I wonder how long this is going to go on for, some trials takes months.

It'll be interesting to see how they try to defend the absolutely indefensible.

Well this is America we're talking about, so I'm fully expecting him to walk free.

That or something like three months’ jail time.

How many police officers do you reckon have been convicted over a death in police custody in the UK recently?

I don't believe I said anywhere in my post that the UK is any better? Commenting on American policing or their legal system is not automatically also comparing it to ours.

Bare in mind to form the jury they'll have had to find 12 people who have (at least claimed to) formed absolutely no opinion of this case. I'm expecting a not guilty verdict.

Watching it again, I don't understand what they were waiting for when they restrained him for so long? Were they waiting for back up (I counted 4 cops by the end of the video) or the ambulance? If they were waiting for the ambulance, I guess it could be key when the call was made.

They were waiting for him to die.

Moreover, why does a man who is face down on the ground with handcuffs on need a knee on any part of his body?

Another concern I have, is this is the state prosecuting a state official and by connection, an instrument of state. How do they ensure the prosecution is entirely divorced from the interests of the state and perform the best in terms of ensuring prosecution as far as possible?

Say this was the UK, we would have the CPS (who for all intents and purposes work with the police) prosecuting an officer. How do they ensure no conflict of interest for the prosecution.

Yes I just can't, on any basis, understand why he needed restraining for that amount of time. I think that will be a key issue, as will when in the time frame the ambulance was called. The defence will likely say he was having health issues before being put on the ground, but how you square that with a knee on the neck is going to be one of the most ridiculous defence aspects of our time.

"Your honour, you see I thought the man was dying so I immediately put him on the ground and restricted his breathing until an ambulance arrived".

It's a crass way of putting it, but that is how the defence are going to try and sell it.

I've had to stop and start this as I've been on work calls, but just the opening statement from the prosecutor guy seems like they have an overwhelming amount of evidence against the accused.

It's really hard not to laugh when the defence are going down the "reason and common sense" route.

It's obviously comparing America to at least somewhere else!

Watching the video in full, I didn't remember Chauvin reaching for his strawberry floating mace because the public were pleading with him to stop murdering a man.

The public response if (when?) this copper gets away with it will make the Rodney King riots look like a mild scuffle.

We're taking a minimum-force approach. We're cops, after all.
