Good Luck Have Fun,

Any of you guys heard of this?

It's basically a site where you simply pledge to play games like a decent person.

The pledge is a promise to

1. Be a good sport whether I win or lose
2. Know that people online are real people and my words have real impact
3. Set a positive example with my behavior
4. Speak up against discrimination, hate speech, harassment, and abuse
5. Show integrity by honoring the rules, my opponents, and my teammates
6. Stop, listen, and reassess if I’m told that my words or actions are harmful
7. Respect others, even if their sincere opinions are different from my own

I like the idea and sign up. I hate playing online and people acting like dicks and while I don't know if this will have any effect it seems to be a nice step in the right direction and it's nice to see people actually taking part as the gaming space is pretty strawberry floating toxic.

The link is my referral link. Wanted to add that so you don't think I'm being a scab. Have a look, even if you don't sign it.

Anyone likely to sign up to this isn’t part of the problem in the first place.

Some of those rules are hard to comply with since players have a different attitudes.

Not being a dick to other people isn't hard to comply with.

I like the noble intention behind it but it’s as vain as wishing for world peace, you know it’s not going to happen so why should you give up robbin’ just to feel less guilty?

Lines like this:

"After you take the GLHF pledge you'll receive a unique referral link you can share with your community. Each person you recruit to sign the pledge adds a point to your score." and that you can get a little twitch icon sounds to my cynical mind a bit like a "who is the most woke" competition, but the sentiment behind it is good I guess.

I remember back in the day you would always type a quick 'gg' at the end of a match, no matter how bad you or your team did. You could spend all evening playing with the same bunch of randoms and be friendly and courteous.

Online gaming was way more wholesome on PC in the late 90s early 2000s.

Smaller communities meant it was easier to single out and deal with bad behavior.

Manners would be nice especially when some games have never exactly been well suited to online play. It doesn’t help that certain games feel rude when there’s nothing inherently rude about them (leaving after 1 match in fighting games is considered bad manners). It would be nice if we could have a cultural shift on this stuff.

Playing Kingpin in 98 on the Wireplay servers was the pinnacle of online gaming for me. Everyone (pretty much) was friendly and helpful, you never worried about coming last in a game, and everyone playing the game seemed to frequent the Wireplay forums of the time. This meant it really did feel like a community, with everyone checking out each others websites and hanging out on ICQ.

Nothing else ever came close to me. I was spending about £50 a month on dial up fees, but I never felt frustrated or antagonised, just part of a new exciting thing with like-minded people.

I don't ever play online games, do I still have to take the pledge?

Edit: and yes, late 90s online community was a much friendlier place, I remember playing hours of Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike and Team Fortress and it was ALWAYS grief-free with no abuse getting thrown at all. Better times

The last online games I've been into have been Mario Maker 2 ("Nice!" "Cool idea!") and Fallout 76 (*waves* *waves back* *drops some loot*) so my recent experience is of pretty good communities

It's not just about playing online, I think it's generally online gaming spaces.

By signing this pledge, you vow to help make your online gaming spaces more inclusive for everyone. You have agreed to play by these seven promises and to hold other pledge-takers to the same standard. That means you will stand up, speak out, and report when you see harassment and discrimination happening in your communities.

in the same section, it also has this regarding Twitch which I know won't affect many here, but still:

If you see someone sporting the badge causing trouble in a stream, please file a report so that our moderation team can review the situation. To ensure that AnyKey represents a universal symbol of respect and inclusion, we will permanently revoke the badge from anyone who is seen to be abusing it.

It also says what exactly they mean by harassment.

Discrimination, hate speech, offensive behavior, or verbal abuse related to sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability, physical appearance, body size, age, or religion
Stalking or intimidation either physically or online
Spamming, raiding, hijacking, or inciting disruption of streams or social media
Posting or threatening to post other people’s personally identifying information (“doxing”)
Unwelcome sexual attention including sexualized comments, jokes, and sexual advances
Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior

Discrimination also includes:

Sharing hurtful or mean-spirited memes
Making casually bigoted comments or jokes (e.g. “that’s so gay”, “you play like a girl”, etc.)
Trash-talking in a way that focuses on someone’s personal traits instead of on their gaming skill

As I said I don't know if it'll actually change anything about online gaming. I simply like the idea behind it.
