be in pretty rough condition overall, so there's less likelihood of seeing a good copy that attracts higher bids. on the other hand, it's relatively easy to keep an MD game good on a shelf, or in an attic - although a lot suffer from wobbly cover art inserts from trapped moisture. At least that doesn't happen to card games - they just warp a bit instead (or at worse go mouldy).

So yeah the games that people do want are in generally better knick and so by default I think the prices are a bit higher. Maybe they're more likely to have manuals as well because there was a space/clip for them whereas people would throw away SNES box stuff.

I've got just 6 or 7 boxed MD games in fair to very decent knick (got a particularly good copy of Dynamite Heady and really good Streets of Rage) and some carts. They're lovely to have and they sit on a shelf so nicely, if you don't go mad with it. Nothing beats slamming a cart into a console, hitting THAT slidey switch, hit start twice as most and BAM instant game time

The Mega Drive is just an ace console; a great game library that is pretty varied and packed with classics. I haven't delved into buying games these past few years as the pricing has gotten pretty steep. I'm glad that I got stuff like Out Run and Mega Turrican eight or nine years back rather than looking to pick it up now .

Thankfully my local indie matches or beats even some online prices. Sure the condition isn't always perfect.. but walking away with a new cart reminds me of the 90s! It's just so nice having a game you can immediately dive into and, most of all, even if you have just 5 minutes to beat a single level.

The timeless music and satisfying action, skill required to progress etc, makes every inch of progress much more satisfying than most modern games.

I was totally over the moon reaching level 7 on Thunder Force IV recently. I'd never even seen it (or knew it existed) because I had never looked at screenshots or longplays. Paid £11 for the cart and totally worth it.

Wasn't sure where to post this so I'm putting it here.
I've been working on a big project recently where I will be posting 3 videos a day talking about video games from the 80s, 90s and 00s.
This project took a long time and while I have a good deal of content stockpiled, this is an ongoing thing that I will be working on for a while.
I'm still very much an amateur when it comes to video content but I'll be looking to try and improve as time goes on.
I will be spreading the videos throughout the day, posting them Monday to Friday. That is 15 videos a week. 15 minutes of content a week.
I'm not going to ask for follows or anything but any views and feedback would be appreciated.
