I am pretty surprised at just how weak the game range is for Stadia. I'd kinda thought that the format would be easy to transfer games to; as a server-based PC setup I'd assumed that the big publishers would have their biggest games available on it pretty quickly.

I'm guessing that either publishers don't think that moving their games onto the system is worth it due to the seemingly low number of people using it; or that Google is charging publishers too much to have their games on the format.

It's a linux back end so not as easy for developers to port games to as you might think.

Linux has come a long way in terms of gaming in the last few years, that's undeniable, but there is still a hell of a long way to go before it is anything like as supported as Windows as a gaming platform. Feels like a bad choice of back end from Google.

I guess that the Linux coding requirements are proving to be off-putting for publishers. I wonder if the games currently available on Stadia already had Linux versions and so less work was needed to port them over?

Did a quick bit of digging and the general perception seems to indicate that the answer is probably no. Stadia games won't result in an increase in games available for the Linux format; mainly because the games are gonna be tuned to the Stadia hardware setup. So... this kinda implies that Stadia games will be fresh, separate developments and thus a large-ish potential audience could be required before publishers assign too many resources to this. It seems that Stadia will have a real battle gaining a foothold unless Google splashes support, in terms of time and money, to publishers.

I feel like they'd be better off not announcing these...

PS1 in its DYING DAYS of 2003 had more impressive game announcements than that.

I love Ford Truck Mania and 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure as much as anyone but I think this statement may be pushing it a little. ;)

Looks like an offering for a new Nokia phone. I don't get it.

What are you talking about, that's QUALITY gaming.

Maybe I was thinking of 2002 with Tony Hawk's 4, the Final Fantasy Anthology, FIFA, WRC Arcade and F1 Arcade. Though 2003 was supposed to have Black and White that never turned up.

Why aren't so many games on Google Stadia?

We spoke with game developers and publishers who said there are two main reasons their games aren't on Stadia: Google didn't offer them enough money, and they don't trust the mercurial company to stick with gaming in the long term.

"We were approached by the Stadia team," one prominent indie developer told me. "Usually with that kind of thing, they lead with some kind of offer that would give you an incentive to go with them." But the incentive "was kind of non-existent," they said. "That's the short of it."

It's a statement we heard echoed by several prominent indie developers and two publishing executives we spoke with for this piece.

"It's that there isn't enough money there," one of the publishing executives we spoke with said. The offer was apparently "so low that it wasn't even part of the conversation."

The "incentive" isn't solely financial, but it's the main part of the equation.
"When we're looking at these types of deals," another prominent indie developer said, "We're looking at 'Is this enough money where we have the resources to make what we want, or is this an exclusivity deal that gives us security?'" they said.

Each of the people we spoke with, who asked to be granted anonymity due to ongoing employment in the video game industry, echoed this sentiment — and said Google simply wasn't offering enough money, in addition to several other concerns.

"There are platforms you want to be on because they have an audience and you want to reach that audience," one developer said. "That's what Steam is, or that's what [Nintendo] Switch is. They have big groups on their platforms, and you want to be with those groups so they can play your games."

But Stadia doesn't have a large audience to reach — at least not yet — so Google must create that incentive for developers. And the people we spoke with said, outside of money, there wasn't much reason to put their games on Stadia.

"If you could see yourself getting into a long term relationship with Google?" one developer said. "But with Google's history, I don't even know if they're working on Stadia in a year. That wouldn't be something crazy that Google does. It's within their track record."

This concern — that Google might just give up on Stadia at some point and kill the service, as it has done with so many other services over the years — was repeatedly brought up, unprompted, by every person we spoke with for this piece.

How do they expect a tiny company like Google to have enough money to make indie games?
They can barely scrape enough profit to start paying tax the poor dears  .

Feel Google have entered the market with a strong air of arrogance and really don’t understand how to place their product with developers and get them on board.

It's weird though, because Phil Harrison is no stranger to launching hardware platforms.

This should have been treated exactly like that, with a push for high-profile developers to provide exclusive, or at the very least timed exclusives for the system in it's first year.

As it is, if Google aren't willing to open the wallet, then it's going to fade into nothing. You can't enter the games market and expect to compete against the big players without spending a huge amount of money.

It's not beyond repair, but they need to take some drastic action soon.

Indeed-and it's a market with customers very loyal to those big players.

Best Google can hope for is that they market this to clueless grandparents buying for their relatives - "oh I've heard of the Google, Timmy will love this Stadium thing as I believe it can play the games and does all of the Google stuff"

It's amazing that Google didn't notice Microsoft spending big money to buy developers to try and ensure a decent supply of first party games and think maybe that getting into the market would be quite expensive.
