Played half a dozen hours. It's not quite what I was expecting. For one it's very gamey, lots of things to collect, upgrade, arrows pointing you everywhere, flashing items in overworked. There's also very little temporal consistency in the world, it seems to flit between sun, showers, night, fog, clear skies at complete random. strawberry float knows what day I'm supposed to be on, I thought it was going to track stuff like that. Very early on as well but the landscape is quite samey and jerks between colour pallets on a whim. Nothing feels very cohesive.

It's pretty accessible and fun to play around though. Combat is really good and the climbing puzzles are cool as are the little overworked challenges. I like the individual story elements two and the idea they all build together.

I'm not sure how it rates to other open world stuff, I'd say more enjoyable than the motorbike one (name currently escapes me) at this point but maybe not quite as good as Red Dead (though that fell off a cliff at the end for me). I am slightly disappointed it's not more realistic and survivalist as that's sort of what I was expecting from the pre release chatter but I can't really argue with how playable it is and easy to just skip from objective to objective.

i agree with most of what you say but there arent arrows pointing you everywhere are there? i mean thats what ive really liked is theres not a 'next objective!' arrow all over the place, unless you use the wind gesture on the touchpad you can just wander about which is nice.

Not sure what you mean with arrows pointing you everywhere unless you're talking about the wind guiding, which you can choose use or not. As for weather, my experience has been pretty natural so far. It only changes at random during events, which is what you must be seeing and feeling a bit jarred over. Also there's a visual reason with how the landscape is constructed which you'll start seeing when you take on more Tales later on. It's very BotW like in that nature where the game guides you with sights and sounds which I think is pretty neat.

So far I have not found it BotW like even remotely so I’d be very pleasantly surprised if it turns in that direction. I think I mis-spoke with the arrows comment. I was trying to get at when you’re in a settlement, particularly on a mission and things are constantly popping up on screen to make sure you’re going right to the objective, particularly when investigating a scene.

Unless you're only focusing on story and not exploring then I can see why the game feels like it does for you. Also like you said you're still super early so I'd be interested to hear your thoughts when you've taken the game in more. My BotW comparison only applies to how the game presents itself and less on how the game plays. I'm probably 25+ hours in and finally getting to doing the main story stuff because I've just been so distracted by everything else.

Absolutely loving this. Probably put in about 15-20 hours so far. Loving the presentation and the world which really evokes the setting and location. Been spending a lot of time exploring but am making some progress with the story too. I can see the comparisons with Assassins Creed and Red Dead and wouldn't say it does much that's especially original, but it's just so polished that I would struggle to score less than a 9 at the moment. Probably up with Spiderman as the best new PS4 IP of this gen for me, ahead of the likes of Horizon and Days Gone (both of which I also enjoyed).

Once I'm more beefed up I might try out that mode lol. Speaking of, I really need to start using my dang skill points. I'm currently sitting on 18 of them somehow ">,> It's a bad habit lol.

Really quite enjoying this. It's a bit repetitive but it just feels very nice to be and play in this world. It is quite easy but I guess I'm still easy. Only slight negative so far is that I don't really feel like I'm at war. It's something open world free form stuff just isn't great at capturing and this certainly isn't doing a terrible job, but as the lead figure on the Japanese side I hoped for things to feel a bit more urgent. That E3 2018 gameplay section almost made it seem like you would be commanding forces at the front. I've always wanted a game to feel like some of those Lord of the Rings battles but this isn't that.

Yeah  Some people seem confused about the protagonist isn't handsome bit, but to me it's clear he means Japanese market research would have demanded someone prettier looking for the role of Jin.

Not sure weather to "clear" the first island before advancing the story, any advice on this?

You don't get locked out of anything on the first location when you move to the second.
