PostGenshin Impact: Update 2.0 Inazuma Region, Open World JRPG on consoles inspired by Breath of the Wild.

I've been on it for about an hour now, and for me personally it has fixed (nearly) all the gripes I have ever had about JRPG's.

The game is not an MMO, it is a single player JRPG with online co-op elements where you build your team.

The game is supposedly inspired by Breath of the Wild regarding the variety of traversal and exploration, discovering dungeons and bosses.

The movement feels weighty, you don't just glide fast and effortlessly across the ground. You can swim, fly and climb nearly all terrain.

The voices, as usual in this sort of genre, are well done but a little much sometimes :slol:

The production values here feel huge. Base PS4 is a little rough so far but not terrible by any means.

It has a stamina system similar to Shadow of the Colossus when you are climbing terrain. I did a nice dive into a waterfall river, swam around catching fish then tried to climb up to safety. I had ran out of stamina and fell from my climb and drowned. :fp:

If you are a fan of JRPG's, this is certainly worth a look. I'm looking forward to spending the day on this!

Update 21/07/21:

The largest update for the game is out NOW, a whole new Japan inspired region called Inazuma.

Most important is the rumour that the single most OP 5 star character in the game Ganyu will be returning In September.

Ganyu:

How do the free-to-play aspects impact this game? It looks jolly good but that’s always a concern. (Not out on Switch yet if I recall correctly.)

From what I understand, there are several team members you gain playing through the game, but there are a lot hidden behind a slot system, with each character having variants up to 5*, this includes weapons as well.

The higher star characters you roll, the more skills and abilities they have and the more powerful weapon variants you have.

It seems you can upgrade your weapons for more damage using materials in the game but I guess the idea is to use your tickets/currency to slot machine a higher star weapon /character with better abilities.

I haven't got to that aspect yet, surprisingly it is not shoved in your face immediately and I'm about an hour in!

Come to think of it, I've just unlocked an archer character and the game is really reminding me of an anime Dragons Dogma.

I'm very impressed with a lot of the small details here.

The ducks on the lake and animals running around the forest

The animations from diving, to recovery animations when you are hit are very high quality.

Climbing trees to pick fruit.

Setting fire to the grass/your clothes when using fire spells/arrows.

The music is really fantastic too! However I have turned down the voice volume a bit.

It's a videogame made in China, so imo it's not great to describe it as "weeb", which refers specifically to westerners who like Japanese things too much.

Exactly all of this reads like Breath of the Wild. However there are many worse things to play than a polished F2P BotW knock-off that doesn’t shove its F2P side down your throat. Very tempting.

Of course there’s a high chance it’ll play and run like shite on Switch. :dread:

Tbh I only know the term from here as it's my only exposure to that sort of thing. I assumed it was a light derogatory term for liking cutesy squeeky voice cartoon stuff.

Sure, fair enough! Wasn't having a go, just letting you know. (I actually quite like the term "squeaky" for describing that style of character design. )

Seen a bunch of people excited for this, but it apparently has kernel-level anti-cheat that remains active if the game is off. So you might want to look into that if you're thinking of picking it up.

Yikes! I wouldn't install this on PC, then. I'm interested but I'll wait for the Switch version.

I'm basing that on this tweet/reddit post about how to turn it off. I'm not entirely versed in the specifics, but just a heads up.

A lot of heated love/hate discussions about the FTP system here, it seems very divisive.

Interested to see how it works myself, but in far too busy climbing everything in the first city. City walls, buildings, statues, castles...

Between here and the memes the kids on the Twitter post these days, I'm increasingly feeling like this:

I'll try it on PS4 as the gf has gotten into breath of the wild but I'm not too fussed about Zelda.

Yeah, my worry is more that it doesn't look like they are using an established anti-cheat system. Games like Valorant use kernel-level anti-cheat too, it's not "inherently bad", but you want the code to be well-vetted and to only run when necessary or it opens up a big potential hole in your system.

I imagine there will be a lot of investigations on Reddit etc. into what this anti-cheat is actually doing, so I'd at least wait a few weeks before installing it on PC. Should be fine on consoles obviously. Again, it's a shame as I was actually planning on playing this right away, I think it looks really cool.

Today I learned about kernel-level anti-cheat. :|
