Are Disney falling foul of being too woke? I’ve seen a ton of YouTube vids about how Rey ruined Star Wars (boycott Episode IX, anyone?), and now Captain Marvel is apparently expected to open at about $100million less since Brie Larson went all SJW. So, are Disney doing a Gillette, or is it totally different?

It’s more like basement dwelling subhumans crying because a movie stars a girl or two.

Youtube has a big far right subculture. This is kind of inevitable when you have a platform where any idiot can vomit their views into a camera without having to deal with engaging in a dialogue. It's not really a bar with which you can measure opinion.

The outrage that normally occurs after x advert just reminds me just how effective advertising is at going way over everyone's heads in what it aims to achieve.

1) Get people who agree with you to agree with you more and buy your thing

2) Get people who disagree with you to disagree with your customers and encourage them to buy your thing because of (1)

3) Get people who don't give a gooseberry fool to talk and whinge about it thus exposing the brand to potential 1s or 2s

Result.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

If you count 'casting women in leading roles' as being 'too woke' then they sure are.

And in what way is Brie Larson an.... ugh... SJW?

Well you can make any statement you want if you add an ? to the end.

Yep, it's a win-win situation and those disagreeing and/or whingeing don't even realise that they are being played.

On point (2) here I'm about to become an example of this as I'm now intending to see Captain Marvel at the cinema where I would have previously waited for it to come out on disc/streaming - just to confound the morons who are stirring up gooseberry fool around the movie.

Well, in line with her character being Marvel’s only female hero to get their own movie, Brie has expressed several feminist and anti-racist sentiments, such as the movie not being principally for the typical white, male audience. For a further example, she insisted on being interviewed by a black, female, disabled writer.

In any case, I was referring not so much to the disgruntled white males (who seemed unable to influence the success of Black Panther), but more to the fact that projections for Captain Marvel had resultantly ‘tanked’ by 100 million dollars - did Brie expressing her views really have that effect? Do movie profit projections matter?

If you're only anti-racist on very rare, infrequent occasions then you can be let off, but don't go making a habit out of it! :capnscotty:

Is Captain Marvel actually out yet? It doesn’t come out here (China, currently the place where most of these movies make the lions share of their revenue) til Friday, so forgive me if I take claims that the movie has tanked (just like Black Panther and Last Jedi and other movies with ‘SJW’ themes were predicted to before they smashed records and embarrassed tiny little white boys everywhere) with a pinch of salt.

Second, my understanding is that she calls for greater diversity in journalism. (I know, I know, the horror). But if she did demand to only be interviewed by ‘a black, female, disabled writer’ (CITATION VERY MUCH strawberry floating NEEDED), then ok? And? I believe she’s a figurehead for an organisation that calls for equality in the performing arts, are you angry she’s standing by her principles and using her position of influence to see the change she wants happen?

She has expressed several ‘feminist and anti-racist views’.

Good.

That’s a good thing.

It’s not a movie for ‘typical white male audiences’.

Neither was Black Panther. It was a strawberry floating cracking film and killed it at the box office.

Whiney crybabies who whinge about this gooseberry fool rarely actually vote with their wallets, and if they miss out on the film; good. strawberry float ‘em. For every one of them who stay home, there’s ten who respond to seeing something different to ‘Handsome straight white man saves world in costume’ by thinking ‘oh I might actually see that’.

She did - although more she used her 'star power' to pick her interviewer, and she picked a minority, not quite the provocative way whomever mic's parroting said

https://www.celebitchy.com/609798/brie_ ... interview/

Anyway, Brie looks totally ‘90s on the cover of the March issue of Marie Claire UK. That’s what made me think of it – this cover could have come out in 1997. For her profile, Brie hand-selected her interviewer: Keah Brown, a freelance journalist, a woman of color and someone with cerebral palsy. Brie and Keah talked about why Brie wanted someone other than a white male interviewing her. You can read the full Marie Claire piece here. Some highlights:

Why Brie requested a disabled, female journalist: ‘About a year ago, I started paying attention to what my press days looked like and the critics reviewing movies, and noticed
it appeared to be overwhelmingly white male. So, I spoke to
Dr Stacy Smith at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, who put together a study to confirm that. Moving forward, I decided to make sure my press days were more inclusive. After speaking with you, the film critic Valerie Complex and a few other women of colour, it sounded like across the board they weren’t getting the same opportunities as others. When I talked to the facilities that weren’t providing it, they all had different excuses.’

Why she wants to give women like Keah more visibility: ‘I want to go out of my way to connect the dots. It just took me using the power that I’ve been given now as Captain Marvel. [The role] comes with all these privileges and powers that make me feel uncomfortable because I don’t really need them.’

On female superheroes: ‘It’s just the beginning. Captain Marvel will not be the answer to all of these things. It’s about breaking it open to say, “Here’s another way; here’s something to look at to then continue the conversation further.” For me, just the act of accepting the role and the process of getting physically strong [Larson worked out for four and a half hours every day for three months] changed me so much and made me stronger mentally. Hopefully, that will remind others, whatever journey they’re on, of their inner strength.’

How she feels about making big money: ‘I wouldn’t say I had a surplus [amount] of money until about two years ago. So, it’s still a fresh experience for me and, because I never had it, I always felt scared of it. I grew up getting [my clothes] at the thrift store. When I was finally in a position to go out and buy a T-shirt, I was like, “How is it $100? I could buy 50 of them at the thrift store.”’

What she spends her money on: ‘The extra money I have is like energy, it’s a currency I can use. I’ve realised I’ll go broke for the people I love, and I love a lot of people. I’m happy to pitch in and help others fulfil their dreams, get on their feet, whatever it is. I donate to GoFundMe. I don’t need that much stuff, I’ve had this jean jacket I’m wearing for three years. I’m good, I don’t need another jean jacket.’

Well there we go, she used her star power to request (apparently now it’s even on her rider) to be interviewed by women and/or minorities after a study she promoted confirmed there was a massive bias. Completely non controversial and in line with the rest of her advocacy.

Good on her.
