Maybe the idea is for this to be so completely gooseberry fool as to make all the next gen consoles look even better than normal by comparison?

If that was the plan they nailed it.

It works.

I received my invite code late yesterday and got Google Stadia set up today. I have 50Mb Virgin internet, played in 4K mode. Two free games included. Samurai Showdown, fighting game, fast reactions needed. I could detect latency but so minimal more casual gamers and most people not looking, definitely wouldn't. Destiny 2, and when I started moving I felt it was not quite as responsive as a locally played FPS, but it worked absolutely fine. I noticed no artifacts in either game, and watching my off-screen recorded footage I didn't see any. For me, it was absolutely playable.

Features, there are no features. The app is currently the console UI. You use it to browse games to buy, add friends, and change PQ settings. You use the Capture button to take a screenshot or 30 second clip in the app but these are not viewable yet. Also, I wanted to stream my gameplay but YouTube's Stadia console doesn't even allow you to stream!

If you have decent internet then the technology works - I think Google's mistake was to release it before all the software features were ready.

EDIT: Sitting at my desktop computer just now. I opened Chrome and just like I would type GRcade.co.uk I typed Stadia.com - I launched the UI selected Destiny and was able to jump in immediately (besides the loading time) and continue with my character and play using my Bluetooth mouse. There was a couple of moments of slowdown and artifacts, which is weird as my monitor is 1080p. To access a library of games like this will be utterly captivating.

Glad you got it going in the end Venom, hopefully it wipes the foul taste from your mouth of the previous few days (context thread). You mention the small delay - its this which would kill it for me. I use steam link in my home (pc upstairs, play on tv in living room) and even the small lag on there reminded me I wasn't really playing it 'properly'. In the end I bought some expensive powerline adapters to wire it together, and only then could I have a lag free experience and forget it was streaming.

Sounds like cool technology, and it'll be great once the proper infrastructure is in place.

Even over powerline or direct ethernet networking I still find Steam in-home streaming to be too laggy for my liking, not necessarily a full-on deal breaker but bad enough that I wouldn't choose it over playing directly if I had the choice.

Eh, kind of - the joke doesn't really work though unless the character movement/logic is handled locally and the window is the only thing being handled by the cloud.

A real Stadia scenario would be that there are several seconds before anything happens, but I accept a "technically accurate" joke is a harder one to pull off in this instance. ;)

Yeah, if the service actually worked well and reliably across a broad range of scenarios then the convenience factor of being able to pick up your game across any device would be the closest thing this has to a "killer feature".

Google statement on performance issues:

"Stadia streams at 4K and 60 FPS - and that includes all aspects of our graphics pipeline from game to screen: GPU, encoder and Chromecast Ultra all outputting at 4k to 4k TVs, with the appropriate internet connection. Developers making Stadia games work hard to deliver the best streaming experience for every game. Like you see on all platforms, this includes a variety of techniques to achieve the best overall quality. We give developers the freedom of how to achieve the best image quality and framerate on Stadia and we are impressed with what they have been able to achieve for day one.

"We expect that many developers can, and in most cases will, continue to improve their games on Stadia. And because Stadia lives in our data centers, developers are able to innovate quickly while delivering even better experiences directly to you without the need for game patches or downloads."

There's also been reports of Stadia overheating Chromecast Ultra units.

This is comfortably one of the worst launches in videogames ever.

Now the LOL STADIA MORE LIKE LAGDIA AMIRITE crap has died down, what do you think of the console/service? Are you playing it as much as you thought you would? We've been playing in home streaming from my pc to tv downstairs and it's absolutely flawless, perfect picture and no lag (wired steam link). I was thinking if streaming only could reach this point in the future, I'd happily use it.

Didn't want to bump the thread just to laugh at Stadia when I saw it before, but since it's here now:

That Stadia lag is real bad, huh?

Yeah, I don't think Microsoft are going to start worrying that Gamepass is staring to become obsolete.
