I can't sign up to this

I never create trouble (not any more anyway may have sent one or two messages I'm not proud of when I was much younger) but if someone triggers me I can't help but bite back.

Classic example I was playing Gears 5 on Saturday night and some 12 year old american joined and starts singing I don't care by Sheeran (banana split) and Bieber (bigger banana split) into the group chat non stop for 4-5 minutes (which I took patiently) and when that didn't wind anyone up started calling the rest of us "trash" for not saving him while downed (he finished the game on 0 eliminations impressively) and that was it, "SHUT UP KID YOU ARE gooseberry fool"

I mean unprovoked messaging people for not being adequately skilled is something I have never done though (even as a child) how is one meant to get better at a game if they don't play it.

Great thread, totally on board with this. The amount of toxicity online, particularly in Smash, is just ridiculous. Having said this tho, I disagree with "GLHF" as a saying to your opponent. Why would I wish my opponent good luck? Aside from the fact that it trivialises one's skill. In most games, I don't believe luck is even a factor, or at the very least it shouldn't be. So many people say glhf to me before a match in tournament. I just say hf.

Luck is only a big factor in casual party games

Which is why smash players say "good luck" all the time

Perhaps because it's just a nice sporting gesture and generally polite and courteous thing to do, maybe that?

Nothing else ever came close to me. I was spending about £50 a month on dial up fees, but I never felt frustrated or antagonised, just part of a new exciting thing with like-minded people.

Wireplay was great.

I suspect PC gamers still have a significantly higher quality of life when it comes to having to put up with utter mouth breathers to be honest.

I disagree, it seems disrespectful to the opponent to wish them luck, as if they are unable to win through their own skill and require good luck. Why would I pretend luck exists in a game which does not contain luck, and why would I disrespect my opponent in this way?

I'm not so sure, randoms using mics are more prevalent on PC I believe, and text chat is used much more because it's so much easier. Consoles had a rough patch in the previous gen, but now everyone uses party chat to talk to the friends they're playing with and very few people use voice chat otherwise, while text chat is pretty much nonexistent because who has time to write something out with a controller and on-screen keyboard? Communication on console is dominated by in-game emotes and canned lines.

People say to others good luck for many things, it's a common term of respect. You can say it isn't but it is.

The best games have found that sweet spot in terms of balance between how much your success is dictated by skill and luck. Luck is absolutely a key factor in almost all games - unless absolutely every variable is either under a players control or able to be determined by them 100% of the time then that game will always have an element of luck.

As far as I can see Smash Bros certainly does have a luck aspect to it as well. RNG is used to determine certain behaviours/outcomes during play and as that is something which is out of the players control then you can't really call it anything other than luck. :D

The only thing luck affects in competitive Smash is individual moves like Game & Watch's judge, Luigi's misfire, Peach's turnips, etc. In those circumstances I can justify both parties saying good luck.

I feel that luck plays only a tiny role in comparison to skill. In the days of GRcade's regular Mario Kart 8 and Rocket League sessions, guys such as Matt (TWA) and Stacy1199 would nearly always win on the Kart Track, whilst Jazzem and Jiggles regularly scored multiple goals per game in Rocket. Great players find ways of manipulating aspects of a game to their advantage.

I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong as it's easy to take things the wrong way when reading but this thread seems to have drawn a fair ammount of negativity and cinicism which honestly, I'm kind of disappointed to see.

Personally I'm behind the idea and signed up. End of the day there is a huge ammount of toxicity in gaming and these guys (on face value) are trying to support good gamesmanship. I see no harm in that and happy to promote the idea.
