What did I buy that was 9.99? I have the PS5 version of the game.

I assume you bought the same thing after owning both the PS4 game *and* the expansion?

No idea

The $9.99 is the PS4 to PS4 directors cut upgrade. The $29.99 is PS4 to PS5 directors cut upgrade.

I just had a notification that the Directors cut upgrade has now gone on sale finally. Only 25% off but still something.

I hope to make a start on this soon (having owned it since xmas), but after making a bit more incremental progress in Returnal last night I think that it may be a little bit longer.

I want to play this but haven't got enough time and these weak Nintendian level discounts are still not enough to tempt me into an impulse purchase!

I want to get this but I burned myself out with the main story, so happy to wait a little longer for a better discount.

Really enjoying this. Great use of the DualSense haptics and speaker. Biggest / only issue I have had is finding the right difficulty level for me. I seem to swap between "hard" and "Lethal" all the time. The former still seems a bit easy though, whilst the latter can get frustrating in the bigger encampments and the duals.

Like the shrines a lot. Simple, but often beautiful and fun to navigate.

Also, load times are.... non existent. Fast travel has never been so appealing.

I think I have taken 25 photos so far. The PS5 auto upload arrived at just the right time.

Yeah, the fast travel is *stupidly* fast. I have no idea how they did it.

If you want to really let your SSD show off, boot any other game then resume the quest you were on by picking it from the activity cards.

I will be sure to give that a try! I always forget about activity cards.

In to act 3 now. It keeps on going doesn't it?

Playing on Lethal mode, but there still is very little challenge. Beautiful game and good story, but it feels way too long in a way that I never thought TLOU2, Horizon Zero Dawn and, more recently, Days Gone did.

Not sure I have the fortitude to play the DLC, though I understand it does mix up the mechanics a bit, which would be very welcome.

Agreed; I enjoyed it but it's a bit too sprawling and fatigue set in for me at end of Act 1. Will prob get the DLC at end of year / start of next. Hopefully it should have a decent price drop by then!

The story and the beautiful world were the only thing that kept me going in this... game becomes far too easy far too quickly

Started this tonight, so far it's ... pretty decent I guess? For some reason I was expecting/hoping that this would be something more than just another by the numbers open world game but so far it seems to be sticking very close to the standard template. Graphics are lovely on PS5 though and I'm enjoying the setting and story so far.

It is absolutely a by the numbers open world game, but it does look lovely. I enjoyed my 67 hours with it immensely, but it could easily have been a third of the length and it would have lost nothing.

Yeah I've heard that it kind of outstays its welcome.

I'll be happy enough if it's "just" another competent open world game, but it feels like there was scope for it to be more than that which is a shame. Still early days of course, it might turn out to be strawberry floating amazing yet for all I know!

I feel the overall quality of it - being just engaging enough at each of the core aspects (combat / duals / traversal) and the ridiculous amount of polish elevated it above most of it contemporaries, but going back to GoW 2018 immediately afterwards highlighted just how short it falls of a top quality Sony game.

The Iki Island stuff was the best stuff in the game for me, in no small part because it did everything in a much denser environment with some new mechanics to mix things up a touch.

I think it's a game where YMMV. I loved it because I'm interested in Japanese hostory, I enjoyed the story and it's honestly a gorgeous looking game. I think because I jumped ship years ago with massive open world games I didn't feel the "more of the same" some people experienced. I'm currently on my third run-through of the game.

It is beautiful, yet a couple of things bug me about the presentation of this:

It seems to switch between 60fps for gameplay and 30 (or maybe 24?) for cut scenes which in assuming is to try and ape a movie feel? It's not working for me.

Something is off about the camera angle/FOV being used in general gameplay - it's too low and the perception of what is right in front of the player character feels limited/blocked by the player model in a way I don't think I've experienced in a third person game for years.

The animations are quite uneven in quality - some stuff looks lovely but other things like general movement (especially whilst crouched) seem quite mechanical and lacking the shifting of weight and momentum to properly convey human motion. When what you're going to be spending a lot of time looking at is this guy moving around you'd think they'd have nailed this! Similarly some of the facial animations are fantastic, there are times where there has been no dialogue but it's clear what someone is thinking/feeling from the subtle expression they give, but other times it looks really stilted and not in sync with the actual dialogue!
