Ocarina! The legendary Ocarina! It arrived on the 3DS back in 2011 and enabled the classic N64 title to be enjoyed all over again.
However, you may not have known about the box variations that exist. Let me talk through these below... and please do shout if you're aware of any others that are available!
^^^ The story begins back in the spring of 2011 when Nintendo provided GAME (here in the UK) with some special pre-order cases to be given to customers who pre-ordered the game. The case was a sealed, standard 3DS case that contained gold artwork and a small foldout poster. It was pretty popular as the artwork was lovely and it presented a neat collectible item.
^^^ The reverse of the case contained some screenshots and "not to be sold separately" text. Note that no age rating is shown.
^^^ In this shot we can see the fold-up poster that was sealed within the pre-order case.
^^^ On June 11 2011 the game launched and arrived in the standard, colourful artwork case that most folk will be familiar with. The cover includes a "12" age rating.
^^^ The rear of the case contained different screenshots and layout to that of the pre-order variant.
^^^ The idea was that purchasers could place their cart into the pre-ordered gold case if they wanted to; creating a sought-after version.
^^^ The standard version shows plain white inside the case...
^^^ ...but the pre-order case contains secret coloured rupees that shine through!
^^^ That's not the end of the story, though! There is another variant; one that could only be obtained by purchasing the lovely special edition Zelda 25th Anniversary 3DS console that Nintendo released. "It looks the same, jawa!" I hear you exclaim. But... look closely. A "12" age rating is printed on the cover of this gold version
^^^ ...and, looking at the back, the screens and layout match that of the standard edition rather than the earlier pre-order version. It's still not quite the same even as the standard version, though; note the gold colour background rather than the standard version's light brown background. There is a "not to be sold separately sticker" but this is different to the text printed on the back of the pre-order case. I also believe that this version is plain white on the inside of the case rather than showing the colourful rupees as with the pre-order case. I haven't opened it to confirm, though!
^^^ In this shot we have the reverse of the pre-order gold case (left) and the reverse of the Zelda 3DS console gold pack-in version.
^^^ Here's all four versions of the case; clockwise from top-left we have the standard retail case, the pre-order case, the Zelda 3DS console version case and the pre-order case (opened).
^^^ ...and here we can see the reverse of the cases!
^^^ Wow! What a journey through the story of a game case. I feel sure that many folk will be very sleepy now... but hopefully a few collectors will have enjoyed this walk.
And... "jawa! That's not the full story!" I hear you cry. Of course, Nintendo has also released a "Nintendo Selects" (red border) version of the game for 3DS. I don't have a copy of that version ( I think I probably have enough at this point...) but I believe it is the same as the standard release in having a plain white interior.
Lets continue to enjoy Ocarina! And maybe I'll stop looking at the cases and exit Hyrule Field at some point, of course.
