Well I was able to tune the Famicom in on my TV so I've at least been able to confirm that it works. Picture is horrendous though and I can't get any sound. Apparently this is due to the frequencies used by the video and audio technically being on different channels so you can probably get one or the other but not both.

Still, managed to get a wee shot of all my games which was great.
Definitely need to get my RGB mod done sooner rather than later I think.

I got a perfect picture but not great sound, like you said though the main thing is knowing these things work and that you haven't paid for novelty paperweights. I'm finding looking at the games online addictive sure some titles are expensive but there's lots of decent things at sub £5 prices.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that people add longer cables to there controllers though, having not touched a famicom in 20 years I forgot how truly short the wires are.

I saw someone modded 8bitDo retro receivers into theirs along with their Famicom style wireless controllers. Looked pretty sweet. But yeah the short cables are ridiculous.

In terms of games I've got most of what I want, but there are a few I want to pick up. All the Rockman games (I've got the second one already) and Tetris are my main targets and they seem fairly reasonably priced.
Down the line I'll be looking at a Disk System and that's when I'll be going for Metroid, TLOZ, Castlevania, SMB2. They can cost a little more, but I want some of the key games. Beyond that it'll be an everdrive for all the other games I want to play.

I don't think I'd ever get a disk system as I tend to stick to things I had or wanted as a kid, I'd seen famicoms in a local computer shop but never saw the discs till I was an adult. When I decided on the famicom it was between a famicom a turbo graphics or a neo aes. I owned a neo aes when I was 16 but sold it and regret it, looking at the outlay for a neo and a game I was like wowsers it's a small fortune lol, I already own a neo mvs innards so maybe I'll just get the stuff to plug that up to a TV at some point as I have the innards to a one slot and about 8 mvs carts.Also the other half told me she's already paid for me to get a turbo graphics/PC engine mini on release so Famicom seemed like the right choice

There's a guy in the States with a 9.4 graded, unopened copy of the first print run of Super Mario Bros. on the NES that's worth about $1m. Daft bastard tried to sell it to Pawn Stars didn't he.

I used to enjoy coding in BASIC... man, this has brought back memories I'd kinda forgotten about!

My initial impressions of the system:

+ Decent build quality
+ Image quality on modern screens is excellent
+ The game select carousel is nice and includes Boulder Dash
+ You can even code in BASIC
- The joystick is clunky; it's micro-switched and should last, but it feels clunky after using modern joypads for about thirty years
- It may be my ears but music seems to run slightly fast; will check out the settings for this

I'm looking forward to exploring how other games can be uploaded to it .

Yeah, a bit more play and the joystick does seem okay; full micro-switched movement but quite loud! It is good but takes time to get used to when you're more familiar with a pad in recent years. Apparently other USB pads/joyticks can be used so I might explore that.

The actual computer is great. You can use save states so I've saved my coding .

The full user manual is available online - click here - and I'm looking over it now.

Now.. I'm sure I have a spare USB stick somewhere... bring on the games!

I got a bundle of 11 Famicom carts for £20 the contents of which ill list below.

Yie Ar Kung Fu
Twin Bee (damaged label)
Dragon Quest 2
Gegege No Kitaro
Then two carts with almost none existant labels which I believe are 1942 and Donkey kong junior

I'm also intrigued by your thoughts about condition; from your descriptions it seems that you are happy to take on all levels of gear? Maybe you look to replace items with slightly better condition ones as you find 'em?

I basically figure condition in to the price and yeah if I see a better version for cheap im going to replace what I have got, I tend to keep it all most of the time with a few exceptions. I did for example take a coworker under my wing so to speak a few years ago. He was about 10 years younger than me and has aspergers and work asked me to work with him and help him to fit in, it started with me just helping him with work and then he mentioned being into retro games and wanting to get a collection up and going, I sorted him out a spare megadrive I had and a few loose duplicate carts and started showing him where to lookfor stuff, ive also given a few peoplew ps1's etc, im very much into getting people into retro gaming and getting them to appreciate the history of console and computer companies.

Growing up I had a tight group of friends and we traded games and such but most of them became pot heads and one of them was murderd so I guess the above helping people is a way of getting back little bits of what I used to have.

My famiclone arrived today it's the same type Devlin orderd , I'm very tempted to paint it to make it look a bit less megadrive like, it's going to make playing the games a lot easier.

That's really nice to hear and thanks for helping. The equality act or access to work or autistic society would say and recommend that they have a mentor or "work buddy" because they won't automatically make friends and ask questions and ask for help when needed and can just wind up losing their job because they're deemed incompetent or "lack initiative" when actually they just need to ask for help and band together like everyone else. So it sounds like they did that and hopefully he stayed in work longer, it is very rare that you actually hear of that happening because normally it is just ignored and no extra help is considered necessary.
