It's not a first playthrough for Banjo although it's probably only my second playthrough. I've never played Tooie so I might give that a go next. Nor Conker's. It's a shame they both came out quite late. I played to about halfway through of DK64 last year so I don't know that I can be bothered to start it all again for a while yet.
I've also just remembered I've not played Jet Force Gemini! These other games might not be as good as those above but that's an amazing output[/quote]
You should absolutely give Tooie a shot, but play the Xbox version if you can.

I really didn't get on with tooie, the levels were too big and didn't feel thst fun to explore. I think I dropped it at some fun fair thing.

Saw Earfolds playing a Banjo-Kazooie/Ocarina of Time hack yesterday which looked great fun

I think I stopped in the same place

Levels were too big, and had too much locked content you had to return to with later moves

I too gave up on Tooie 2 or 3 levels in because I also found the levels to big.

Completely valid criticism; Tooie’s main problem is backtracking and the levels being overly large because there isn’t enough to do in them to justify them being the size that they are.

I'd agree with that but it's another one of those games where, when it clicked for me, was absolutely excellent.

Tooie was the creation of a time where the industry and press valued quantity over almost everything else. Lorne Lanning said as much about Oddworld. European journalists would question him about the narrative subtext while American journalists followed a checklist “how many levels? Are there secrets?“ etc.
Tooie got rave reviews because it met the criteria of being “bigger and better” but 20 years later we see with Kazooie that less is more when designed tightly.

I thought Yooka Laylee suffered similar problems, huge levels with a checklist of very repetitive objectives. I would have preferred smaller levels with more variety in the goals.

This is still an issue in my opinion, although perhaps not as severe.

I've always said people wanted Yooka Laylee to be a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie, but got a spiritual successor to Banjo-Tooie instead

Banjo Kazooie :datass:

Tooie was okay, but I gave up as well (final boss). Was a real slog at times, and I definitely kept playing beyond the point when it was still fun, almost out of a sense of obligation because I was close to the end. Then I got to the final boss, and it was one of those where there's loads of different forms of the boss, or different 'stages' within the boss (can't remember the exact details) and it just felt like another unenjoyable slog. I think I just hate bosses in general now, they're almost always awful.

Sometimes think about the alternate timeline where Nintendo bought Rare and had them as a second-party developer. Could have been glorious.

I wish I could control Jetforce Gemini these days, It's a nightmare with both control methods on Rare Replay. The X axis is wrong on both.

I got halfway through Tooie and I just stopped playing it. It really is an inferior sequel.

It took me a while but it's OK when you get the hang of it.

The issue with it on Rare Replay is that you don't get any of the damn achievements until right at the end of the game, then they all pop!

I'm kind of tempted to get an Xbox just for Rare replay. Think I read something that there's more N64 games available on Xbox than there are on Switch

I’m trying to think. There are seven or eight on RR, and I think you can get Turok 2 somewhere. Not sure what else there is.

I picked up the parts to make myself a MiSTer the other day and while I'm still getting it all setup so far it's brilliant. I've been using the NeoGeo core a lot and also checking out the GBA core vs GBA player on a GameCube on a big screen. If I had a capture device I'd make a video for your viewing...pleasure?

I think I'm going to build it into a 2 player bartop arcade machine and have a bunch of controllers stored in it.
